Posted - Mar 07 2009 : 07:51:48 AM GARBAGE! Yes, you heard me. I will not be hauling that bag out to the hiway any more. I have a long driveway so this is even better. What will I do? I already recycle more than two thirds of my garbage so doing away with the rest should be easy. I put in a compost bin ( metal garbage can half buried in the ground )(check out Rene's compost post, sorry about the pun) last fall, so I can have lovely composted dirt for my new flower beds. I took a good look at my garbage and discovered that there were many more items I could recycle. Little bits of paper, envelopes, etc. some I shred some and some goes straight into recycle. Some items can go to the Goodwill. I think what I will end up with is plastic bags, some that can be used again. I am pretty excited because I will save almost $150 a year!

Posted - Mar 07 2009 : 11:26:44 AM Recycling will not take the bags, however, some are recyclable (is that a word?) just not the ones I have. Other than that they will take almost everything.

Posted - Mar 07 2009 : 09:07:58 AM Karen, ditto, we just changed our trash pick up from the large can to the small one which saves us about $60 a year. I drive past the Community Recycle bins on my way to work so once a week I just pull in & drop off plastic/glass/aluminum/cardboard & paper/newspapers...I have to laugh now we hardly fill up this smaller trash can....but I still drag it up the almost 300ft driveway...lol! I will be composting again once the weather permits. I have a 8x15" ft area for all my composting next to where I grow my 'taters. I save my palstic bags for re-use but I too keep lots of 'green bags' in my car...my newest one is from JoAnns Fabric, Paid $1 for it & it is good sized. Well off to putter in the house,,,have a great Saturday.

Posted - Mar 07 2009 : 08:06:36 AM I mean packaging. I reuse any store plastic bags (which are very few)and use my homemade totes as much as possible. If I forget them I usually hand carry my items, not groceries, of course. I make an effort to use my tote everywhere not just in grocery stores.

Posted - Mar 07 2009 : 07:56:13 AM Karen- are you talking about the plastic bags that you take your groceries out in or the plastic bags that like tortillas come in?
By the way I think you are my hero! That is so awesome! Keep up the great work!
