I really am turning into my mom... Which is really not all bad...
I seem to be following a real trend here. I just folded up a piece of ribbon that really is too small to do much with but hated to toss it as it was so pretty. Yesterday I rescued a rubberband from the celery in the crisper tray, and put it on the doornob, and I even bought a turtle neck top that my husband said looked like something my mother would wear! My mom is almost 80! She is a young looking "old"er lady! and I Love her dearly but is this really necessary?

I have definately become my mother. And Cheryl, where else would you put the rubber band except on the door knob? I save things too. Like walmart sacks, empty boxes, plastic bags and don't forget cottage cheese cartons. I sent home left over christmas food with the grandkids, using walmart sacks, empty boxes, plastic bags and cottage cheese cartons. I have learned NOT to use my tupperware or dish of any kind.
On a serious note, when saving zip lock bags, I never save a bag that has had raw meat stored in it.
On the call home subject, My Mom told me one time as I was leaving on a 3 hr trip, Call when you get there. I said why, she said so I will know you got there safe. Daddy said, of course she got there safe, turned to me and said, call if you have a problem. |

hehe. I'm more like my mammy than my mother in a lot of things, thought I find that my humor is turning more and more into my mother's lol. Well I think it's great you're saving things :-p

I love this. I guess I am turning into my mom and MIL and grandma, all rolled into one. I've been noticing alot lately how much I am like them. I have been saving all containers, plastic bags, even reuse the freezer and sandwich baggies. And Christmas day I noticed mom had used the fabric tie that she had gotten wrapped around something she had bought that had the velcro at the end to wrap a gift with. I did, too! She said she just can't throw stuff like that away. She saves every walmart bag (they are the king and queen of walmart) and brings them up here every time they come. I use a lot at the farmer's market.
I think it's so neat to be like this. They were all raised to not waste a thing and we need to raise our kids and grandkids this way, too. One day we may need that little bit of string or that perfect rubberband.
I also save all my hay string for tomato ties. They are great and they are biodegradable, too.
I remember my husbands grandmother peeling potatoes. She'd get those peels so thin you could see through them. It'd take her an hour to peel 4 potatoes. She was just raised to not even waste that.

My great grandmother used to cut apart seams so carefully that she would save the string and then she would re use/ re sew the clothes= any clipping from the clothes got saved into to a bag and once clothes were to worn to use, they were made into rag rugs or into "cloth feathers". She even made pillows out of the cloth feathers!

The poet Donald Hall, one of my favorites, wrote a book called String to Short to Be Saved. He found a box in the barn at his father's house labeled that with the very bits of string in it. New Englanders are famous for saving everything!.

I hear you Amy.. I always tell my grown kids to call when they get home..& now that we live so far from them,, I try to figure out where they are on the road at a given time.. & anticipate their call..I also tell them "Drive Safe" My Dh always reminds me.. They are not going to drive Unsafe...it's a mom thing....

Oh and Cheryl - I inherited a dresser from my grandma last year and in the bottom drawer is all her sewing stuff including the elastic/fasteners from what looks like every bra she ever had, 1 inch bits of ribbon, and even some bias binding that has to be from the 30's - it is wound on a wood piece that was used for display.

I think it happens to all of us, although my mom told me I'm turning into my grandma because I told our oldest son and his family to call when they got home. Grandma always did that. Although in my defense my DS was driving over an hour through snow on an unfamiliar road, and when grandma said it to us we were going 2 miles up the road in good weather

You bet! I love my mom , she is more like a friend at times... I only wish she lived closer..especially as she gets older..I get hand me downs too from her..when I go visit.. I came home fromchristmas with a new sweater.. (she didn't wear it much.. she said..)

There are things that I love seeing in myself from my mom. We have had a blast these past couple of weeks and some nights we have laughed so hard that we couldn't breathe. She is even sending me home with a bunch of her gently worn clothes! Yipee! I love it! I think that if you embrace those things that you love about your family and accept those traits into you life- it makes it so you carry that person around with you a bit every day.

Cheryl, I went through the same thing this summer when I was hanging laundry on the line and wearing a scarf on my head (otherwise known as a farmgirl tiara). it was really eerie but in a good kind of way. It's been happening more and more often since I found the farmgirls - and the farmgirl in me.
