Can I have a link to this story? I haven't heard about this at all in the news lately and want some direct links. I am a writer for a newspaper and feel a story (at least in the paper I write for) is a must.

Go under Senate and/or House of Respresentatives and you will find your people and can email them from that site, that is where I found mine.

I also wanted to let you know that there is a LOT of effort being made to gain support so this bill will pass. According to the bill backers everyone is "over reacting" and that the bill does not address organic or small farms. Guess what - THEY ARE RIGHT. The language of the bill is SOOOOO broad that it includes every type of farm. It doesn't exempt small farms, organic farms, backyard gardeners, ect..That is what is so scary here. This thing is WAY too broad and has the potential of being a big nightmare.

I went on the web and found a listing of Farmers Markets in TN and have emailed all of the managers in hopes of getting there support on stopping this...

CONTACT YOUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE HERE
http://capwiz.com/grassrootsnetroots/issues/alert/?alertid=12878056

You simply type in your zip and there is a pre written form letter you can use and it sends it directly to your rep. Best thing is you can edit it if you want!

Here's my follow-up letter to the original post about this subject:

Dear Senator Isakson,
I am enclosing a link (http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=30541&whichpage=1)to a message board as a follow-up to my e-mail to you concerning H.R. 875, as well as other similar bills. I thought you should be aware of how this bill is being received in the general public. It is not favorable.
I respectfully ask you to consider all repercussions of the passing of this bill and vote NO when it comes before you.
If we allow large GMO corporations to set the standard for food safety then small farmers will be put out of business.
I for one prefer my food in its natural, pure, anadulterated, non-genetically modified state, which is much safer for the health of me and my family and people world wide.
It is not the local farmer that is creating an unsafe food supply, it is these large, greedy corporations who are looking to corner the market on the world's food supply that is to blame.
Do you eat RoundUp Resistant soy beans? I bet you do. How has that soy bean been altered in order to not succumb to a spraying of RoundUp? And why is it being sprayed with RoundUp?
Plants will accomodate and adapt themselves to their surroundings without help from us. It is how Nature works. They will build defenses that will not only make them resistant to disease and infestation, but develop stronger, more nutritional properties that will, in turn, benefit us.
Please encourage your colleagues to resist the efforts of those seeking to grow food for dollars and instead throw your support for those who desire to grow food for health.
Thank you for you time.

Sincerely,
Karin K. Smith

Somewhere, some time, WE THE PEOPLE have to step up and take charge. This admistration is trying to take away our rights one at a time. All this stuff about clean food, is just a way of taking away our rights to grow our own food. It is time we get out there and do something about this, not just sitting here typeing on our computers.

I was just watching the Documentry Channel last night and saw where even in India Monsanto has been giving the farmers these seeds. They are REALLY MAD and protesting against them. Also a farmer in Canada has lost most of his crop because of the contamination from the farm that is 20 miles away that is growing GM crops. He has been in legitation for 2 yrs with Monsanto...I think that is why we are loosing our bee population. What are the small farmers that want to grow good food and safe food for themselves and to make a little money with the extra that we grow... When are we going to ge this to stop. I could go on forever..But I am just one who thinks this was. And I see in the forum there are many who think this way.

The funny thing about this is that the recent food safety issues are from large companies, not the small family farms that will be hurt by these bills. It's so sad that anyone could even use that excuse for this as if it will really change what the big businesses do.

Thanks for the alert. I live in Bozeman, MT, which has several CSA farms as well as several organic farms that supply local restaurants, a fantastic Community Food Co-op that is committed to supporting local organic agriculture and two wonderful farmers' markets that host local organic produce. We also have a wheat farm that while not certified organic is committed to the least chemical intervention possible from which I buy my wheat in bulk. I sent e-mails to my two Senators, Max Baucus, D-MT, and Jon Tester, D-MT, and Representative Dennis Rehberg, R-Montana. Senator Tester, who has an organic farm on the high line (near the Canadian border area) of Montana has been the only one so far to reply.

Dear Linda:

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about food safety legislation currently before Congress.
I believe in strong food safety protections. Recent failures such as meat recalls and salmonella contamination in peanut products call attention to the pressing need for improved oversight of food processing plants.
However, some of the record-keeping and product-tracking provisions proposed in recent legislation would create undue burdens on Montana family farmers and ranchers without improving food safety. What works for a large corporate farm somewhere else may not make sense for a small organic producer in Montana.
I will continue to work hard with my Senate colleagues to make sure consumers are protected by strong food safety standards, from production to processing to consumption. As food safety legislation comes before the Senate, be assured that I will keep your views in mind. Please do not hesitate to contact me again if I can be of further assistance.
Sincerely,
Jon Tester
United States Senator

Linda

Debbie - That was just what I told someone at work! Tomatoes will become the new blackmarket product... What is so scary is that this can so easily happen. It is not just vegetables this goes into any meats, dairy, ect..

We all need to contact our local farmers markets and let the market manager's know about this - email and send links. It may help get more support for the movement to stop this now. All of this in a nice little package to make it look like Big Brother is protecting us. It would be nice if they spent as much effort checking into the food being imported into the U.S.

Underground food buying...meeting in dark corners of deserted alleys to get a bag of organic tomatoes. This is soooooooooo ridiculous...it makes me want to cry!!!

PLEASE PLEASE take time to call your state reps and tell them NO on the Food Safety Modernization Act. Did you know that Rosa DeLaura D-Conn - introduced this bill. HER HUSBAND conducts research for Monsanto the worlds largest producer of herbicides and genetically produced seeds..... check out this link http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=92002for more info. It is a great article

This is so sad. Think what it will mean for Farmer's Markets. Please get the word out to everyone you know so that this does not happen.

This is so scary and they do try to confuse you with the language they use. It's really ridiculous~they hope to keep people from getting involved and stopping them.

This may make me sound silly...but could someone put some of that bill into plain english. I read a lot of books so I'm not stupid by any means but I just can't get past all of the "legal" mumbo jumbo sometimes...lol

AND after you let YOUR elected officials know where you stand on this, I'd suggest going out and buying some heirloom seeds and start a seed saving group in your communities!

This is SCARY!
