Just wondering if any of y'all out there wear only skirts and dresses and if so do you have any advice for someone who's about to "make the switch"? I am diabetic and have an insulin pump, skirts and dresses make this more comfortable (it's like a constant IV that is hooked either in my tummy or backside, depending on the day). I am also trying to become a better example of modesty for my two young girls and thinking I'll probably switch them to all dresses/skirts/jumpers too. Just wondering if anyone has any good sources to find these things in modest styling, and help for keeping warm in the winter while wearing them, do you wear thick tights, petticoats, etc.

Any help/advice/thoughts on the subject will be much appreciated :)

Thanks for all the hints ladies, and the sites to check out, will do once the kids give me more than five minutes on the computer! I had never thought of buying tights in the bigger sizes, but it makes sense, especially for me with my hosing and everything for my insulin pump! Thanks again, and keep them coming if anyone else has any more ideas!

And under all those layers were crotchless undies! Those weren't invented recently ya know....I could understand why they made them too. I spent 4 months making a Civil War Ball Gown and when we went to the ball and I had to go potty, I understood why they wore their undies crotchless.

Well take heart Heather. Those pioneer women wore lots of layers under those skirts!

I love to wear the thick knit tights under my skirts, I get a size too big and my legs keep warmer and I am much more comfortable. I wear a skirt or dress in the summer all the time but I am a bit of a baby when it comes to the cold weather skirt wearing. I have one that is warm with a flannel underskirt but all the others are too thin and chilly to wear... milking in a skirt when it is in the single didgets is a drag. I would of made a poor pioneer woman!!LOL

A hint re tights and nylons - and I have to credit my best friend from Las Vegas for this. She saw me looking at the Height/Weight chart on the side of a nylons package at a store and said No! Buy the double queen size! Even if you are pretty thin the big sizes will fit you and be a lot more comfortable. Try a pair and see.

For years I only wore long skirts and dresses. This year I went back to wearing pants especially this winter. We heat with a woodstove and fireplace and there just is not enough warmth with those. I also did not care for the bulkiness of wearing leggings and a skirt around the waist. It could be warm at times but then it was mainly not be able to get out and do anything. Too cumbersome some days.
I do still wear skirts and dresses but not so much in the cold weather.

Minnetonka is a stones throw from where I grew up.

I would be the michelan man too, but wouldn't they be nice and toasty warm?

I'm on my second pair of knee high moccasins. My first pair lasted 15 years..of heavy wear! The second pair I bought lace up the sides and I don't like them as well, cuz when I cross my legs, the metal eyelets hurt my leg. I got them from Minnetonka and they cost about $150.00. Not many people wear them, but when I got out people say they love my moccasins. When you wear them they give you the feeling of being barefoot!

Kate... I could see me in down filled tights....if they were white I'd look like the Michelin Man...what a hoot!

I wear long skirts when I work at our Renaissance Festival. When it is chilly, I wear the cuddle dud longjohns underneath and wool socks- they keep me very warm.
Otherwise, I wear cotton bloomers underneath. I know it isn't what you asked for exactly.
If I wore them more in the winter, I'd probably wear them with those cable knit tights we used to wear when were little along with the long johns over those.
However, that said, the idea of wearing a skirt when it is 20 below, with 45-50 below windchill terrifies my already cold self.
Its too bad Eddie Bauer hasn't figured out how to make down filled tights.

I just take a 45 inch width 100% cotton skirt.
I measure how long I want the skirt and cut it out by another one made.
I add pockets and the elastic.
That is really easy,
You can go to the fabric stores and look in the books for patterns.
They also have easy to sew patterns.
I like those styles too ; good luck and hugs sheila

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'm getting lots of good ideas....does anyone have any suggestions on patterns for skirts and dresses? I love the 30's/40's style of dresses (aka Mrs. Walton) and the prairie style skirts. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I am wearing the one pair of pants I have in my closet! I am a dress and skirt wearer year round. I have to say that I'm a HUGE tights fan..not so much pantyhose but definitely tights and I have quite the assortment. I have several petticoats that I wear too and nice long knee high+ socks. It's weird, when my feet and my shoulders are warm, the rest of me is too! I would recommend thrift stores for some nice and easy skirts and I would recommend making your own, if you are so inclined. Good luck

I wear skirts and dresses pretty much all warm season (bare legs:) and I'm wearing them more in winter, but I still wear my jeans alot too- I'm not a big tights fan either, I found the warmest way for me to wear skirts in winter are with my long johns underneath, then my wooly knee highs overtop. I sometimes wear a flannel petti, or I double up on my skirts. I have a couple white eyelet skirts that I can wear under other skirts I have (sort of like a faux petti).

Debbi- kneehigh mocassins sound wonderful! I'm going to have to look into those for next winter :)

One of my big plans for this year is to overhaul my wardrobe- get rid of almost everything, and get a couple vintage patterns, and sew maybe three dresses each in different fabrics/weights. Then everyday all I have to do is pop on one of my pretty vintage dresses- easy peasy!

I wear long skirts mostly in the summer. I love being able to hide my legs and stay cool at the same time. In the winter I wear jeans because of the cold, I like the leggings idea and knee socks make sense. let me know how you make out. Diane

What Carol? you dont ride side- saddle? Just got a funny image of you on Tootsie..in a dress..& nylons..You would never wear nylons in Arizona..it would be a sure sign that you are not a native Zonie if you do...

Shirley Jean...yes that's what's nice about being in the warmer states. I get to wear dresses and skirts in the winter in Arizona....then again in the summer in Washington State......... unless I'm riding the horses!

My son in law wears an insulin pump and the pump itself rides on his bgelt and looks like a beeper or something. But a pocket on the inside of your skirt would probably be a great thing! I love skirts and here in the south can wear them a lot with only sandals. It becomes more difficult when you have to figure out tights or shoes to go with it. I love the freedom of shirts. I still wear hippy skirts, but I know they are out of style.

I wear long skirts and dresses and jumpers most of the time. I have found the way to get through winter in Maine is to wear leggings, it has made such a difference, too bad it took me so long to find out. "
There are a lot of neat dress pattern sites. If you type modest clothing in google I'm sure you'll get some ideas.

Those who do wear skirts, do you wear, pantyhose? tights? socks? I think I'd wear more skirts and loose dresses but I HATE pantyhose or tights. In the summer bare legs are OK but what about winter?

I have always worn petticoats under my skirts. They feel soooo nice swishing about and I find that I don't have to be nearly so ladylike. If you sew, there are very easy patterns out there and you can modify them to suit yourself. I'm very tall and I like to wear skirts that hit just below my calf. Most off the rack skirts barely hit the bottom of my knee. Maybe you could even sew in a pocket to hold your pump so you don't have to put it on your body? I'm not real informed about pumps and IV's...

Cheryl!!!!!! Your chickens are not going to like the bloomer thing......you'll be competing with the "bloomer" look they seem to have on their own legs!

Thrift stores! skirts are great to wear and an Apron helps keep them from getting soiled during the day. I do not wear one every day but I do wear them more in the summer . I am going to get me some farm "Bloomers too.
