I cannot belive the prices of the magazines these days !!!
Romanitic house almost $7.00
and the Country Victorian
Also many others.
Do they think we can afford those prices?
Do they sell all of those magazines I see in the suppermarket and the Book store?
Well, I guess one thing for sure if they keep going up;
I will stop buying for sure.

Amen, ladies! My requirement to purchase a magazine used to be that it had to have at least two things of strong interest to me. Now, I pick and choose very carefully which ones I'll subscribe to, and if I buy it off the rack it has to be absolutely loaded with must have articles, patterns, recipes and ideas before I'll drop my $7 to purchase it! I hate it too, because I love sitting down (finally) in the evenings and pouring over my mags.

Does anyone have Half Priced Books bookstore near them? If so...I highly recommend it. You can get Family Circle, Country Living, Martha, and mannnnny more other magazines for like $1-2 each. They sell back issues for very reasonable and most are within the last year. I've gotten a lot of my magazines that way. A lot of times, we'll go to Barnes & Noble and read through the magazine and if there is something we can't live without...we'll buy it.

I have to say that I LOVE magazines- they are portable, timely and lend themselves to being shared...I subscribe to the ones that consistently save me money and give me great ideas. As an example, I don't buy many books anymore since I have the basics covered(I do use the heck out my library). I don't need to because I subscribe to MaryJane's Farm and Living Crafts. Between these two I always have good ideas for homemade gifts, recipes and stories that are great for my kids and I. Now- if I am interested in a particular Organic Gardening or People I have girlfriends who will swap with me and my mama always shares her Sunset mags...
So- if the prices of magazines are bumming you out subscribe to save money (usually 30-40%), support good publications and start a swap with some neighbors or girlfriends- it will give you an excuse to pop by or drop something in the mail;)

(In the interest of full disclosure I would never swap my MaryJane's Farm magazines, they are too precious! I just keep a list of family members that might enjoy a subscription for a birthday or holiday gift- they are the only magazine that I keep out on my cookbook shelf in the kitchen because they are used so often.)

I went into price shock when I looked at some of the Christmas Cookie Issues at the market yesterday! It used to be that a lot of magazines would have a special section and now they have a whole special issue for cookies and the prices are outrageous! Most of them were 10.00 or more! You could go buy a whole cookbook for that much!!!

I agree with all of you the prices are insane. I picked up a quilting mag yesterday at Joann's and did not pay attention to the price...12.95!!!!!!!!!! Luckily, she used a 40% off coupon...anyway there were no ads in it but really nothing all that interesting either. I am going to the recycling center and get the donated mags from now on.

I got rid of many of my subscriptions when they ran out. Now I choose only bargain priced ones and I got a couple as gifts from family. I renew the ones I like best buy wait until they offer two years for the price of one.. Never buy at the grocerystore counter..

Kay, I bought one of those recipe small magazines and you and I can think of recipes like this on our own...good choice on your part. I won't be buying another one, that's for sure.
I'm going to try the local library and see what I can find. Our local yarn store has Interweave Knits and Spin Off...I can really look through them at the store to see if they are worth purchasing and if so, I will. I do pay newsstand price but I like to support this store and again only purchase if I think I will use it for patterns and ideas. I find I get a bit lazy when I subscribe to a magazine...I get too many to really try out the projects so buying them just once in a while is better for me.

I'm a magazine addict! But I don't buy them anymore because they are too expensive. I only subscribe to MJ's and get the others from the library or used from friends. If you have a Joann's near you then you can use your 40% off on magazines. Sometimes I do that if there is a special one I want. I was at the grocery last night and saw one of those little recipe magazines featuring crockpot recipes. I thought about getting it until I saw the price - $4.99! I put it back.

Not as much information as there use to be.

I hardly buy magazines anymore, they cost as much as books! The Barnes and Noble and Borders bookstores rarely allow you to use coupons for "periodicals". So I try to glance at the pictures as I have a quick cup of coffee with my very active 5 year old son when I go to one of them.

I feel the same way Jami does--ADS ADS ADS. I subscribed to Better Homes and Gardens because a little girl at church was selling subscriptions for a school project. I am really disappointed in the actual amount of information. I spend the first couple of minutes tearing out those inserted cards (a pet-peeve of mine). Then I begin to look at the pictures. There are so few articles any more. I think I will follow Tammy's example and look them up online.

