I saw this and thought is was very cute and amusing. I thought some one you might enjoy this one. Just makes you think...

I remember my mom saying one day, when I was a kid, that the landlord was raising out rent to $37.50 a month. It made mom a little anxious. Milk used to be delivered to our door and the milkman always had time to chat. My brother and I actually walked a mile and a half to school. Every day! The most hideous crime that could be committed to us at school was someone stealing our lunch money.....wish we could go back....

1955 is the year I was born :)
I remember penny candy actually cost a penny,a hershey bar was a nickel. I got paid 50 cents an hour to babysit, and my first 'real' job was as a busgirl at a local italian restaurant, and I got a dollar an hour.
My mom and dad said that you could spend $25 on groceries and that would fill up lots of grocery sacks. Dad said that when he was young(he's 73 now) that you could buy a whole bologna, bread, and milk for a quarter!

It was fun reading those. Just think that what WE say now about the prices, sometime in the future they will laugh at US!
It is funny though, I was not yet born in 1953 but I remember my mom and grandparents talking about the pre 50's prices.
A loaf of bread for 4 cents and when they had to pay 5 or 6 cents that was SO outrageous :)
Same with hairdressers etc. Well all prices ofcourse.
My grandparents went to Canada 4 times, all by ship. My granddaddy was a sea captain in his younger days and really wanted to travel by ship. So they did. But it took 12 days to get there from Rotterdam to Vancouver, and then a few days by car to get to their destination. And now it takes some 8 hrs by plane and your there :)
And I remember granddaddy telling me about what he received in "support" during the crisis time here, pre-war. 50 cents a week, he had to pay 20 cents to somebody to take care of my grandmommy's dad in Amstardam! So they were left with 30 cents, for a week with 3 kids and 2 adults! My granddaddy did everything he could to earn just a few cents extra ( on the , what we call : black: not official, no taxes payed, nobody was to know about it) He was selling everything from flowers to bread, from fish to bunny hides! Oh the stories he told!! :)

I was alive when these were the prices! In 1970 when I was first working gas was .35 a gallon. I filled my car up for $4.00 and drove all week to work on that. Of course I only made $2.12 an hour so it's all relative.
