had such a fun time visiting a friend's 'primitive antiques and craft shoppe' yesterday ... bunches of us showed up in our 'jammies' .. and there was a prize for the 'most outlandish' p.j.'s .. and i LOVED that a woman in her 70's won!!!!! she came looking like Santa Claus in his long johns!!!! everyone brought 'yummies' to share .. and we played such fun games (just like being a teenager again .. only we didn't curl each other's hair or pierce anyone's ears ... or any other parts of their anatomy!)

lots of giggles and story telling too. it was so wonderful just sitting and listening to two women who were born and raised on a farm talk about their lives and how it used to be' .. and opinions of how the world is changing ... and they felt that was sad. i didn't totally agree with everything they said .. but just soaked up their passion for the good olde days.

had about a two hour drive to reach my destination .. one of those little towns where literally, if you blink, you've missed it! stopped at some fun antiques shoppes on my way ... gathered a few treasures .. and bought some wonderful 'hand-painted' and 'hand-embroidered' primitive signs (they are still in my van .. will unpack them tomorrow and let you all know what they say .. my friend, 'twigs' .. made up the cutest sayings for both the laundry room and the bathroom .. and i just had to have them! got lots of those yummy-smelling 'soy candles' too!

slept at twig's 'unheated' farm house in front of a 'fireplace' and it was delightful .. all snuggled up in quilts and comforters! we stayed up half the night just talking and talking and talking!

up bright and early this morning and down the road to an olde general store/diner for a big 'farmer's breakfast' of eggs and ham and bacon and grits and biscuits and gravy and strong, hot coffee!

then .. oh my .. what an adventure i did have! there are ten amish families on farms nearby .. and twigs has some of them doing some of her stitcheries, adding rooms onto her cute country shoppe, helping her clean house and watching her kids!

they made sourdough bread, apple, cherry and pecan pies, banana roll bread and cookies and fudge to sell at twigs' shoppe today! (i got some of everything they baked for our 'antiques shoppe holiday open house tomorrow' in town.)

soooooooo .. twigs took me to their home .. first time i've ever been inside of an amish home! what a precious sight .. 4 little amish girls and one brother shyly greeted me .. and one of the younger women had a 4 month old baby daughter dressed in a teeeeensy little amish dress and bonnet. ot to hold and snuggle her ... she looked and felt like one of those chubby little cherubs in a renaissance painting .. and such a sweet demeanor.

now ya'll know by now .. how i love to ask questions .. and oh boy .. did i ever! one of the young girls (probably about 16 or 17 rode back to the shoppe with us .. and shared so many things with me! i asked her .."with only ten families in this part of kentucky, how do you meet and 'court' .. other young amish men and women with the prospect of marriage?". she said that they have 'drivers' that they hire who take them to other amish communities in kentucky and also in indiana and ohio. she said that one of the girls i had just met .. was a 'friend' of her brother's visiting their home from ohio .. for 'courting'. she told me that the amish are moving to more rural areas of states because in the large amish communities .. property values were so high and there were so many new families that needed land. i don't know why .. but i was surprized that she really didn't know very much about the 'shakers'history or mennonites .. and their differences from the amish.

i was VERY surprized at the interior of this home. i guess i thought it would be more 'shakerish' in it's simplicity .. but it was actually furnished in what appeared to be 'walmart' furniture and accessories. (i do see them all the time shopping at the walmart in a town 20 miles from Cabin Creek Farm). (i'm always slyly peeking into their baskets to see what they buy!)

antiqued my way home again .. getting lots and lots of 'books' .. oh lordy! i do love books! bought about 20 of them. a couple for honey hunk a few for me .. and lots for my grandchildren!

have any of you girls had experiences with amish families? would love to hear your stories!

xo, frannie

kentucky farmgirls .. and everyone else who wants to travel to this wonderous state ... count on a 'springtime' gathering of farmgirls here at cabin creek farm! in the cabins, we only have three guest beds all snuggled together in the 'stranger room' .. but ha! that didn't stop twigs from bringing a buncha' gurlfrenz here (during a TORNADO i might add!) we were going to put up 'cots' in the lower cabin .. but the lights went out (and the tornado hit right up the hill and took out about 40 some trees .. but never dipped down into this little valley!) we DID hear the winds though! .. so some of us ended up sleeping on the floor! i do have a king size bed we can skoosh a buncha' girls in .. (yes! i'll send honey hunk on a back-packing trip) during our git-together! and there is a big 'ole hammock out in the yard! we ARE planning on getting one of those wonderful 'outdoor tent' thingies with the wooden floor .. but probably not by springtime .. more a summer thing i think. we do have two porches (one is screened in) and t'other will have a tin roof on it come springtime .. and it is reeeeeeeel BIG .. so .. we can bring cots and sleeping bags and camp out on the porches too! have a TENT we can pitch in the woods if some of you girls are so inclined. oh .. there is a wonderful pine tree forest where we could put the tent for a few of you!

we'll each take on a 'meal' to prepare (from maryjane's pantry!) and we'll do some antiquing .. and hiking .. and crafting (twigs and i will conjure up some fun projects to do .. and get the 'kits' together for them) she designs wonderful 'stitcheries'!
maybe about the merry month of "MAY" for our gathering ... cuz' the weather will be divine here at that time. if you think you might be able to come join us ... let me know .. so, i can kinda' start planning things!

if you want to mapquest cabin creek .. look for Abraham Lincoln's Birth Cabin in Hodgenville, KY .. we are ten miles away from there .. on Route 61 South. Cabin Creek Farm is not located in any town ... doesn't even have a name for our area on the map! Mailing address is Mt. Sherman .. but that is two towns and one county away! This will be grande fun! xo, frannie

farmgirls .. twigs knows how to gather girlfriends for a great giggly time! we played games and had prizes .. and twigs (about once a year) has women visit her for a week or so (usually several come from england too!) she takes them all over for fun shopping sprees and they sit and sew .. and visit the most wonderful kentuky backroads! next spring .. i think we kentucky (and neighboring states) farmgirls should think about maybe forming a group to meet every couple months and do fun stuff and get maryjane and her products known widely throughout our states! think upon it and we'll yak about it more after the holidays. xo, frannie

p.s. (oh pshaw! thanks for the sweet words miz debbie).

