Hey Jamie,
Didn't know what age you were!!!! YOu go girl....
I think as long as each of us continue learning and teach what we are learning to our kiddos, than there will be improvement.

So here is to farmgirls learning from the mistakes around us and being honest with our own finaces, we can start there.
If it won't start from the top down, we shall do it from the bottom up. Shoot that sounded kinda bad, hope you all know what I mean.

The challenge for me is watching all those people who have money markets and other investements and these are there retirements...Ughhh, no fun at all.

I wrote too to my Senator and he voted no twice...good boy.

Miss Wilma...you're like me, I am a realist and it means I'm always taking stock in the situation, but I'm lucky to have an optimist bent to me...so I am always trying to make good of the situation and find a solution or find some peace in it if I can't get it fixed. I have to laugh daily or I just cannot stand myself.

Carol Sue, I am right behind you in age and am still learning new things each and every day...think we'd be pretty bored if we knew it all, don't you? Money is one of those things in life that teaches a hard lesson usually from a self-inflicted wound! But don't we just pick ourselves up and brush ourselves off and start again. No time like this moment to get something new and better going for ourselves.

I wrote to my reps to vote NO on the first Paulson proposal. Since the amended measure was passed regardless of many citizen's requests, I will hope/pray fervently that the bailout will at least let the economy down gracefully, instead of with a mighty crash. I don't believe the bailout will cure the markets, however, for too many reasons to list here. Be well, everyone.

You girls chatting has made me think about the choices I make.
No don't have credit cards, cause we don't make enough bucks. Maybe that has been a good thing in the long run.
I think we each have to deal with our own hearts and lives and be honest. Can we really afford the lifestyle that we live. That question has made me think. Neither a borrower or a lender be was my folks motto, and it sure worked for them.
Now I have to say, I wish I had been a better saver, and have had to deal with myself in that perspective. We need to have a savings account. So that needs to begin again for this household.
Every penny counts is true. It means being more aware of where every penny is going. I may be almost 52 but I can always learn and take stock.

Jami I am a serious woman but love laughing to. Around here things are serious we dont live in a dream world, I am very serious when it comes to my neighbors struggling, I do worry about our young peoples futures, I cant turn the other way when I see a best friend have to sell all their cattle because they cant buy hay for the winter. But just maybe I can think of something to make her laugh so the pain of it is better. I am thinking of recommending she take up preaching as one old feller said here it sure beats farming HA

Girls the most of us that I have met and talked to on here are very self sufficent. The ladies I have met are the very best of parents.I feel sorry for anyone that has worked and tried losing their homes but when I think back thru the years how we did with out the finer things so we could have our dream farm. We worked and earned our way.We have never had any goverment help and dont want it now just let me take care of myself. When I had so many surgeries I had some try to get me to get disability and that is good if one really needs it but I could still work at something so I would not lie to get a ck.We do not spend our money for expensive restruants or all the other high living things. We have the best of food right here at home, and a good book or fishing pole makes me happy, shucks fishing dont cost me much because I can still dig worms and I love going dipping in the creeks for minnows. You know this dont make sense to me I have a good friend that built a new house 20 years ago, they are the same age as we are , well they have lived high on the hog now 20 years later with borrowing against their home they owe over 200,000 on a house that only cost 90,000. Now they are trying to sell it and cant. In my opinion having a roof over my head is the most important tning . I had rather live in a two room shack than to have something I couldnt pay for.I am so thankful I was raised to be able to survive on my own. The very worst thing I could imagine if Sterl goes before I do is to have to marry an old slobber face man to take care of me. You know there are some women that couldnt get in out of the dark by them selves but not us farm girls

Oh I have pounded into both kids that you save and pay cash for just about everything. I told them to NEVER get a credit card. They are way too tempting, and if you use it, you probably didn't really "need" what you purchased.

I hope they listened.
Both were amazed I don't have one.

Rene's post about being more proactive and creative and the fox watching the hen house was exactly what I was thinking.

I can't say I disagree with anything anyone has said because we are on the whole "like minds" here on this forum. I am with you AnneMarie...paper or plastic...go with paper! And I don't mean the grocery store choices either.

I'm from Canada so we're going feeling this as well. Unfortunatley people in North America in general have been spending money like teenagers with a platnium card and now are feeling the consequences. Money was lent to people who could barely afford it (yes that happened here too).

Is a bailout a good thing, not really. I agree it's like being an enabling parent. The ones who are going to get out with out consequences are the corporations and their CEOs, the ones stuck with the tab, the middle class who are already strained to begin with.

