I got a call this morning about 6 am from dh - first he said he was ok, then told me he was on his way to work on I-5, about 50 miles from home, when either someone threw a tire and wheel off the overpass or one came off of a car up ahead, but it was still dark so he isn't sure exactly where it came from Hit out car dead center in the front and bounced about 30 feet up into the air. Hubby was able to get the car off the road, but it's totaled. State patrol said he was a very very lucky man - if he had been 1 second faster, it would have hit the windshield and that would have been a much worse story. Went up to pick him up and have our car towed home. It's bad - but dh is fine. Just lost a day's work and a car - that's a pretty good outcome I'd say.

Thanks for sharing your story EllynAnne - I too had thought about his future reaction. So far he seems fine - I am the one that worries each time he leaves in the morning - but I know it's bound to affect him, even if he keeps it inside, his usual style.

Hey, I am thrilled the outcome of the bouncing tire was not much, much worse. I had an identical experience many years ago, and there is simply no time to react - as with a deer in the road. Since the accident, I stopped enjoying driving. In fact, I became a nervous driver, a very defensive driver, and an annoying backseat driver. Knowing how lucky I was the tire didn't go through the windshield plays over and over. But like flying, driving is life, and so I do it. But without any joy. I'm writing this because your husband just might be affected, now or down the road. Bottomline now, though, is the car is broken, not him. And that's a good thing!

Hi Sherri,
So glad your husband is okay . . . and hopefully insurance will cover the car. These things are so frightening, but I am actually thankful for them, as they are reminders to each of us to treasure today what we have . . . as we never know what tomorrow brings. So happy he is okay!

Hugs & blessings,

Brenda

Whoa! That has to be on the top five most unbelievable but true accidents! I echo the 'bizarre' description! And it is a real blessing that he's okay, as well as the other driver!

You are truly blessed to have your hubby home safe with you. Makes the reality of how fragile our days can be a little closer to home I'm sure. Blessings to you as you now have all the messy insurance stuff to deal with. I empathize, really. I totaled a car two years ago and it's not fun. Hugs to your family

That is great that the other person called. Hopefully the insurance companies can help out to replace the car. I know that's not the first thing to worry about, but I know you guys need the car so he can get to work. *hugs* I am so glad Mike is okay!!!

Thank goodness your husband is all right. Sorry you lost your car though. I hope the police figure out what happened. I would hate to think their is some idiot throwing tires from the overpass.

Wow! Bizarre is the word for it. I'm glad your husband's ok, and the other guy too. I wouldn't want to be on either the giving end or the receiving end of a wheel flying off at highway speeds.
mikesgirl Posted - Nov 03 2008 : 12:09:00 PM
Thanks everyone for your good wishes - we just got a call from the State Patrol and the guy who's car the wheel came off of, actually called the State Patrol to let them know and see if it hit anyone. DH was going northbound at the time and this guy was going SOUTHBOUND believe it or not, when the wheel flew off and bounced over the median barrier and into dh! The car it came off of, was on the other side of the overpass, so the wheel rolled down the highway southbound, under the overpass, hit the median, bounced over it, and hit dh. Wow, what a shocker that must have been. Lucky noone else was hit. Weird thing - our car is totally demolished in the front end, but our air bags never deployed - makes you think you'd better not depend on them too much!! Thanks again sisters, for your well wishes -makes me feel so much better!!
