Texas State just sent out a mass email that Wikipedia will no longer be accepted as a resource for information for college work. I guess it was being quoted like 3 times in one paper, resulting in people not researching further. Also, Wikipedia is not a reliable resource, as a lot of it is written by the public. I found this interesting and actually, I am glad. A lot of my instructors will not accept it as a source but the college finall cracked down. I think it is a sign of laziness when you see a paper with 10 wikipedia references. At the end of each article are more referenes a person could potentially use. How do you feel about it?

Heather,

I teach at a local community college in Baltimore, Maryland, and, under "threat of death," students are told on the first day of class, in the syllabus, and countless times throughout the semester to NOT use Wikipedia as a source for their colleg papers. I've told students that they can use it to look things up for fun or interest but not to use it for anything formal or for school credit. I know some professors/instructors who go crazy if they catch students using it for papers. The biggest problem is that anyone can post, you can sometimes get bogus info, and most young college students don't take the time to do real research to validate the info. You know, if it's in print, it must be true!

Happy Holidays,

To me, Wikipedia is the real computer expression of "GIGO"... garbage in, garbage out. At least calculators don't lie to you when you.

Yes, as a way to get started in research. Nice way of putting it Alee.

I too like Wiki, but I also usually follow up the information it gives with further research. It often an "point the way" so to speak

You can do a LOT of research online, especially now that libraries have downloaded documents, periodicals, books, etc. Another reason they don't like Wikepedia is people were coming in with identical papers, nothing deep and interesting. College is another level of learning and it is expected that the work should reflect that.

Teresa- I was actually given an online link for my math classes to use the calculators. I figure if you can't do the math normally, without a calculator, that is your loss. Darned if you do, darned if you don't. : )

That's funny...when I want to find out more about, say, an author who's book I'm reading, I frequently go to wikipedia first. Of course, I know enough to look for sources on the page. I've been steered to some good biographies that way.

Well, I guess it goes with doing math with calculators. Just an observaton, not an endorsement!

Oh! Thanks goodness!

I hope that some of the public schools start to follow suite. My older niece and nephew are in the middle school and when they started writing research projects, they were taught to do their research online! I asked them if they ever go to the library and actually looked in books and encyclopedias for factual information and they looked at me like I had a second head. It is so sad.

Thank god! What a load of hogwash it is--sorry, but I've thought it should be placed in "satire" for how inaccurate the information is...most of it is written by amateurs, and is almost all baseless.