I donate magazines to our local Jr League thrift -- and pick up others there for 25 cents each.
In the past, I would subscribe to Country Living or Country Home when there was a good offer (12 for $12), but now my neighbor is a subscriber and passes her old copies on to me. Although that means I'm usually looking at Christmas in July or spring issues in the fall! She also passes Midwest Living on to me -- wonderful photos, recipes, places to visit. And after I'm done with them, off to the thrift with those as well.
Rarely do I buy single issue copies -- with the exception of some Somerset Studio magazines. Seems I'm so taken with Artful Blogging that I buy each new one that comes out.

Am I crazy, or has the price of "Victoria" magazine (recently re-published after being out of circulation for a few years) REALLY $7.00??? It USED to only be $3.99!!!! If that IS the case, then I'm scratching it off MY list! I will continue to buy "Country Living" (only #3.99) and "Country Home" ($4.95) and a few others, and of course, I will still buy MaryJanes Farm--- No matter HOW much it costs. I just LOVE that one!

I used to get a lot of magazines at the thrift store. There was one subscriber who always donated their Country and Country Living magazines about 2 weeks after they were on the rack in the stores.
And I got them for 10 to 25 cents.

I never thought about that Deb. I'll have to check out my local library. I mostly go for the recipes and crafts in the magazine. Seems like each one has it's own "miracle diets" on the front covers now, though. I blow past that part and onto the recipes of the good stuff...lol

We have 3 libraries near us. I have found many magazines that cost me between .10 - $1.00 each. I like to splurge on a few when I'm there. Sometimes I even get the current issue! These are donations from patrons and the $ goes to help the library.

I think it's always a shame when I see a pretty glossy cover and teasers on the cover, then you open it up and it's mostly ads from one end to the other. Just what you want to pay $7 for...a big ad for stuff you don't need or can't afford. I started subscribing to a bunch of sewing magazines this year thinking it would be fun. I'm going to let them expire as now I have enough ideas to last me quite a long time.

There are some that I don't mind paying more for like Interweave Knits because they always have so many patterns, but I generally only pick them up when there are quite a few patterns that I like. I once paid 7.00 for a Victorian magazine because it had a picture of this vintage bed and folding screen! It was one of those Oh my gosh, this is exactly what I want moments and was not going to pass up that picture!
I will say be very careful if you order magazines online! I ordered a subscription for my husband back in March and it still hasn't started! I have even filed a complaint with the attorney general! I ordered it through net magazines! Call the magazine company first and see if the place you are ordering through is an authorized dealer. They will usually have a list of legitimate sellers! Please don't buy from net magazines! I am still out 67.00 and I have tried many times to contact them! Sorry to rant, I just don't like to be ripped off and I don't want it to happen to anyone else!

Yesterday started out foggy, then the sun came out, then it started to rain really hard so I decided after my errands my daughter and I deserved a magazine. They are so espensive and most of my favorites have disappeared over the years. I did get one holiday decorating one with lots of ideas for Halloween,
Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's fun to look at all the great pictures and projects, I might even do one, you never know!
But I agree, they are very expensive by the issue, I do send free subscriptions to two friends, of Country living and Country Home.

When I was able to buy USA mags here, eons ago, I had to pay double the cover price due to import etc! A lot of money but I figured: I don't drink, I don't smoke (then), I don't go to pubs etc. SO that was my only extravaganza!
Now they are not here anymore, nowhere, so can't buy them, BUT if I could I still would buy one or two lol :)
Love them too much and keep them all, read them over and over again and took many ideas from them. Love to curl up with hot chocolate, (a sigaret) and my fave mag, heaven for me :0)

if you subscribe it is a whole lot cheaper. i've gotten mag subscriptions for $8.00/year and some send you a form in the mail that if you renew, you can send an additional subscription to a friend for FREE! (good christmas gift?) i agree that it does get expensive if you order a lot, but i look at it as this is my entertainment and if i can keep the price of the actual individual magazine to less than $l.00, it's not sooo bad. |

I stopped buying many of the magazines I used to get. I can get the same articles online for free. I agree - I looked at a Woman's Day Halloween issue and it was 6.00!! No thanks, I can go on BHG.com and find tons of crafts for free.
