Oh my gosh! Why is it always MY cars that get hit? When I sign the title does some cosmic target sign get painted on them?

Lets see here the tragedy of events since I started driving:
In January 2002 I ran into a telephone pole with my BRAND NEW car.
A month TO THE DAY later a drunk driver smashed into the back of my dad's car that I was borrowing.
A year later TO THE DAY a neighbor backed into my car's driver side door doing damage.
A few months later I side swiped a car to avoid hitting a little old lady driving down the middle of the road.
Then a 19 year old totaled my Volkswagen Bug when I was pregnant with Nora (It was parked)
Then a friend smashed into my car when he slid on snow and ice
Then a month later (after my car had been fixed) a drunk driver totaled it

THEN today as I was driving home from some errands and a guy ran a red light and T-boned my car! He had to have been going about 40 in a school zone. He slid along my passenger side doors and into my front right fender. So I have damage to both doors and a HUGE basketball sized dent in my front fender along with damage to the wheel and the hood!

Nora, Sky and I were all in the car. I am pretty sore, but am so thankful I was belted in! Nora was in her seat and has been sick so I am not sure if her crankiness this evening is because of the wreck or being sick so we are going to the doctor tomorrow.

I need better car-ma.

They are paying for the rental car and I have all but a deposit refunded back. I haven't been able to get ahold of the adjuster that handles the Total Losses yet, so no news. Kindof frustrating!!

Alee what did the personal injury lawyer say? Can you get this taken care of soon. I know that that rental car can be expensive. If they tow your car and try to give you compensation how long will they pay for the rental car after all that? I know that most insurance companies might only give you up to 7 more days then it becomes your responsibility. I hope you can get this all squared away soon. I have been in three accidents that were not my fault and each one was with a different insurance company all had different rules.

They totaled her! My beautiful car will be towed away sooner or later. Now I am putting on my mental armor and getting ready for war! They are going to have to pay so we can buy a car outright. I don't think they are going to like the results!

Sorry Alee that I had not seen your post before I called you yesterday. I hope that you get this matter taken care of and quick. I know the feeling of being or having your car damaged when it is not your fault. If you need a ride or help just give me a call.

Tell Nora that I hope she feels better too.

That is what I told Doug! I need a horse drawn carriage! I told my friends on the horse ranch about the accident and the first thing she said was "You need a horse!" LOL

Unfortunately, it is too cold for me to transport Nora around on a bike and if a car hit us going that fast (which happens- that guy obviously wasn't even seeing anything) then we would have been dead. :(

I asked the used car dealers if they could order me in a Tank! LOL

Alee, I think it's a really good idea to get a consult. I used to work in the insurance field for 12 years (not auto) and I can tell you people who get an attorney get more then those who don't. I hated that career towards the end when I was older and wised up. The only thing that was good was the paycheck, that was wonderful!

Good luck with the attorney. Read EVERYTHING before you sign ANYTHING!
I'm sure you knew this, but it never hurts to be reminded.

Here is a link to my photo album of what my car looks like. This isn't doing the damage justice. Where the major damage is, my wheel is tilted and there is creasing in the hubcap to boot.

I made an appointment with a Personal Injury Lawyer for Monday for a free consultation. I am starting to get nervous about the dithering the insurance company is doing so I want to see what a professional has to say.

Thanks Sherri! Yes we are relatively okay. Nora complains of "Ow!" for no particular reason occasionally which is odd because she isn't a whiney child and I feel like someone attacked me with a meat tenderizer. But in the grand scheme of things- we are okay. *hugs*

Hi Alee - OMG, I just read this this morning! Thank God you are all OK! Did that happen in Billngs?

I had the same experience you guys are talking about with the rental car when Mike totaled (or the wheel from another car totaled) my car earlier this year. Last time someone wrecked my car, my insurance company just got me a rental - no problems at all, no money up front, and said they'd collect from the other guys insurance co. THIS time, no deal - they refused to get a rental, jerked us around for 2 weeks on whose "liability" it was (the wheel flew off another car and crossed the freeway and hit Mike head on - how much time does it take to determine whose "liability" that was?)and in the end we never did get any reimbursement, so things really HAVE changed in the insurance industry in the last 8-10 years.

We just all VERY grateful that you guys weren't hurt! Give Nora and Sky and extra hug from me today! Sherri

I am not sure how long about your renal situation was, but I know at least in the recent years once the car insurance company accepts to need to rent you a car- you still have to secure the car with your credit card- in case you trash the car. You trashing the rental car isn't the car insurance's financial responsibility. So they "authorize" a small amount (like $50 on your credit or debit card) that you get back as long as the car is returned in good condition.

So there won't, in the end, be any out of pocket expense. But I have to have a cash reserve to get the car until the car insurance retroactively picks up the tab and for the reserve payment.

Believe me I have called every car rental company there is out there (barring small mom and pop stores that I couldn't find) and they all have this policy and no way to get around it.

Hmm... I never had to pay ANYTHING for my rental car. Not one RED PENNY! I guess that's what I was getting at Alee~~ No reimbursement needed, no personal "Out of Pocket expense"-- since the other persons insurance paid for it all. However did I manage THAT....? Is that not how things work?