I have a great stitched sign in my house that mu Mom stitched. It had a lady stitching a quilt and it says "My house was clean yesterday, sorry you missed it" I think it's funny. I love the bathroom rules and laundry list. If only I had a laundry room.

Hi, Frannie! My grandmother was Amish, but left to marry my grandfather. Sometimes when I look at the course of her life, I wonder if she regretted it. She was originally from northern Indiana, moved to Alabama, and when she left my grandfather she moved back to Indiana and remarried. I have several aunts in that area. Of course, growing up there too, I had lots of Amish foods and spent a lot of time in Shipshewana before it was so touristy. It's very nice there, though.

I'm not one for signs about the house, but I do have a couple. One is a little sign that says "A home without a dog is just a house." Of course I have dogs! And the other one is hand stitched and says "Housework Makes You Ugly." You'd think to look at me I've done more than my share, but it's my way of rationalizing staying out of the house and being out in the barn!

I'm glad you had such a fun girl time. We deserve that from time to time, don't we?

That is exactly my line to my husband when I want to buy something and he says "Oh, Jenny! I can MAKE that!!" I always say "But WILL you?" it usually works...that is such a great idea to put it in a shop!!
That really good friend saying is adorable too...I love sayings like that.
My sis in law made an embroidered pillow for my husband that says " I smile because you are my brother, I laugh because there is NOTHING you can do about it!"....that one is perfect for me to make for MY brother too..and he will be getting a pillow embroidered with that same thing on his birthday in March!!

LINEN: you can get new linen at most 'quality' fabric stores .. but .. oh do haunt antiques shoppes (or ask friends and family) for olde linen .. it just has a great 'feel' to it .. probably all the 'stories' it holds.

had to laugh .. cuz' i think we all 'pass something up' with the thought: "I can make that!" .. well, Twigs (my friend who owns the country shoppe) has a big sign posted that says: "Yes, you CAN make it .. but WILL you?" she said women look at it and smile and then usually BUY whatever it is that they 'can' make!

i have a little notebook that travels everywhere with me .. if i see a sign or saying that just grabs my heart .. i write it down .. i NEVER do it in the presence of the owner or customers .. sometimes i say a few lines to myself .. go out of the shoppe .. write them down .. and come back for the next line or two! it reeeeeeely isn't 'cool' to stand there and copy the design of something that someone has for sale in a shoppe and i do avoid that! just not fair to the shop-owner. xo, frannie

p.s. i have heard the 'really good friend' saying .. and love it!
cajungal Posted - Nov 20 2005 : 4:28:03 PM
Frannie,
What a trip! So proud of you for buying the "sayings". I always look at hangin' signs, samplers, and such and think to myself..."Aw, I can make that" I don't buy them and end up forgetting everything they said. And end up with nothing cause I don't make them. We have a favorite restaurant that has stuff hangin' all over the walls and we spend more time reading and laughing than eating. Everytime we're there I tell myself to make signs when I get home. Still none.

There is one sayin' sign that I truly want to make and I actually remember what it says....... "A good friend will come get you out of jail. A really good friend will be sitting next to you saying, Boy, that was fun!" That might make a good signature line.

Blessings!
Catherine

Thank you for sharing your adventure with us. I could "see" the women and then the Amish home..

Sounds like you had a great time and picked up some great treasures - I saw embroidered sayings like that at a cabin in which we stayed a couple of years ago. I've thought about buying some linen to stich some myself - where could I buy linen for this - Haven't seen it at Hobby Lobby, except in kits. Maybe that would be OK, just stich what I want and not necessarily follow the pattern insert?
CabinCreek-Kentucky Posted - Nov 20 2005 : 08:16:54 AM
morning time: emtied the van of all my treasures .. .and before i hang these in (1) my bathroom and (2) my laundry room .. i wanted to share these cute 'rules': (these stitcheries are on olde stained linen .. and stitched in a 'child-like scrawl' in black thread .. and framed in 'shabby chic black wooden frames').

OUTHOUSE RULES

* pick yore own leaves
* take deep breath or use clothes pin for nose
* strike matches at own risk
* hole is deeper than appears
* sit still cuz' squirming causes splinters
* close door to keep chickens out

ha! does any of that bring back memories?

now the one that sez:

LAUNDRY WASHIN HOW TO

1 . collect rain water in wash tubs
1 tub for washin,
1 tub for wrenchin
2 . put lie soap in water
3 . sort laundry in piles
1 pile things of white
1 pile of colored
1 pile of breeches and rugs
4 . scrub dirty clothes on wash board
5 . wrench 'em real good
broom stick handle works best
6 . hang clothes out to dry
7 . scrub porch with wash water
8 . water flours with wrench water

Also got one with one of my most favorite sayings:
"Home is where your stories begin"

and two more sweet ones:

"Enter with a Joyful Heart"

and one for the 'stranger room" "Thanks for the Memories"

Have a grande sunday farmgirls! xo, frannie

Frannie, thank you for sharing about the Amish family you visited. My mother's immediate family are Mennonites (last name Schlabach) and if we keep going on the family tree, Amish. My great uncle (Mennonite) who passed away a few years ago use to take a yearly trip to visit the Amish relatives. I really miss hearing about his trips.
