Our Relay For Life event is coming up in June. Does anyone have any good fundraising ideas? Anything from handmade items, to chili cookoffs. Anything different???? I know you all have some great ideas. Thanks in advance!!!

I'm the captain of our RFL team here too. We are a HS. Last year we raised a lot of money for our team by having luncheons once a week. All the teachers donated food (well, not all...you know) then paid 3-5$ to eat lunch too!! It was a big hit. We're going to do a quick one in the next couple weeks to raise our "team entrance fee". We did a different "theme" each week. Our RFL weekend is in Oct.

Have you checked the RFL website? They have a lot of ideas too.

We are also going to rent a Farmer's Market space this summer. Probably just once a month. Our lot is fairly crafty. Folks donate their wares and then we sell them w/proceeds going to the RFL. Everything from jewelry and purses to laser crafts and hand carved pumpkins!

I think one of the best fundraisers at the event was...well...I don't know what to call it...but for 2.00 you could get a length of plastic lacing and every time you did a lap around the track (1/4 mile) you got a pony bead...then for your 4th lap (1 mile) you grabbed a white pony bead. I tell you...passing/collecting those pony beads at 3am on a COLD October morning is what I was going for last fall!!!!! (The cost may have been 3$ I can't remember...) We also had folks with dinner items for 3-4$...chilli, hot dogs, soup, and what not.

I am going to try to create a "pin" for this year's event. I don't have any idea what it will look like. Our theme is Cruisin for A Cure...but I don't know if that's cars or boats.... I'm thinking cars (MI and all) but you never know. Our kick-off is in a couple weeks.

Our "fundraisers" happen mostly in the fall through the month of September....because we are a school team. I'm hoping with a couple months before the end of the school year now, we can raise a bit more. I'm also hoping we'll have more students involved this year too. We had a lot of school groups donate their time though. Our football players were instrumental in set-up and tear-down. They were there to do whatever anyone needed help with. Also, the cheerleaders and our SADD group set up all the luminaries and helped with the survivor dinner. We did a fair amount of luminary sales too...but that was every team of course.

Looking forward to hearing about your event! T

What a bummer! Before long there will be regulations for our breathing!

Good luck with your relay!

Debbie, When we called they said anything you pay money taking a chance to win something is not a legitamit contest. They said we couldn't even do door prizes. If you can win according to speed, endurance, beauty, strength, then that was considered a contest. Sounds crazy to me. I can do it if I get a license, but that cost too much.

How can a simple Chinese Auction be banned in Indiana?

Here's how our's usually work....you gather up lots of cute things, ANYTHING...number them, arrange them all on tables and place a cup or small box next to them with the corresponding number on them so people don't confuse what cup goes with what prize. Then people buy tickets, usually 5 for $1.00 or up to $1.00 each if you have WONDERFUL items. Then the people put as many tickets in a cup as they want to try to win that item. The people in charge, take the cups and randomly draw the winning ticket and that person gets that item....it's simple enough and very entertaining at times! Hope you are allowed to do this. It is very fun way to make money!

Thanks Lynn! I will consider that. We were thinking of a beautiful baby contest too. So far we're having a roadblock, a carwash, and thats all thats set. We will have campsite fundraising events too, that will help, a dunking booth which was great last year. A jumping thing, those BIG blow up ones. A few games for the smaller kids to play. And we're working on having Buddy Jewell come for a concert, I met him right before he won Nashville Star. He's a great guy. But was a little late getting sponsors for the event so we may have to do it next year. But we are probably gonna have Dawn Smith Jordan come for a concert and speaking and have a chili cook off afterwards. But thats not set in stone either. So I'm not counting on those last two events yet. We live in a VERY small town and it's hard to get things done sometimes. But we're trying. This is only my second year in Relay and my first year as Team Captain. So I'm hoping we raise a little more than we did last year. That would be great!

What about a flea market? Vendors pay for their space; you just advertise the event and keep track of the vendors. I've done lots of flea markets over the years; it is always a big hit around here.

That sounds really neat Alee Thanks!!! The Chinese Auction sounds cool too but we have new gaming laws in Indiana that prohibits most things like this. We had a Relay For Life throw we were going to raffle off and coudn't do it. They said NO drawings either. So that would cancel out a chinese auction I think

The Jaycee's here just did a fun event. They did Texas Holdem and Bingo Night Social. Entry was $10 if pre-registered and $15 at the door. You got $100,000 play money to start the night and they played the games for a couple hours and then finished the evening with a Silent Auction using the play money. They had things donated such as quilts, BBQ's, Gift Certificates, fun poker themed glasses and such. It was lots of fun for those attending and went from 7-11pm.
