Hello ladies!

So, I have two weddings coming up. I really want to give the couples a handmade gift but I am not quite sure what to do. I can knit basic stitches/stitch patterns, crochet very basic stitches, and am learning to sew, just to give you an idea of what my skills are.

The first couple is getting married in August 2009 so I have a bit of time to work on theirs. It is my very best friend and I am a bridesmaid. I want the gift to be something special. Any ideas?

The second wedding is actually much sooner than the first (this May) but we just found out about it last week. It is my boyfriend's dad and his 20 year old girlfriend. We are all very surprised and pretty wierded out by the whole thing (my bf will have a step mom who is the same age as him...) but I think I still might want to make them a special something... oh and by the way, she is pregnant with his baby on top of everything. Any ideas for this couple??

Thanks so much for your thoughts and ideas! I really appreciate it. :)

How about embroidered bed sheets. Like pillowcases and top edge of the flat sheet? You could monogram or do a borderlike pattern. Everyone needs bedsheets..hehe
Well,at least I do..lol

When my Sister-in-law and her husband got married, we gave our gift after the wedding.

We took Black & White photos from the wedding and reception. Chose a great photo of the Bride and Groom dancing, had the photo studio make the photo look ethereal with a vignette and framed it in a really nice frame. They loved it!

Of course nowadays, you could probably just use photo shop :)

Even if you know basic stiches for knitting or crochet you can still put something nice together. For crochet granny squares are pretty simple and very quick to do. If you know their house colours that might be an idea, but if you don't classic ivory (natural wool colour) is always a good one.

I was at a wedding a few years ago where my friend was given a large basket just of everyday things that a new house needs, sheets, towels, even laundry detergent. Really the sky is the limit.

Have fun.

Thank you so much for your ideas! They are really great! I think I might go with the basket for the wedding in May (It is sooner and quicker to do). And I think I might be adventurous and knit/crochet a blanket for my best friend's wedding. It's personal and takes a lot of time and energy to complete. Thanks again for the input!

Farmgirl cheer!

One of my most favorite gifts from my wedding was a picnic basket from my godmother. Inside she put all kind of things necessary for a fancy picnic: cloth napkins, napkin rings, placemats, votive candle holders, small knife/cutting board set, two wine glasses, etc. All the fabric and napkin ring colors were coordinated with my wedding colors. And to top it all off, she had woven the basket herself! Now, I don't know if you are any good at basket-weaving, but you can very easily make them a set of cloth napkins and placemats, maybe with their monogram or something else embroidered on them. You can also easily embellish or make some dish towels and potholders for her kitchen. http://www.sewmamasew.com/blog2/ had alot of great ideas last month on using fat quarters for these projects, and they have a whole section on sewing for the home. Lots of great tutorials and links. Good luck!

Or you could do a simple embroidery wedding announcement that they could hang on the wall. You know that has their names and wedding date. You can embellish it with a little heart of flowers or ...? Or the knitted or crocheted afghan would be nice.

I crocheted a blanket for my best friend for her wedding. They still have it and they say they love it :D !

Here's some ideas, not so much homemade, but still put together by you.

A Honeymoon basket:
Purchase a nice big basket and into it add stuff like...bubble bath, champagne and two glasses, snack foods or chocolates, roses or rose petals (or wichever flower they used in their wedding), A nice frame for their wedding picture, a small 'honeymoon album', a book or booklet on 'bedroom games', small notepad (romantic looking) and pen for 'love notes', candles, etc. You get the idea.

You can use the basekt idea for 'other' things too..not just a honeymoon one..but 'married life' (think comical), or find out what colors they are using in their house and go that route.

Other things:
Nice picture frame for wedding photo
Painted picture for their walls
Wine glass set
my brain has just run empty! (not enough coffee yet! refill time)

Ohh wait..(refills..they work!)
As far as handmade items..
couch pillows (in their house colors)
Towel sets in their color that you sew nice 'lace' to the edge.
Dinner napkins that you make (and maybe placemats too)(don't forget napkin rings)
Sheet set that you personalize..sew lace on the pillow cases and sheet edge, or embroider their initials.

Ok..now my brain is empty.
