My family has always eat Blackeyed peas, Cabbage and Hogs Jowl on New Year's Day. Of course you have to have a big pone of Cornbread too. I remember hearing my Granny say "kids you have to eat this, it brings you good luck for the year".
Your family have any food that you always eat starting the New Year?

We had Ham, collard greens, blackeyedpeas, cabbage and fried taters yummmm. The cabbage is cooked with a silver dime. My aunt always does this. A nice southern new years dinner.

Hoppin' John - blackeyed peas w/ rice, seasoned with bacon, onion and tabasco. Then leftover holiday fare if we're still hungry

White been soup w/left over ham, and garlic dried tomato corn muffins and canned fruit( plums) for dessert.

Ha! Our WA state unemployment is so backed up because of everyone that's out of work, we haven't been able to file for last week yet - ususally we have our check by now. So, with Christmas, son's visit, etc. we are eatin' what's in the cupboard! Tonight we had turkey burgers with no buns, pork and beans, Clementines, and cinnamon rolls left over from Christmas (freshened in the microwave). Not exactly gourmet fare, but hey - it's already been paid for!!

Cube steaks with a yummy italian dressing sort of sauce, black eyed peas, collard greens, and multi grain baguette bread. Ice cream sundaes for dessert (husband's idea)
It was a nice quiet day around here. I got some reading and knitting and laundry done and everyone was just calm and quiet. I like days like this.

We try a variation on the black eyed peas, ham and greens that is a southern New Year's Day tradition. We make a BIG pot of soup, using lots of beans including black eyed peas; we add sauteed onion and the left-over ham and turkey from the holidays, and let the soup simmer all day. Then I make jasmine rice and biscuits, and that is our New Year's Dinner. With cookies...... :)

My kids and grandkids were here. Abby, #2 DD, brought black eyed peas. I had ham, turnip greens, corn muffins and made a little sweet potato souffle with nuts. We actually had a nice time. The grandkids were sick, Abby had the bad sore throat that I have still. But it was nice. They played Twister after we ate. I watched and took pictures. No way I'm playing that game again! Then we tried to play the kids version of Phase 10 but couldn't figure it out! So I got to do #10 on my list of goals fot this new year. Relax and enjoy my family!
So they are all gone and it's just me now. It's so peacefully quiet. Hubby was in Texas last time we talked. He loves when everyone's here.

Slept until 8:30 am this morning,,,with my ususal time of getting up at 3 or 4 in the morning, this was VERY unusual...
Dh is now laid off until March, wo we have no real set anything, might go and see Grandsweeeties today, and play in the snow....(grin)....Play, Play, Play....yea!!!

Joy, that sounds good, having dinner together was the important part, didn't matter what we ate. Today we are just hanging, resting. A good way for us to get ready for the New Year.

Looks like coffee for me..LOL..DH let me sleep in until NOON today!!! Mom is making something wonderful smelling in the crockpot, so I guess its a secret til dinner. :O)

We are having guest for supper tonight. Fixin black eyed peas/spinach soup, cornbread and cole slaw. Sound like a party menue? When we have company, I don't do anything fancy. I just cook more of what ever we are having. |

we don't really have anything special for New years day, but our New years Eve tradition is to put a new calendar, a tooth pick, some money and some food on the kitchen table before midnight. the calender represents the new year, the toothpick is wood representing the wood in your house so that you will have a roof over your head. the money is so that you'll have $ in the new year and the food is so that you will always have food in the new year. Just something fun our family has alway done:)
