Anyone else using this beautiful weather to get outside and do some painting? I'm back at it since it has cooled of down here. It was too hot this summer but the weather is just right now!
Check out my blog for pics of the latest projects.

My front door is 30 years old. We have lived here for 6 years. I'm not sure if the stain had varnish or shellac on it. The foyer had a big leak that ran down the door inside & out, so the wood is quite warped. I was told by our handyman that it would have to be painted because of that. I would really prefer to stain it. This will be next springs project for me. Thanks for all of the information. Good luck to everyone on their projects. I just finished painting my front park bench "Mayflower Blue" it looks adorable & really pops up there on the front deck.

That door looks lovely. I'm working like a beaver, trying to get my house painting finished up before winter. If we can only get a few more sunny weekends this fall... We had the second and third stories painted by a professional crew, and we've been working on the bottom half off and on all summer. Only parts of the porches and the window trim left to finish!

Dawn is your door sealed with varnish or shellac? I don't see why you couldn't re-stain it? If it is sealed you might have to sand it down a bit but if it is stained you should be able to. In fact don't sand if you want to keep the look you have just take stripper to it to remove the varnish/shellac and then clean it good to make sure that the stripper is off and it is good and dry and then you should be able to stain over it again. Does any of that make sense? The stripper will not remove the stain just the varnish.

I love the color of your front door. Do you know by chance how to make paint look like stain on a door? I saw them do it on HGTV, but forgot which show it was on. My front door is stained, but it's so old that I was told stain won't work anymore. I'd like to keep the look, but will have to use paint.

Beautiful paint job, Sandra! You're a woman after my own heart! I'll be installing some rolled insulation this weekend. I'd rather be painting. Wish you could have been at Wilma's workshop last weekend. We painted birdhouses. I also painted a canoe shaped wall shelf. And this is THE perfect weather for oil based paint to dry. ;)
