Some of you shared my concern over my youngest son coming home from Jackson WY for the holidays. He ran into a big storm in Oregon on the gorge and had to turn around and backtrack, then go through the backroads over a mountain pass. Nevertheless he arrived safely. Well, he left yesterday to return to Wyoming and we were feeling pretty confident about the weather. He called a couple of times on his journey to say how good the roads were and how he was making good time. He told me he'd call this morning after he got up (he was planning on sleeping in) to let us know he arrived safely. In the middle of the night, dh jumped out of bed, like he does when he's awakend suddenly, ran into the living room - he said he heard my phone. I heard "hello, hello" then nothing. I jumped out of bed (my ear is still deaf so I hadn't heard the phone) and went into see what was going on. Dear, techno challenged husband, hadn't seen that it was a text message. It said "I got home alive." and that was it. Well, this morning, earlier than I expected, he called to tell us of his harrowing experience on Teton pass. If you've never been over Teton Pass, it is a killer - very high and very steep. They got OVER 70 inches of snow while he was here, and the winds were about 90 miles an hour on top of the pass. He said it was the worst he's ever seen. Cars were everywhere. He stopped to check on one guy that was just sitting in the middle of the road, and his transmission had gone out. Always the (foolish) hero, Cody pushed him through the maze of cars and over the pass. Cody's road is right at the bottom of the pass and when he made it there, he got down the road about a mile and saw his flashing red and blue lights and his girlfriend's truck in the ditch. She was on her way to be there when he got home and someone passed her and forced her off the road. He and the cops were able to get her out of the ditch and both made it safely to his house. What a night!! He got in about 3 am. Amazing to go over 900 miles with no problem, then run into that mess less than 5 miles from your home!

I know - when we go visit him (always in the summer!) my brakes always end up stinking going down the other side because it's so steep. It's pretty hard for him to get home not going over it though, because he literally lives right at the base of it on the WY side.

Oh my gosh, Sherri! Teton Pass is Horrifying. I absolutely hate it. It is devastatingly beautiful in spring and summer, but in bad weather I don't know if I would have the nerve to go over it. One of my greatest fears is to go over a cliff or something.

I am SOOO SOOO SOOO glad that your son made it home safe. I hope his Girlfriend is okay from her accident as well.

I am very glad your son made it home. I have been over that pass many times too. Once in late winter with only a small amount of snow on the road and it was ugly. We had those winds up in Billings too. They were strong last night.

Sherri, If that's the pass I'm thinking of it scared the heck out of me in the summer. I can see how that guys transmission went out it is steep and winding. And no we never stop worry about our kids--my mom says she still worrys about me! JoAnn
