I thought this would be a good topic.
I am all about saving time in all areas especially in farm chores. I've started noticing how much stuff I can carry to save time and steps. So I just thought it'd be fun to see how much other people carry around.
I'm sure all of ya'll with little ones have to carry them alot while doing chores, so that counts as a carry item.
I have the most things when it comes to milking anf feeding. So when I'm done with milking I have the full 2 gallon tote plus 2 milk bottle buckets, the milk pail and a cup of coffee to carry back to the kitchen. Then I carry the 2 milk buckets, a small bucket of water and either a gallon or half gallon jug of milk to put in the fridge in the milkroom. Not to mention all the doors and gates I have to get through.
Then there's feeding time with all the various feed buckets for all the different animals. So there's lots of juggling going on, too.
Anyway, I thought this would be fun. I like to watch Rachel Ray's show and she has contests sometimes to see how much people can carry at one time.
I do have a wagon for grain bags but it's too big and heavy to lug behind all the time. So that's all I use it for.

I 'carry' all my gardening tools, etc.. in a cart that I pull with my 4-wheeler. Now I garden in a big way (sell at farmers market), but I hate having to hike ten times up to the barn to get gardening gloves, or the 'other' hoe, or some fertilizer, or the tape to repair the dripline, etc.. I just pull it all around with me--all the time. Sounds kind of crazy now that I've typed it out, but makes my life so much easier!

BTW, have you ever gone to a junkyard that was having an "all you can carry" day? My husband used to frequent one in the Philly area where they did this a couple of times a year. You had to gather up all the auto parts you wanted and bring them to a check out booth, and if you could carry them from the head of the line to the check out booth (about 15 feet) you paid $50 for all of it. You could get another guy to help you, and if the two of you could carry the loot, it was $100. I'll never forget the day I saw these two Jamaican guys carry a whole engine across the line on a stretcher they improvised from an old car door. |

Carry while you have strong backs, girls! Oh how I wish I could carry stuff like I used to! The extra trips drive me crazy!
But I try to make each trip outside or upstairs count. I always think "what can I take in while I am out here?" "What can I put away upstairs while I am on my way up?"
Oh for the days when I had a child on one hip and still carried dishes, groceries, and diaper bags too!

Kelly, I've wondered that for years! I think it has to do with the whole multi-tasking thing! I'm sure they are out there but, I haven't met a man yet who could multi-task successfully.

Why is it that a woman can carry so much and still get in the house and a man can only carry one thing in and still need the door opened? It is amazing how much we can carry!

I can't tell you how many times THIS clumsy farmgirl has tripped (sometimes over nothing) when carrying too much stuff....gallon jars of milk, milk buckets, bags of udder rags, buckets of feed, water, fruit, weeds, etc....I love that I have 4 kids at home..they help alot..but I still don't have a wonderful way to carry too much stuff. I have learned to put things inside things and all that...but I still tend to carry too much trying to make less trips..haha.
I agree Teresa..we probably all have strong bones!!

ugh, let me put down my compost buck, four onions, a glass I found in the yard, the mail, some laundry off the line..........
LOL. My life is easy at this point because we don't have any livestock, but I hear you, I've done what you're doing! Not to mention bucking those hay and straw bales, hoisting those feed sacks, ummf. Well, one thing for certain, us farmgirls should have strong bones!
