I started back to work today....one day a week. I still have 4 months left of maternity benifits, altogether, i had 9 month paid leave.
Just wondering....how long is it where you live?

here it is around $250/week for daycares. I don't have any family here so I will work when hubby can watch Oliver

Anna, that is actually pretty cheap for daycare, believe it or not. In the Chicago area, normal daycares are around $1200 a month! That was part of the reason I had quit my job!

This is one reason out of a very long list as to why we still don't have kids.
As state employees, we also get 6 weeks plus any accrued vacation time.
I wouod never force my parents to become caregivers. They live an hour away so this is unealistic.
I'm opposed to daycare, although it is a necessity and will be used if we ever do decide on children.
One of the finest daycares around here charges 500/month I think

I'm retired now but where I used to work it was however much sick leave time you had saved up.

I had worked at a government research laboratory and we got 3 months maternity/sick leave. Once my sick leave was over, I did quit my job. My husband and I both felt it was more important that I stayed home with our son. If I could have had a year off, I probably would have then returned to my job. You are very fortunate you have those benefits up there! The U.S. is way behind the western world when it comes to maternity leave.

With my "regular" births, I got six weeks. With my c-section, I got eight.
I was ready to go back to work by the end of all too. I am not one to stay home either.

I highly doubt it, as nice as that would be, right now our country has much bigger problems. But, that would sure be nice. However, we don't even have universal health care, I believe before we could switch to your kind of program, we would have to have the health care, and maybe even the free university like other countries have first, I don't know.
But, certainly at least some basic standards could start being built. But, I doubt anything as nice as yours will ever come here.

Well the USA really doesn't have much laws for such leave. In fact we are behind most third world countries when it comes to such! There was a 20/20 or Dateline on it once. There's only one other country as bad about maternity leave as the USA, and it was some third world country in Africa!

I'm taking 6 weeks, 2 of which is my paid vacation, the rest I've had to scrimp and save to do so. It is rough, but I think (honestly) I'll be ready to go back to work. I'm really not a stay at home type person, little one or no. Of course, it helps that we won't be utilizing a traditional day care but a sitter (a family friend) one or two days a week, so I don't feel like someone else is raising my child.

In the United States as mentioned before is only about 6 to 8 weeks depending on your delivery. I could have taken 8 weeks due to my c-section but I choose to stay home under short term disability. I know that it was hard but then I delivered my daughter over a year later and was able to stay home until she was in the first grade. I did start to do part time work when the husband was at home the year before. I really appreciated the support my husband gave me. I never felt that it was not important to both of my kids that I was there. I am not trying to say if you work its bad but I had the chance and toke it. How lucky you are in Canada to have that benefit.

12 months is the standard Canadian maternity leave. It doesn't matter what job you have. How it works $$ wise is you get paid 65% of the amount of $ you made. So the better paying your job was, the more$ you will get while you are off. It is the government that pays this, not the employer.

I teach. I could get 6 weeks time (I don't have kids) but it is only "paid" if I have the days saved up. I can file for disability and will get some money but only a fraction of my already tiny salary!

Holy cow! That's a lot of time! Most jobs only allow 6 weeks paid leave. I think that's pretty much the standard. There are a few companies that allow more but they are VERY few. You are very lucky.

Oh my goodness, I knew I was fortunate, but now I know for sure!!The standard time here, with pay, is 12 months, but because I adopted our boy, I only get 9 months. Still a terrific length of time!

When I had mine it was 6 weeks. But federally there is FMLA which can be used , that's 12 weeks. FMLA does include your 6 weeks though but it gives you an additional 6 weeks. You don't get paid for it unless you have time saved up or your company has a policy about paying for it. Family Medical Leave Act. It can be used to hold "a job" not necessarily yours with your employer for things such as birth of baby, adoption (I think), an extended leave from work. I'm not sure but I think you can also use it to care for an immediate family member who is ill/sick.
You my dear, are very fortunate. What a blessing to have the time off that you have had WITH pay.
