Today my husband told me that he wants to take a vacation, which is wonderful, but we need to take the vacation sometime in the month of March, preferably early to mid March. We live in Indiana, so I would like to go someplace warmer and we have two small children, so we will be making numerous stops, though our children are excellent riders. I think we will go somewhere south, possibly Louisiana or Georgia. Any suggestions for destinations or things along the way? I would like to stop in Chattanooga and go to the aquarium if we go towards GA, but other than that I'm not too sure, so any help y'all have would be great. Any thoughts on Savannah or New Orleans this time of year? Is this the time for Spring Break? We should probably stay away from that! Thanks!!

Thank you so so much for all the ideas!! We just got back from a wonderful vacation!
We drove down to Florida making several stops along the way, including the Montgomery Zoo. I really encourage anyone in that area to go to the zoo. It was great, and just what we needed after a day in the car.

The next day we stopped at Mexico Beach (beautiful!) and played for a few hours before heading to our destination of Apalachicola. OH MY WORD. Apalachicola is just about the cutest place I have ever been. We rented the Raney Guest Cottage and it was perfect. Built around 1835 but completely modern, two bedroom house right downtown. The woman who manages the cottage does the most superb job of making it a home. I highly recommend it if anyone goes down that way. And it really isn't very expensive compared to the other hotels and B&Bs in the area. The town itself is perfect, not too big with lots and lots of cute shops and great restaurants that are all within walking distance of each other. I am not doing it justice in my description, but it really is great. We went to the beaches on Cape San Blas and St. George Island and both were awesome. Next time we will probably just rent a house on St. George Island so we are closer to the beach.

After leaving Apalachicola, we drove to Wakulla Springs State Park and stayed at the Lodge there. Thank you so much to Jeannie for suggesting this place. Extraordinary. We loved the riverboat tour and seeing all the animals. The water was too dark for the glass-bottom boat tour, but I couldn't imagine it being better than what we got to do. I think we were there on just about the perfect day for seeing wildlife! And the Lodge is spectacular. Great restaurant, old fashioned elevator, and no TV! I loved that we didn't have a television in our room. My husband wasn't too happy about that at first, but he finally admitted that he really didn't miss it.

Coming home, we stopped at the aquarium in Chattanooga, TN. It has been probably 15 years since I had been there and it is better than ever. My two year old loved pointing out the fish to anyone who would listen!

I can't wait until we get to take another vacation. It was a bit stressful being in the car for so much time with our two kids, but they did much better than expected. Farmgirl friends are the best travel agents!

Hi Toni, you're welcome. I don't know if that's spring break but if it's not...VA Beach is lovely and very child friendly. What's your interests?
There's a Civil War Trail leading throughout central VA - I think you get a tape in Richmond and listen to it as you follow the Appomattox Trail, Lee's Retreat, etc.
The Shenandoah Valley is beautiful but, I'm thinking, more for adults than children. Could be because I don't have children and don't know where to take them -smile-.
Northern VA and DC - incredible history in DC, child friendly places like the Smithsonian Bug Museum, the Spy Museum and a lot of others. In the Bug Museum children can hold bugs like the Madagasgar Cockroach...UGH!...I've been there with children and done that. "Why?", you may very well ask. Because that's what my friend's children wanted to do! sigh.
I don't know how child friendly Savannah is but I do know it's one of the most beautiful cities I've ever visited.

charleston, SC is pretty....i loved savannah, too. if you go a little further south there's st. augustine. that's a real fun place...it's fun to run around the old fort and walk around "old town." you can go see an aligator farm, or the many historic buildings. i think it's very kid-friendly...everything is close and once you get there, you can mostly walk around...(i found that the kids couldn't wait to get out of the car!) also, the advantage to going to these places is the atlantic ocean, if you're into that. we have relatives in indiana and they always talk about wanting to see and go into the ocean!! have fun!!

Come to Georgia!!!!! I love it here. Savannah is a great place to go ad a matter of fact my husband and I are going some times in April. It is beautiful and romantic. If you want some beach time I would suggest St. Simmons Island just an hours drive from Savannah on 95. You could come through our mountains on the way down. Also if you come to Athens (Go Dawgs) my husband and I would love to meet you for dinner. Georgia is a great place to vacation it has everything. Do I sound like I work for the touisim company? Maybe thats where I can apply for a job!lol.

I live in north Florida.....and have been in this state for over 30 years. Look at Seaside. Look at St. George Island. We love those places. No Spring Breakers there. And many places along the big bend coast are not spring break oriented. Forget Panama City and Destin.

Savannah is great, and if you stay at the Westin across the river, you can take the ferry every 1/2 hour and that is really fun. But not as much to see, in my opinion. Google Wakulla Springs. A treasure. Torreya State Park, another treasure if you like to camp. Callaway Gardens....great place for families. I hope you find what you are looking for!!!!

Sandra~ Thanks for the input! I had actually considered Appalachicola because I read an article in Southern Living about it and it looked wonderful. I just had kinda put Florida out of mind because I didn't want to be around Spring Breakers, though App. didn't look like there kind of place. Do you think Savannah would be a bad idea for small kids? Or do you have anywhere in Virginia you would recommend?

What about Apalachicola, FL? I've never been but want to go; hear it's beautiful, laid back, quiet yet has plenty to do and see, places to stay and eat.
My sister just got back from Savannah and that's such a beautiful city; expensive though. I've only been once and loved it.