I guess it depends on the insurance companies huh? Funny thing is, we BOTH had the SAME ins! Maybe THAT'S why I didn't have to pay for my rental car, then wait for a reimbursement check. Oh, now I'm SOOOOO confused! Guess I just got Lucky not having to pay up front huh? Hope all is well and this matter is resolved in the LEAST painful way possible! Hugs-- Tracy

Thanks Talitha.

The car is borderline on being totaled or repaired. We can't decided on what we would prefer. On one hand we REALLY love our car. It's a 99 Lincoln Town Car that was a huge fluke to get! We paid cash with the settlement from our last car and even though the new car was almost 10 years old, it only had 47k miles on it! It had been driven less than 5K a year and kept in a garage. It felt like a car that was only about 2-3 years old! It also is super comfortable and super safe. On the other hand it does NOT do well in winter driving so far. Perhaps better winter tires would solve that problem. And now with the wreck, it always makes me worry that unforeseen damage will creep up to smack you later.

But at the same time we won't be able to buy new (most likely) so any used car could have been in an accident or who knows?

Hi Tracy-

Yes the insurance company will carry the bill as soon as they "accept liability" and have the adjuster (who just came) deem that the car is unsafe. So I will get reimbursed for having to pay for the rental. Thanks for the advice!

It looks like my car might be totaled so now it comes down to trying to get a decent amount back so we can replace it.

Hey Alee-- about that RENTAL car. When I had my wreck several years ago my ins. guy told me that since the accident was NOT my fault, but the other drivers, HER ins. would have to pay for my rental-- especially since my car would be in shop for NINE days and I lived 12mi's from the nearest town and had 3 small children. (Like I said, she backed out of a driveway right into the side of my car as I was going down the street-- wiped out both passenger side doors. It was UGLY!!!)

My agent warned me that the other driver's ins. agent would tell me that it was MY responsibility to pay for the rental car, but that was not true since I was not at fault. When I spoke to the other person's agent I brought up my need for a rental car and sure enough, the guy goes "Well, I'm sorry ma'am, but that's YOUR responsibility" I replied "Uh, I beg to DIFFER sir. It was YOUR client who hit ME! I was driving down the street, minding my own business, when she PLOWED RIGHT INTO ME." I told him flat out that I was not going to be left in the middle of NOWHERE with three small children and NO CAR! And I told him that HIS company was going to pay for it too, since the accident was HIS clients fault! Well, I got a rental car for 9 days at THEIR expense. Ask your agent, or even the adjustor how all that works. Don't stop until you get an answer!

PS-- even the CAR RENTAL company was surprised that I didn't have to pay for my own car! When they asked for my credit card, I told them to bill it to STATE FARM!!! At first they wanted to argue with me, but when I gave them the name of the ins. agent who was handling the "case," they shut up and gave me the car. Good luck hon! Hope you're feeling better! ~~~ Hugs ~~~ Tracy

Hi ladies!

Your sweet love and kind words have really been the tonic I was needing right now!

The insurance took their sweet time getting around to calling me, and are sending an adjuster to come look at the car. Since I had to drop Doug off at work today, I took the car to a body shop and they said it is NOT safe to drive. So then the nightmare of getting a rental car when you are strapped for cash started. Luckily I have the most awesome mom in the world and she is helping me with that until the Insurance Adjuster admits the need for it. Then I took Nora and myself down to the same day care place (maybe it should be called all day care?) and from entering the door to leaving it was 4 very LONG hours with Nora being hungry and restless. I finally had to go to the hospital cafeteria next door to feed her, poor kid and I guess they called our names right after we left.

Nora is okay, but had a virus that makes her look like she has Scarlet fever but it isn't Scarlet Fever and they took about 20 x-rays of me but I seem to be okay. I am going to go to a regular doctors office and see if I can get a recommendation for chiropractic care or physical therapy. Right now it really hurts any time I use my left side of my body and my neck and back feel really tight/need to pop.

Jodi- yes I did read the Twilight series and her car sounds about perfect right now- though I think the Town Car was about as close to a tank as I can get. The poor sweet car did it's job and really insulated Nora and I from a worse wreck. If I had a lighter weight car, his car might have thrown me all the way into oncoming traffic or the other car that had been at the intersection. I also might have had a Nissan sitting in my front seat and a dead Sky-Dog! so over all I am very thankful. And Sky hasn't shown any soreness, the poor sweet dog! Such a trooper!

I am so glad ya'll are ok. It could have been so much worse. And neon colors don't make people see you any better. I had a bright yellow VW bug and people acted like they never saw me. You would thing a bright color would get people's attention. But, no.

I hope you get it all strightened out and don't back down, girl!

Alee, I'm so glad that you are all okay and hopefully everything turns out good with the insurance...sometimes they can be difficult to deal with! I too have had the bad karma with my truck lately, at 230,000 miles I should be thankful it's still on the road but a week or so ago the 'ol darn thing stranded me in the dark in the middle of no where! UUggg!!! Almost safer to ride my horse if I could fit all my groceries on him!