I agree with Jami that the siliver lining is to begin taking care of your own and be good to your neighbour.

But I think as individuals we have to take resoponsibility for our "stuffitis" and not having the paitience to save and pay cash instead of the credit mentality of have it this second and pay for it later.

This is also a good opportunity for all of us adults to teach our children about the importance of a "need" vs. a "want" and that if you want something to save for it and pay cash instead of getting it on credit.

Rene,
I so agree. Being pro-active is such a good direction. We need to learn to become more independent. Our country originally was formed for the sake of freedom and yet so much of our freedom has been given to voices in the government who are not echoing our thoughts or desires by any means. I think our best defense is to learn to stand on our own two feet and to help those around us to do the same. Kind of like helping the starving in third world countries. While bringing them food is great, how much better to bring them the seed and ability to grow their own for generations to come. So many of our younger generations have no knowledge of how to garden, cook, live frugally or even balance a check book. It is up to us to help lead the way for ourselves and the generations to come. Farmgirls unite!

Hugs & blessings,

Brenda

Jami, my broker even used the word GREED. He has my IRA invested very conservatively, but all in all it has still lost a bundle. I'm retired and I'm still paying on my mortgage. That is the part that hurts the most. I certainly hope that something can be done about "universal" health care so that ALL folks can be cared for and so we wouldn't have to have fund drives to help others pay their medical bills.

Thanks for your response.

I agree, Rene. I certainly have found myself much more resourceful of late and this forum has been a big boost for me in getting "there." I am relying more on making do or doing without and going homegrown in all aspects of life. I've always been that way to a point but now sure am aggressively seeking out more repurposing and making my own stuff and relying on outside sources less. It's actually a very freeing way of life, as you all know already!
So, I guess there is a silver lining in this financial cloud and it's to take care of your own and be good to your neighbor...that's enough.

Jami I hope for that to, Its so hard that we work our lives away and it handled so carelessly.Rene I am like you, we are cutting back big time . Food is no problem here but I worry about my children, I keep cautioning them but and hope they listen. If I had it to do over I would never have had the insurance we would have been so much better off putting it in savings. Maybe those coyotes better stay in Washington because we shoot them around here

If you have noticed our "Queen Bee's" tag line it says "Recession is capitalism's way of getting you to grow a garden".... I love that! This whole financial "mess" has really made me want to be more proactive... save more (although I have to tell you I back to wanting to stuff it under my mattress), Grown my own food and plant more and more fruit and nut trees...and shop local. I love the idea that my $$$ goes to helping my neighbor and not some Corporate Giant. I am sewing more, repurposing more, and being more creative and productive.. So in the big scope of things, for the things we can change, lets change... which by the way means voting as well. I refuse to be a victim ~ to me it isn’t the farmgirl way~

Miss Wilma~ the health insurance thing makes me nuts ~ Even with the high policy payments, you get very little in "care" for the $$$ spent and this is certainly an area that we need to "fix". Of course there is something to be said for finding the local Doc and trading free range chicken eggs and other home made yummies for a Doctor's visit.....

But the whole thing smacks of "having the coyotes watch the hen house" to me~

Betty, that greed monster is an ugly one but sure seems to be running the show, doesn't it?
To answer your question, Miss Wilma, I think the bailout is going to be helpful to Wall Street and the big banks...benefiting big business/investors and CEO's there and I'm hoping it will help my 401K come up out of the toilet eventually so I can contemplate retiring someday but I just am not sure if this will happen.

I agree with everyone to, I have hard enough time trying to take care of of my own money let enough having to take care of everyone else, Just about the time you think you can see a little light some one finds a way to spend it for you. I think one of the past post was to devy the bailout amongst the taxpayers, and let them spend it as it they thought best, well I sure would like that. You know it blows my mind how dumb the so called smart alecs are

I agree with everything everyone here has already said. If I bounce checks, who bails me out? Nobody! Why should we have different standards for companies that basically do the same thing?
lisamarie508 Posted - Oct 15 2008 : 05:20:22 AM
Brenda, that was my thought exactly. Like bailing your kid out of jail, paying all the fines and fees for them and what have they learned? Responsibility? No. Accountability? No. What NOT to do in the future? No. Why learn anything?...mom and dad will fix it. We've just created a big selfish, spoiled brat!

I think GREED is driving the whole thing. If it weren't for folks trying to have more than they could afford, I don't think we would be where we are in this mess.

The rich will get richer and the poor or the middle class will end up paying for it.

That's my thoughts and I'm sticking to them.
