Ok, I am having the hardest time with this house. I have never been like this before. I think it's more my age now. But I am in such a slump. I have no idea what to do or even how to do it.

So we have lived here 4 years now. It's an old limestone farmhouse way out in the country. We have done so much work on the house and it's taken so long that I'm just tired. I want someone to come do it all for me. My brain just will not get to work here.

I know what kind of style I like. Eclectic- hippy -country. Is there such a thing? I like old things, I love stars and pottery and rustic. I have so much stuff but I cannot get it all down where I want it to be. I know I'm just rambling but I thought maybe this might help.

We just got our dining room finished last week. This is the last room to be done. So we had book shelves built in with cabinets at the bottom with a window seat with storage under the big new window. Book shelves on either side of window. Crown molding all around. New ceiling. I traded milk for the beautiful light fixture. The color is Ryegrass from Sherwin-Williams. So pretty. All trim and shelves are white.

So now I just can't seem to get things in there. It's been so long a mess with things still in boxes. I would love for my SIL to come from Col. Springs (she's an I.D.) and just do it for me but then it would not be me. I just need a kick start to get it done. ome motivation.

I just go on and on, don't I? Sorry. Just need a little help.

Kris

Nancy, that's exactly what I did last night! I had the guys put a shelf over the window, too. My window is 5x7 so the shelf was the perfect size to get 4 place settings on either side. It has a divider down the middle b/c it was so long. I put one set on one side and one on the other. It's so pretty. I'll just go in there and look at it and I love it. It's so neat how some things just fall into place. And I did find pillows on sale in a green and white pattern at Hamerrick's a few weeks ago. My cat likes to sleep on them, though, so I have to keep them stacked upright on the sides.

Karen, I'd love to have that lace fabric. How do you go about the bartering, though? My big window is 5' high by 7' long. The other is half that size. That would be perfect. And get me to sewing, too. Yes, please e-mail me a picture. I love to see it.

It feels so good to get things done! I am going to put all my cook books in there now. I keep meaning to get my DD out here to help me with pictures. I still have dial-up and I have NO idea how to do it myself.

Thanks, ya'll! I knew I could get lots of help and inspiration here.

Kris

If you are thinking lace curtains I have white lace that I intended to make curtains but never got around to it. We could barter or you could just have for postage. I can email you a pic if you are interested. Also if you took pics of some of your items and the rooms you are working on I bet a lot of us farmgals could make some suggestions based on the surroundings.

Kris,
Wouldn't those old green dishes you found be pretty in your dinning room on those new shelves? Do you have any oil lamps? Pretty pillows or a quilt for that window seat.

Ok, this morning I've been busy. I have 2 rooster cookie jars my hubby has given me that I have had out in the laundry room. I brought them in and washed them and I think I'll work around those. Also have a hen teapot and creamer. Love the chickens. Also I found a box of old dishes a friend had given me years ago (also in the laundry room) so pulled them all out and am washing them now. Then brought out the old dishes I found here when we bought this house. They could have been some of the first dishes the couple had when they built this place. They are Homer Laughlin stamped on the bottom and numbered, too, in the Empire Green pattern. There are 4 big plates, 4 little bowls, 2 small plates and 2 saucers and 3 cups. So I need to find a few more to make a complete 4 piece set. They are a totally clashing green but just beautiful with the pretty pink rose in the middle. I guess I could call some antique stores to see if they might have some more.

I would like some advice about curtains and what type books to put in a dining room book shelf now. I would think no paper back novels. Maybe cookbooks and other pretty books. Also I am always stumped about window treatments. I'd like to go with something light and airy in maybe white cotton. Maybe a little lacy.

So need more help with these two things. I do seem to have a bit more ooommpphhh today. It's raining like crazy and has been all night. So can't get out much. So I guess somethings kickin' in here.

Thanks Jami! Kris

Kris, here's what I do...because I get into the same funk as you're in and although I do enjoy decorating sometimes the juices just don't flow...

I pick my favorite thing that just HAS to go up somewhere and build around it. I just start somewhere...put it up and then my creativity kicks in. I don't know how it works but it just does. Sometimes it's a while before I get it all the way I like but I keep building on my little theme.

Your house sounds beautiful. Enjoy your hard work and if you don't get to decorating it....just call your style "simple country." Ha.

Very good idea. I have thought about it, so now I should just do it.

I've also thought about having a purge party. Get people to come help purge the mess and take home things they might want for helping out. Then getting it all together for a big yard sale. Might work.

I do have a few friends that have way too perfect houses. I do not want a museum at all. I just want things nice and neat with no more CLUTTER. I'm tired of the clutter. So I should not get them to come help. I want farmgirl friend help!

Do you have any friends that are naturally good at decorating? My neighbor is a person that just has the knack of putting a bunch of stuff together and making it look good. If you have a friend like this I would invite them over for coffee, cookies and decorating.

That's what I have done so far. I have my stars all over the table ready for an inspirational moment to hit. I had them all in the windows. Just all kinds of pretty, different sizes and colors of stars. And my small pottery bowls and vases are on one of the shelves now. Just sitting there like they don't know what to do with theirselves yet. I'd like to hang the stars all alont the top of the wall under the crown mold. Maybe the smaller ones. I'm just afraid to put holes in the walls, too.

And another thing. I have magazines and books all over the house that I've been looking at for weeks now. I think I need to go get a Cottage Living mag and look thru it. I like that one.

I know it will happen one day. Maybe I need to plan a party here and set the date. That always helps.

Thanks ya'll. Kris

Sometimes just taking one thing out of a box and putting it somewhere gets the decorating juices going. All of a sudden you end up bringing out more and more. How about just starting out with putting something on the table? Decorating one table isn't so bad. It may lead to more!!

Hi Kris... maybe dig out some of your fave magazines and look at the pages that really spark your creativity..then look to see if you have items that can work the same way and then go from there.
Good luck to you.
Oh..and put on some happy music and it will fall into place.

Hi Kris,
Maybe a week long breather to just relax and not think anything about decorating for only that long might help. :) Sometimes, if we just step back and let the worries roll, sometimes our greatest inspirations will come.
hugs!
