OOh - Dyersville is also where they filmed Field of Dreams. People can go to the actual field and play baseball there.

Another website is WQAD.com That is our local news station - like I said, we are on the boarder of Ill and Iowa so they cover both sides of the river. Some big news lately has been major flooding this summer and a tornado that hit a boy scout camp on the west side of Iowa and killed several boys. It was very tragic but there were a lot of very heroic stories that came from that also. They just cut the ribbon on the rebuilt camp a couple of weeks ago. (Good midwest values story of the state coming together to help rebuild.)

I am not from Iowa but am less than an hour East. My hubby actually works in Iowa - John Deere. Perhaps she could check out info on the net about the Iowa state fair - they are very proud of their butter cow!!! Ha! Maybe she could make her own miniture butter cow to serve with cornbread!!! Also - corn, corn, more corn and John Deere. John Deere is actually an Illinois company but has many offices and factories in Iowa as well. Check out Waterloo - I know there is something special out the JD tractors made there but I don't even know what they are.

Raises hand and says I was born in Grinnell, Iowa and lived within 30 miles of my place of birth for 30 yrs of my life before moving to Wisconsin in 1987. My parents and sibs all still live in Iowa and I go back often for visits. I spent 2 months there this past summer with my mom after she was diagnosed with cancer. Maybe I could help? Let me know and I'll see what I can dig up that might be of interest.

What a WONDERFUL project!!! Something to think of....Waterloo, Iowa is home of one of the John Deere tractor factories - the main one is over in Moline, Illinois.

I think it is in Iowa where you can find the Bridges of Madison County. It seems like I remember hearing that the National Toy Farm Machinery Show is in Dyersville, Iowa.

I haven't lived in Iowa, but I've been there a few times in the past. Another idea is to perhaps try to find one of those quarters of Iowa featured. I think this project is definitely a great learning experience. I hope that she does find the information she needs.

If there are any kiddos that need help with Kentucky, I'll be more than happy to share some stuff.

Aunt Jenny Posted - Oct 20 2008 : 10:51:40 PM
I just know there will be some farmgirl help with this. When two of my kids had state reports for New Jersey and Arizona I had farmgirls send wonderful info (brochures, postcards and like that ) to use on the display boards..and they were excited to correspond with someone who lives in the state. When my oldest daughter did her "country" report in 6th grade on new Zealand a sweet farmgirl sent an amazing amount of info, pictures and fun stuff.
Do the kids at your daughter's school usually bring something that is a product important to the state to pass out to the class? (such as my oldest daughter had Washington state and passed out apples to each child, and the one who did New Jersey passed out mini blueberry muffins, since blueberries were a product grown there) They had alot of fun with that. Youngest son had Utah for his state last year (he was thrilled since we live here..but I wondered why it was even in the "bowl" they chose from) and he took green jello "jigglers" since Utah uses more green jello that any other state. None of my kids have had Iowa. They really enjoyed the State reports..and just think ..next year she will have a country report I bet!
Have fun!!!!

Oh My Goodness Sunshine....It was Definately not my intent to make you feel the way you must be feeling about my post from your response. I do apologize if you thought I was being anything more than trying to be helpful. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned in the past....the internet does not allow us to show emotion or intonation and I am very sorry for the way you took my thoughts. As a retired teacher I was just trying to be helpful, but I can see that I have upset you. I will know better than to ever try to contribute to a topic regarding school things ever again. And as I said, I do apologize for what you Thought I was saying and hope you will accept my apology.

Until Later,

ok to answer your questions

question: Sunshine...how old is your oldest daughter?

answer: 5th grade

question:Perhaps part of the learning on this is for the children to write letters, seek out information, stretch their thinking skills by figuring out to who and where they should send off for such information from the state as well as personal insights from friends in the state.

answer:She has written letters to the governor and things of that sort.

answer:She asked if we could post this on the forum so she could get the perspective of people that live in the state not just people who get paid ( government officials) to promote the state

question:Was she to do any type of display board on the State?

answer:yes she will do a display board

question:Did the teacher have conversation with the class about obtaining information?

answer:yes and this was agreed to ( posting here on this forum)

question:I do understand your wanting to obtain this info for her but if she is in one of the upper elementary grades perhaps the learning objective is more than just obtaining the info, it probably is teaching them a process as well.

answer:i am not obtaining the information for her I am typing on a forum of people who are helpful and will send letters to her with information ( not to me) and she will respond to them. She is a minor and I do not allow her to be on forums like this yet so I posted.

question:Did she select the State to report on or was the State assigned to her? Was Iowa of particular interest to her and if so why did she select the State?

answer:it was assigned she had no choice in it at all she wanted California or Nevada because we have family in those states

questions: just a few questions to explore with her perhaps

answer: I think I know my kids homework assignment very well she is not cheating in any way nor is this bending the rules it isn't your class so I am sure it has differnt things then when you taught it in yours.

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

Sunshine...how old is your oldest daughter? I was a teacher for many, many years and did many units over the years on the United States with my elementary students (I also taught mid-school children)but the US units were with my elementary students. Perhaps part of the learning on this is for the children to write letters, seek out information, stretch their thinking skills by figuring out to who and where they should send off for such information from the state as well as personal insights from friends in the state. Was she to do any type of display board on the State? Did the teacher have conversation with the class about obtaining information? If your child is in the preschool, kindergarten age....I do understand your wanting to obtain this info for her but if she is in one of the upper elementary grades perhaps the learning objective is more than just obtaining the info, it probably is teaching them a process as well. Did she select the State to report on or was the State assigned to her? Was Iowa of particular interest to her and if so why did she select the State? Just a few questions to explore with her perhaps.
