Posted - Jan 01 2009 : 05:18:35 AM What about St. Augustine, FL? It's a beautiful little city. Sarasota is nice, Venice beaches have great shells, you could just travel down the coast! Wherever you go, have fun. Karin

Posted - Dec 31 2008 : 4:53:49 PM >> << Welll...we aren't that far from the Outer Banks, but right now it's downright freezing..I Mean -- really freezing. The temps dropped 10 degrees in less than an hour, so -- at 3 p.m. it was 55..by 4 p.m. it was 44..
That being said, I think the most fun place I went w/Tom in the truck was a little town in Central Florida..I believe it was just outside Ocala..it was all tree-lined streets with Live Oaks...small stands with people selling oranges & other fruit. We were there in Feb., and it was already in the 70's --
Tom & I grew up in So. Cal., so it was always easy for us to leave the coast and go out to the Desert..we bought land there wayy back in the day, 'cause right now it's usually 75 or so in Palm springs or Palm Desert. There are low cost vacation destinations there. When we lived up on the mountain in Idyllwild, it was Such a Treat to drive down the mountain, an' go fom 32 degrees & snow, to the Warm Desert!! -- it's worth any weekend or week to go & visit. Great shops an' lots of things to do!!

Posted - Dec 31 2008 : 4:52:15 PM I wouldn't have any idea where to go down that way. I've been to Tampa and Orlando many, many years ago and just never felt the urge to go back. I've always had this feeling that looking good in a bikini was a requirement of the tropics. Stupid, I know, but I really think I'd feel uncomfortable fully dressed in that heat and even more uncomfortable if I wasn't fully dressed!
Kristin, you go for it, girl! Clench your teeth, grip the arms of your seat and go. Better yet, put your favorite cd in your walkman (or whatever they call them now), close your eyes and transport yourself there in your mind ahead of the plane. You'll regret it forever if you don't go.

I may be doing just that myself in Feb. When I saw this question, I thought how weird is this! My friend that I look after who is 91 is in the Virgin Is. with her daughter til Feb. 2nd. Her son flew out there with her and was going to go back and get her but now he can't. They've been wanting me to come for a long time but I'm so afraid to fly. I told them if I made the flight alright to Wash. this past Oct. I'd think about coming then. The flight from Atl. to the island would be about 4 hours. That is so long. I barely made the 2 hour flight from Denver to Portland. Her DD just e-mailed me to see if I wanted to come get her. I really want to but I am so scared. But it would be stupid not to because it would all be paid for.
So I need encouragement really bad now. And I need someone to knock me in the head and call me stupid for not taking advantage of this opportunity. It may not come around again.
But I'd also go to Sav. I used to live there and it's been a few years since I've been back. Or Amelia Island off Fla.

Posted - Dec 31 2008 : 12:45:37 PM Well, posting this from sunny Florida.......gals, go to Sanibel Island, or Seaside. Savannah is wonderful, but a little chillier if you are looking for the tropic type weather. I love Savannah, too. I think if it was free, I would go to someplace to see snow!!!! Just for a week-end....in a warm cabin, with beautiful views and a big fireplace.

Posted - Dec 31 2008 : 10:28:49 AM If I had free airline tickets and free hotel room, I would give it to one of my farmgirl sisters. No airline, no hotel for me. However, just for the heck of it, I would drive my motorhome to Savannah and and meet up with Violet. |
