I heard today in church that a full apple tree means we will have a hard winter.
I just thought my trees were making up for last year, not having any. They were all so full, the branches were touching the ground. Even pear trees are full.
So has anyone got sayings they've heard all their lives about the coming fall? winter? about how it will be? I'm sure different areas have different sayings, too.

Belle, I'll be interested in hearing about those seed patterns. That is very cool...here it is usually something about how wooly the caterpillars are, but I haven't noticed any caterpillars, so they are no help! If my oak trees had acorns the squirrels have already gotten them all...

There is a saying about percimin seeds. If you break open the seed there will be a shape of a knife, fork or spoon. I have done this and sure enough there is the little dark shape of knife, fork or spoon. Unfortuantely, I cannot remember what each one means. Like wet, cold, dry, warm. I'll see if I can find out from someone. Can't ask an old timmer. That would be me. I can go to the woods and find some percimins and look in the seed. I'll get back to ya. |

OOOhhh, I sure wish I could come get ya"lls acorns for my pigs. I have a few oaks, but haven't noticed the acorns yet. Maybe the squirrels are busy.
And I did see an all black wooly worm in the grass yesterday.

Our acorn trees are loaded and drop them like flies. So we might have a cold winter too, who knows. Will see

Our Apple trees were sooo loaded, I wonder wht winter holds for us too?, and not only winter, but, the future, with our country in such a turmoil?

I've heard that an all black wooly worm (catepillar) means a hard winter.
So far our wooly worms have been liars.
I haven't seen an all black wooly worm this year. I've only seen all brown ones.
My friend told me that the farmer's almanac says we're in for a harsh winter this year.
I don't know, we'll see.

I've heard something about acorns and hard winters
There's an oak tree that has covered a part of the road w/ a TON of acorns. The trees are so full you can hear acorns drop through the leaves all the time
Haven't read the Farmer's Alamanac this year, but have heard it's supposed to be very cold.
Hopefully NC won't get any snow

If the bees and wasps build their nests low to the ground there will be little or no snow. I ran into a few near the ground this year. I never heard the one about the apple trees, but all the ones in town were just loaded this year. If you've seen my blog, it appears that winter has arrived early. We have yet to see just how hard it will be!
