On another thread (the one about totems) we have touched briefly on stories about animals (not necessarily pets) that have made appearances in our lives and through which we were able to see a deeper meaning. Sometimes we do adopt them as totems, but sometimes they just visit and leave you with a feeling or a message.

I shared mine about the reappearance of foxes in my life. I have another about horses, and a raccoon and another about turkeys. I will share them later, as they are kind of long, but I just wanted to start a new topic so all of us could share some of these stories together!

If this is redundant and there is another similar topic I have forgotten, please forgive and let us all know where it is so we can read it too.

There are too many stories like this to be coincidence, is what I have finally concluded.

Here is another one of mine. My mother and father were extremely happy in their marriage. They were really meant for one another, and always played and kidded. He passed on when I was 19. When mom died (I was 53), hubby and I travelled north to Illinois for the funeral and as I drove I prayed that God might give me a sign, if it was His will, during the days to come. On the day of Mom's funeral, we drove through the wintry Illinois countryside to the small cemetery where she and daddy are buried. My hubby and I were in the third car in line, and as we passed one field, two horses came literally running at full tilt across the field. I thought they were going to jump the fence, they were frolicking and chasing each other, neck and neck. They ran up to the fence beside the road, and one of the horses and I made eye contact, and they ran beside us until the fence stopped them. My hubby and I exclaimed at how neat that was and we continued to the cemetery. On our way back to town, I really wanted to see the horses again, but they were nowhere in sight. It was not until we were driving back south to Florida several days later that I remembered my prayer, and realized with a jolt that I had received my sign. I believe that my mom and dad are together running free and happy again.

By the way, my sister, in the car in front of me, did not see them. She was talking with my cousin and missed it!

Thanks Jpbluesky, that explanation puts things in better perpective for me. Love the stories from you and Rosebud, gave me goosebumps reading them. No, I dont think it is coincedence.
My girlfriends sister died in a car accident just over a year ago. She was cremated and as her coffin was being carried to the crematorian, some flowers dropped of the casket. Her brother picked them up and placed them on the coffin again. When he opened his hand it was bleeding. The family was stunned, but realized what she was trying to say. They are Maoris, and maori always take the clothes that they died in, with them. The next day the family returned to the crematorian and the clothes she had on at the time of the accident, were also cremated and placed with her ashes.
(Maoris are supposedly the first people who settled in New Zealand.Brown skinned. They have very strong spiritual beliefs, associated with animals, plants etc, much along the same lines as the Indians)

apparently the story is not to be told....I will try one more time. My husband worked with a young man who was tragically killed in an motor vehicle accident, while at work, one week before his wife was to give birth to thier second child. Of course this was a tragic blow for all involved. He was such a wonderful man and father that we still feel his loss today, just as deep at times and it has been over five years. After the birth of the child a group of women from the comapany went to visit the widow, her new born son (apptly named after his father), and her 3 year old daughter. We all drove togther in a van, on our way to their home a silver fox ran in front of us. I thought it was unusual as fox aren't usally out in the day, and are much less prevleant than red fox where I live in NY. So we went and saw the beatiful new baby, shared our condolences for the loss and happiness for the birth. After i got home I was relaying the stroy about the silver fox to my husband, as we uaslly share wildlife sightings. He asked are you sure it was a sliver fox? To which I answered yes? why? He then proceded to tell me that the young man who had passed away had a silver fox as a tatoo....his totem of sorts. It still gives me chills to relate this story to people. ...What do you all think ??? mere coincedence?? Peace,

Stacy

I can't think of any particular animal that has been with me or that I have seen more than others....you certainly have me thinking though. I have a story that is associated with the one that you share though..

Helen - people who live in the country (and city folk too!) see animals and birds each day, and they may even see significant ones. But it normally does not carry a special meaning.

Here are a few times that have hold special depth, and they might help you decipher when to look for more meaning or when to just scatter more birdseed..... For instance, at times of great importance in your life - weddings, funerals, births....do you see animals and/or birds or even plants and insects that capture your attention? During times of great stress or worry....does something from nature come to you and distract you for a moment? When you actually ask God for a "delight" during a trip or hike, as I like to put it, does He provide one for you? I think when one of these special times happens, something deep inside tells you to pay attention. Do it!!!!

I have a young girlfriend who lost her father in a car accident. During his life, he always gave his wife (her mom) single red roses for special occasions. The day after his funeral, my young friend and her mother and brother went to spend a quiet day on the beach. Out in the ocean, my friend found, all by itself, a single red rose floating on the water. At first she did not know what it was because a red blob on the water is so different. No one was about except the family. She took it to her mom, and her mom began to cry. She had asked for a sign from her husband, and apparently she got it.

I have heard story after story like this. How can it be coincidence?

Hi Jenny louise, I also see alot of hawks, but as I live in the country, they are a common site.
Also we have wild rabbits showing up alot lately. Now what I am trying to figure out is: are the hawks and rabbits I see, just normal, as I am in the country and can expect to see those, or are they there to tell me something?

i find that a beautiful sense of peace surronds me when i find myself in the pesence of dragonflies. in denver, when taking a walk, i discovered a small park with a small pond .. and i have never seen so many dragonflies .. they were just like fairies .. fairie poetry swam all about and in and out of me while i sat there .. and it is amazing .. that after leaving the park and the pond and the dragonflies .. i could not remember one word uttered in my head. i believe it was a special 'for the moment' event. i will always treasure this time.

Helen, I love praying matises!
When I am walking in the woods, I am always open to the animals, and snakes will come to me quite often. They mean change and I truely am always changing something! I had mentioned before that the great blue heron comes frequently as well. My husband's totem is the hawk and that comes around alot.
I try to take the time to sit and let critters 'speak' to me, and be comfortable in each others presence.
A story that i have is about a very doubting friend of my daughters, who came out to the farm for a visit. My daughter was trying to explain that we follow an earth path; he scoffed and asked how an animal can communicate since they are just dumb creatures. I asked what was going on in his life and he said that he was making some major decisions about changing schools. We were later standing by the garden and a large garder snake slowly came out of the flowers and laid on the boys foot. He stayed still, which i give him great credit for, and let her curl up on top of his shoe. It was really a thrill for him, and he found a new admiration for the wild critters.

For me the pray mantis always appears when I am coming up to a change or looking for a new direction.

Ahhhh .. it's a 'new year' and starting 'fresh' is a grande idea, i think. Bring on those "critter tails"!

I know the DEER in my DEER DADDY posting (Over the Fence) will forever and enduring have deep meaning for me.
