Heather, I have published a few academic papers..although that seems like a hundred years ago and another life entirely. In my other life, that is, before I became a mother and an artist/organic farmer, I was an Audiologist. I spent several years in grad school, got a Masters, was working toward a doctorate when I just got completely burned out. Needed to get out of the ivory tower of academia. I'm so thankful I did! In any case, I worked and published with a professor whose grant supported a stipend I received. I look back at those years and wonder how I ever managed! My first year of grad school I worked 20 hours a week at a VA hospital for a 2,000.00 stipend and "free" on the job training. It really was wonderful experience, but that's what I lived on! I took out loans to pay for schooling and help support me. Amazing!

There is no question that I would advise that you hook up with a professor to get this job done. First their name is already established so publishing entities will take notice. Furthermore, they are always in the market of wanting to publish papers, particularly if they have a student willing to do all the leg work and so forth. Publishing is the name of the game in academics. So, the more they get their name out there, the greater their chances for grant money that is dwindling all the time. Talk to your teachers/mentors and professors. They are the bread and butter here as are you!

Good luck and keep us posted! ~julia

Thanks Amie and everyone. I will be pursuing my Masters here in the next year or so. I noticed in the monthly publicatio I get, a lot of the peer written articles are by those who only have their Bachelors and one certification. I will keep it all in mind.

Freelance may be the way to market myself. Thanks for the idea!!!

I would look into trade publications in your field. Find out what their submissions guidelines are for articles, and then adapt your college papers to meet that format.

I don't know much about your specific field, but I've always gotten the impression that academic journals with a peer review process generally only publish work by PhD students or postgraduates. But trade publications would be looking for articles written by anyone practicing in the field, or by freelance writers.

I had a paper published this way once. The professor was also the editor of the magazine, and wrote the assignment with the understanding that a selection of the papers would be published. The paper was more of a pr piece on a charitable organization, not a standard academic paper.

When I was in college, I got several English and History papers back with the comment "This could be published". But I was too shy to talk to them after class, so I don't know what kind of publications the professors were thinking of! How silly is that? I really wish now that I had pursued it. Good luck!

My field of study is Health Information Management. Right now, a big issues is getting a viable electronic health record program established in all U. S. State while protecting the privacy right of patients. There is a lot more to my job, but this issue is one that President-Elect Obama mentioned in his healthcare plan, so I watch with great interest.

I think the HIM community needs a breath of fresh air shake up. Eletronic health records have been on the map for over 15 years, yet little is being done to push ahead.

Heather, what is your field of study?

Hi Heather!
I've never had a paper published, but my History prof did recommend I publish one that I had written and that he had submitted for a scholarship (which won btw!) Life got in the way and I never ended up publishing but you should definitely go for it if you have something in mind. You may already have some academic journals that interest you and your advisor may know of others that would fit the topic you decide on. Once you have your paper written, get some feedback from your peers and your profs (make use of those office hours they always have!), any advice, things you should add, take out, what format it needs to be in, etc. Once it's ready I'm pretty sure you just submit it to the journal/association.

Good luck! You'll do great!

Thanks Alee. I have some interesting ideas for my career field, to bring it into 2009. It is a little stagnant. Thanks. I will talk to my academic advisor, who is also the department head.

My professors are awesome but sometimes stuck in "back in the day" and I want to shake things up!!! : )

Heather- I feel pretty safe in saying that all colleges require their professors to publish a certain amount of material each year. I had not known about this until I worked for several professors and learned more about their work life. So, while I don't know how to get published in an academic sense (I know it can be a grueling process with peer review and such sometimes) if you have a professor that is helpful and involved with the students instead of being aloof- I would suggest talking to them. They SHOULD be very willing to point you in the right direction. If your professors are all duds, then make an appointment to talk with the department head/dean- they will know for sure.
