When I'm in any store and I have alot of items I let those with a few go ahead of me. I was actually told oh honey you'll be here all day if you let all of us go :-p and they make me go hehe. It touches people when I say go ahead of me you only have a few items. They are taken back by my simple lil act of kindness. I like it when people do that to me.

Yes the name calling aka their own name, so many people don't do that and sometimes when you do people make you feel weird but whatever it is their birth name. It makes it more personal too. I took the Dale Carnegie class and I still remember and think often of how they said saying someone's name is the best sound to them. I think we just take for granted doing things that are tiny and oh so meaningful! YES annie I've had people that jump line and I have been waiting for awhile.....that IRKS me so bad. I am someone that if you are acting rude or out of line I will let it be known. I don't put up with that and when I get out of line I welcome someone to remind me. I truly do. I own up to my actions. I always make small talk with customers and you know what is great is they open up most of the time and tell you something special because after all everyone likes to have someone listen to them:)

I'm with all of you too. No matter what store I'm in, I will let someone or two go in front of me in the check out line. They always seem so surprised by the action. Some say thank you and some don't say anything at all. But it still makes me feel good. "I've done my good dead for the day". It's just one of those "pay it forward" type of things - I've done a kind genture to you, now you do something nice for someone else. I'm retired and have all the time in the world, so I'm in no hurry when I'm shoppying. And now at this time of year and everyone seems in a hurry to get their shopping over with, I've had people just sort of take a breath when I've told them to go ahead of me. I always put in a Merry Christmas as well to them and the check out person - I always look at their name tags and call them by name. They get such a smile on their face when I do that.

It's all just a matter of a little bit of kindness given to someone else in our lives.

I always try to do that too, but I have had a few experiences when I didn't see the person with a few items behind me and they decide to line jump. They would say something like "You have a lot, I'm sure you won't mind if I go first". Well, I don't mind but it would be nice for them to have asked differently.

I also like to say something nice to clerks who check me out. I usually say thank you to them, I guess for taking my money. hehe But I wait on customers at both my jobs and it really makes my day when the customers take the time to talk to me and wish me a good day. Sometimes when you're having a bad day the kind acts of a stranger or people that you know can really be uplifting.

I do it if I can spare the time. Sometimes I am on my lunch hour so I can't, because I have to get back to work.
I have also been known to hand over a buck or too if someone is short-especially if the person is elderly.

I've been making sure to say Merry Christmas to every checkout/ counter person I've encountered since Thanksgiving. They always seem so shocked and surprised and then they smile! And they say it back, but it seems like they've gotten into just doing the job and become bored. They always didn't seem to expect someone to just see them and be nice. I love Christmas. People are so hungry to be simply "seen".

I do this too. It also reminds me of a George Carlin bit where he lets someone go ahead of him in line and then the fellow's wife comes with a grocery cart full of items. JoAnn

Me too.. I am not usually in ahurry so I often let those people with a few items go first. People are ususally very pleased and thank me..Speaking nicely or complimenting a clerk too is helpful when they are very busy and appear grumpy.

Yup! Me too! And I am always thankful when someone lets me go first especially when I only have one or two and Nora is late for a nap!

I also try to always look the checker in the eye when I say "Thank you! Have a good day!" That way they know I mean it instead of some rote polite thing to say.
