honey hunk and i had a most marvelous three day weekend ... travelled to 'land-between-the-lakes' at the eastern tip of kentucky. hank took a 5 hour hike through a national forest on saturday with Cabin and Creek .. while i 'antiqued' .. all the way down into tennessee! (found some wonderful homespun, linsey-woolsey and olde-quilt remnants .. and some fun olde books! This was our first 'over-nighter' with the pooches .. and they travelled wonderfully! we're looking forward to lots of camping trips with them come next spring. On this trip, i especially looked at farmhouses and barns on the back-roads and took lots of photos. as much as i love the forests with trees filled with their green summer finery .. there is an ethereal (hmmmm .. did i make that word up?)

NOPE! just looked it up:

e·the·re·al Characterized by lightness and insubstantiality; intangible. Highly refined; delicate. Airy. Of the celestial spheres; heavenly. Not of this world; spiritual.

... and 'ethereal' surely describes the winter-time trees with their 'airy' leafless branches .. and the ability to see way "into" the belly and bones of the forest. And today, when the four of us hiked silently through the forest it truly was spiritual. Lots of 'a-ha!' moments!

Had a chance in the evenings after dinner, to sit by a roaring fire at the inn and read MaryJane's Magazines. HONESTLY! farmgirlfriends! If you don't have these .. they are a MUST! The recipes made me drool ... even though we had just eaten a sumptuous dinner (2-inch thick porkchops that melted in your mouth .. and tender, juicy prime rib that 'satisfied the soul'! Now! i must admit that we also gobbled down a huge plate full of 'hand-cut, fried potato chips smothered with cheeses, scallions, tomatoes, and several other fresh veggies! Made me think of some of MaryJane's bake-over recipes .. but probably not as heart-healthy as hers are!

I ordered several Farmgirl 'bake-over' mix packages and am excited to start preparing them for holiday meals! Also had time this weekend to finish my latest Janice Holt Giles book (Plum Thicket) about the memories of a middle-aged woman who has returned to the grandfather's farm of her childhood. Giles' books are always about country life from years past, farm folk, farm ways, farm lore. She makes you feel like you are there living the life along with the characters she writes of. AND .. i even got to do a little 'hand-sewing' on some more dollies!

As always though, it is grande to be 'home sweet kentucky home'!

Thanks, Frannie.

Can't wait to see them. Have a wonderful, safe trip. Hope my daughter & her boyfriend will still make it from Seattle for Christmas Eve. We're supposed to have lots of snow, so we'll have to see if they can get here. Rather have them safe, but am looking forward to a nice family Christmas.

Take care,

Debbie
