Just wanted to let everyone know that we have now been told that it could be two weeks before we get electricity!!!!! So if I am Missing In Action for a bit that is why. I will have limited access during the week while at work. Tallk to you all soon!
the Lights came back on yesterday!!! We still have no internet at home. The company said something needed to be reset at the pole outside our house. They are supposed to come today! I need to do some grocery shopping tonight!

Ice can be so nasty. We live with oil lamps all of the time, even though our house is wired for electricity. The only thing I would miss is the computer. It's a good heads up to the rest of us to make sure we are emergency ready. May all of you who are affected by this terrible weather be safe and sound!!!

Hi guys! Thanks for all your thoughts. Our power outage is due to the ice. We dont have a woodstove at our house but my MIL does so we have been sleeping there. Fortunatly the temperature today was mid 50s and is supposed to be even into the 60s this weekend. I'm mostly disappointed about loosing everything in the freezer! There is more in there than we can possibly consume in the next few days! It's nice to get heat and lights and computers at work. And the health club we belong to has hot showers so we plan to go this afternoon! Anyway I wont be posting anymore this weekend unless by some miracle we get lights again!

Wow! I can not imagine being without electricity due to ice. That is so scary and beautiful all at the same time. To have such freezing temps and yet to see the beautiful of the ice!
Praying for you all whose electricity is out and who have to deal with this nasty weather.

Sorry to hear about this Julie, hope you all are staying safe and warm. It's the same for us here in central Kentucky. Our electric has been off since Tuesday, I think it was. We've heard it might take 2 weeks to get power back on in our area too. We've been using a kerosene heater and candles. We are also huddling with our dog Lizzie, she generates quite a bit of heat. My husband, who used to be a boyscout, keeps things for times like this. He had several 12 volt batteries that we've been using to listen to the scanner and radio for local news. Although there have been inconveniences there have been some good things along with it. My husband and I are enjoying spending the evenings huddled in our blanket, sitting in the soft candle light, and having some nice conversations. But still I'm really looking forward to having a nice warm shower when the power comes back on.

Ole Ron just came in and had been checking on our emergency equipment while I was reading this. Don't know what sent him out unless he heard something on tv about the ice. We didn't have much to speak of, just slick roads for 1 1/2 days. Anyway, our emergency equipment consist of his welder/generator. It's battery was dead so he has the battery charger hooked up to it now. And the battery in the motorhome was dead. Our motorhome is our backup place to live. It has a propane heater and generator. And propane cook stove. Not only were the batteries dead, the gasoline cans are empty.
Julie, sorry you are having to go through this. It has certainly gave us a heads up on getting ready just in case. |

I'm so sorry, Julie. It's just been three days for us and it's so hard. They're saying close to two weeks, here now, too. And the weather just won't give the workcrews a break. No warm up and more snow on the way. I've been doing the huddle with the dogs thing myself. One day at a time. Just try to stay warm and safe.

Stay warm, Julie. Do you have a woodstove? My family was without power for 2 weeks during our big ice storm in 1991. If it had just been the lights out we would have been fine, but when the power is out so is the furnace for us.
I've done that water jug in front of the flashlight trick when camping. It really helps illuminate your table top or room. But it has to be a clear plastic jug (transparent - not opaque). |

Hi Julie!
I hope you are staying warm! My sister lived in Maine for a while and they are famous for their long power outages up there. What she did is got one of those old fashioned oil lamps *the kind for seeing in the dark with) and burned one of those. They put out quite a bit of heat and good light as well. If you do need more light, take an opaque plastic jug- Milk jugs work great! Fill it with water and then put it in front of your light source (flashlight, lantern etc). It diffuses the light coming form the source and throws it out in a wider direction. So instead of ha having a narrow beam of light, you have a wide beam of slightly softer light.

a few years ago I lived in Halifax, Nova Scotia and there was a huge hurricane. I was 8 days without any power. I'll tell you agreat trick for heating water. I made coffee this way. I could not go without coffee!!
I used 4 or 5 tea light candles. You need the kind of stove with the element that can be lifted up. Put the tealight under the element and light them. Take the glass coffee pot and out a few inches of water in it. It takes quite awhile to heat up, but it does get hot. Put the coffe grounds in your coffee maker. pour the hot water directly over the grinds and put your pot underneath. Voila! coffee!

I'm having flashbacks to our big ice storm about 12 years ago. We had no power for about a week and some even longer. I know how you feel. We had a fireplce then and put blankets over the doors to keep heat in the den and cooked on a propane heater. Had neighbors over. Kept all our food on the back porch. But everyone helped each other. An elderly neighbor slept on our couch several nights and our dogs slept with her to keep her warm. And it was so quiet, too.
I do hope and pray ya'lls power gets back on soon. And huddle together! Oh, and there were lots of babies born about 9 months later!
