I was at our local junk shop a while back and noticed the top shelf of a cabinet was loaded down with about ten or twelve blue ball canning jars. Since I love them, and have an idea on how I want to use them, I asked the lady how much for the lot. They were priced at $5 a piece, and since I bought them all, she sold them to me for $1.50 ea. I thought it was a pretty good deal, and when we were wrapping them up I noticed one of the jars was actually green. When I commented on the 'green canning jar', she said, "Oh, no, honey. These are actually Moonshine Jars. If you'll notice, they're quart jar size, but actually hold more than a quart. And also, the shoulders are round, not square like typical canning jars." I just smiled and acted interested, but from my understanding, moonshiners would use just about any kind of jar they could find. Since then, I've had three other people tell me that the story is likely true, and one of my older neighbors said I could probably find more jars along the creek on my property, as there used to be a still there! I haven't gone to look yet, but right now, I'm just curious if anyone else has heard this story! As far as I'm concerned, the jury's still out, but if nothing else, at least it's fun!

My family made 'shine between Prohibition and the 1950s. And when they could not find clear vinegar jars (the kind with the ring shaped handle on the neck) to bottle, they would use the green colored mason jars. I found tons of them wehn I was cleaning out my grandfather's barn a few years ago. Great find for you! I love keeping these around the house filled with little odds and ends; they make neat conversation pieces and even better storage containers!

I grew up part the later part of my schooling years in KY and I've had moonshine. I agree, YUCK and way STRONG. I've heard that the moonshiners used to break the jars with the #13 on them as they thought they were bad luck. I don't know this for fact, but that's what I've heard, hence they are harder to find, the old ones that is.
I thank God I'm not a drinking woman any more(not that I did much back in the day).

There MIGHT have been a little Kentucky moonshine at Miss Wilma's Knob Lick Country Club last October, but I'm not telling! LOL!

Our family married into the well known pritts moonshiners so we have the recipe. The one fam reunion there was moonshine, holy balls that stuff is strong! We had tiny salad dressing cups of it and I downed mine. Talk about warming. That was the last time I had it. I've been around it since then but NO THANK YOU! We still have a canning jar of it in the basement. It is clear as water....if someone didn't know it was moonshine they'd be in trouble. Now I've had Meade before and love that fermented honey hmmmm.

Oh yeah, it's still made in VA and it's still illegal...unless you get a permit from the Commonwealth of VA and then I think it's less than 100 gallons a year. That seems a lot so I'm probably mis-remembering.

OK...My Granny keeps a jar of moonshine under her sink (for medicinal purposes only of course) and it was a regular Mason jar...clear. |

I know all about those jars. Lol
I have even tasted Moonshine.
Believe me,
It ain't what it is cracked up to be !!
Yuck.
I am glad I am not a "drinking Gal"
I do like wine now and then
just a sip mind you
I am a "tea drinker" Ha
I remember one time when my cousin and I were at my grandmother's
we were there with some of our uncles
one of our uncle's decided he needed a re-fill on his Moon shine
well.
Cousin and I only learned how to drive and got our driver's linces
He made us go to this woman's house
We took my Aunt's car.
The Moon shine lady lived in this place up in the "howoller"
way back in the woods.
it was in the mid of night.
My uncle went to the house and left us in the car all alone
we were so scared
When we got back to my grandmother's house; you should have heard all the fussing
My mom and aunt didn't realize we were gone until much later in the night.
You never heard so much fussin in all your life.
They really let my uncle have it.
Needless to say.
He never asked us to take him after his "Moon shine" anymore Lol.

Well I'll be.....you learn something every day! That is fascinating! Thank you gals for all that history and that Mason Jar article was very interesting too! I think there are peple who still make it down here too but I haven't come across any but then I am not "local" to here or else I'm sure I would know who they were.

I have known and do know moonshiners and, trust me, they use what's available! -smile-
The article was enjoyable reading but if you want to know what's /not/ in your hooch...put a bit in a bowl and light a match to it. If it burns a blue flame, it's pure hooch; anything less than a blue flame and you might end up blind.
