So,
What is yalls favorite Christmas goodies?
When I was young and growing up ; in that small 4 room cabin with no in door plumbing
A cook stove and a stove in the small living room that was a cold stove.
Mom is the one who made Christmas special for us kids
She made sure we got Homemade cookies , candy , pie and a applesauce cake
We kids usually got a prestent or two.
Even when times where the hardest Mom always found a way to make Christmas for us.
One candy I make every year ; even though I am now Diabetic type 2 is
Peanut butter pinwheel candy
I don't really know the correct name of the candy.
But
You take a box of powder sugar ( I think maybe there is 3 cups in it??)
anybody know for sure?
Melt at least 2 sticks of butter or margine.
put the powdered sugar in a mixing bowl.
Take the butter and mix slowly in the powdered sugar until it looks like cookie dough
You may add a teaspoon of vanilla in the mixing.
You need a long piece of wax paper.
put the dough on the wax paper ; take another piece of wax paper and roll out the "candy dough" in a rectangle shaped.
maybe like cookie dough ; like you are going to cut sugar cookies.
then take peanut butter
( Mom always used Jiff; you may use the crunky type if you like; Mom always used the regular creamy kind)
Spread peanut butter almost to the edges expect leave a little of the edges with out peanut butter.
Take the wax paper that the candy is on
Roll up Jelly roll fashion.
Seal the wax paper at the ends; put in the refre. over night.
Take the candy out and un roll
Slice in about a 1/4 inch thick or as thick as you like
These may be kept in a tin can with wax paper in between the layers of candy.
You can keep the candy at room temperature.
Yummy
Mom made the best fudge too.

This is a wonderful thread. Pinkroses, I always enjoy your stories! And everybody else's too. I have an uncle who has always made fruitcake cookies every Christmas. I'm not sure he'll be up to making them this year. I've got to call him and get that recipe!

The potato candy did/does have a boiled potato to which the box of powdered sugar is added after you mash the potato. It's rolled out and spread with peanut butter, etc, as already posted. We made it in the 50's in Nevada and SoCalif. No butter or margarine in the recipe we used.

We have Russian Tea Cakes too, although in my family they are called "ration cookies" because Grandma would only put as many on the dessert plate as there were people at the table. We also have spritz and sugar cookie cut-outs that are from the 1942 edition of Women's Day - my great aunt gave me the recipe when I got married, she has made them for 60 plus years, now I make them.

I love sugar cookies with a touch of almond extract and you can make candy canes out of them by tinting some of the dough red and putting peppermint extract in too! Oh Yum!!

My gram used to make steammed "suet plum puddings with yummy vanilla sauce and fudge & divinity. I remember how good they were. I made a steamed pudding for my dad the year after Gram died for his Christmas gift. It was pretty good. I also made divinity.. (I lost her fudge recipe.. still looking for a good one)....But the divinity never turns out as good as my grams..I think I might try again with the puddings sometime...

The Canadian farmgirls will probably know my favorite. It is butter tarts with the raisins. I absolutely love them, both my Mom and my Grandma made them. I also love a homemade date filled
sandwich cookie that my Mom used to make just for me every Christmas until the she passed away. Funny, I have never tried to make them, I guess it just wouldn't be the same.

Hehe! I have say, that we've found a new favorite after last year.:) My husband grew up in Florida so snow was a luxury...so says he..lol
Anyways, my grandmother used to tell stories of sugar snow and making maple candy with it. Last year, my husband's first time living in the "North", there was a pretty sugar snow with ice under neath that froze really well. Of course, we didn't have maple like way back when so we improvised and dug out the maple pancake syrup. It froze wonderfully and made delicious hard candy. Hubby can hardly wait for this year's snow. He's already scoping out new flavor and brands of pancake syrup..hehe!:)

Grandma always made mince-filled cookies (the NoneSuch kind). I could never seem to have enough of those. The cookie part wasn't all that sweet, but the center was soooo good. I found a recipe that looked pretty close this past year and I'm going to try it this month. They were always my favorite growing up.

I'm not much of a sweets person, but I did love a gingerbread cake my ex's aunt would make. It was very yummy and light. DD loves gingerbread cookies so we make those too. We also love flavored hot cocoas and warm spiced cider. Great on a cold day. Wish we would have a few right now. It's 80 ugh!

My mom always made fudge, chocolate chip cookies and what we called spider cookies (1 c. chunky peanut butter & 1 pkg butterscotch morsels melted together then a large can of chinese noodles is mixed in and cookies are dropped from spoon on a sheet of waxed paper and chilled). Oh and she always had a big container of Chex Mix. She would also make a fruit cake at Labor Day with those candied fruit and lots of nuts then soak it every week in Sherry or Rum. By the time Christmas rolled around it was mighty potent so we kids never got any until we were much older!

DH's Mother made an Italian cookie called Scaletti (sp?). Basically almost a doughnut like cookie deep fried and then dunked in hot honey. In her later years she started to make pitzells but that never felt like Christmas.

I usually try to make a little of each (except the fruitcake & pitzells) throughout the holidays. Need to get baking I guess!

The kiflis sound great, thanks for posting the recipe. We always make Danish peppernuts, shortbread, russian tea cookies, sometimes fudge. It is funto cook up some goodies to give to friends. I also make Dundee cakes for one of my friends, it is like a rich pound cake with pecans, dates, orange peel and whatever yo think of, thrown in. Then you pour rum over the cake every other day for about a month. It isn't as heavy as fruitcake, and it is delicious. I remember making fruitcakes with my mother years ago, and they were nice.

One year when I lived in a house that had two stoves I put my fruitcakes in to bake, I think the temperature is around 275 and you bake them for several hours, well i comppletely forgot about them for three days, so that year I had beautiful cinderblocks.

I've never heard of potato candy. My mom used to make fudge and peanut brittle. My favorite treat, though, is the much maligned fruit cake. I swear, when my mom makes it, it's delicious.
FebruaryViolet Posted - Dec 01 2008 : 12:01:33 PM
Maybe it's a regional taste? What you described was what Gram always called potato candy--in fact, I refused to eat it for many years because I thought it really had potatoes in it--guess maybe some actually did!!!

You know My grandmother in the South here made potato candy
It had mashed potates in it
It had powdered sugar in it; but I don't remember her putting peanut butter in it.
I think sometimes she covered it with melted chocolate??

Ohhh, Sheila...up "north", well, where my Great Grandmother lived and baked, we called that "potato candy". Don't know why, because there isn't any potato in it, but maybe because of the white color, and the "starchy" texture!

I always loved sugar cookies with pieces of candy cane in them. Mom made up the best icing for the top (lots of butter, it seemed) and she colored it with a little red food coloring, then sprinkled some more candy cane on top!
