Do any of you ladies have a barn quilt? Ours was installed on Thursday. Our local Extension Service and Arts Council have been working together to encourage people to bring this art back to life. There are beginning to be several in our area.

Thanks Frannie for the info. I know there will be a published list at some time in the near future. I don't blame you for wanting to protect your privacy. We live at the end of a 1/2 mile lane too. There is a circle drive in front of the hay shed that the quilt is on, so it will be easy for people to just drive by.

i have a friend who has one on her FRONT PORCH (she's not in kentucky). you can put them on any 'outbuilding' .. at least here in Green County! or a fence .. or whereever! IF you have a barn . .that is a great place for them to be.

we have one .. but no 'perfect' place on it for a 'quilt' .. sooo .. i'm thinkin' 'outside the barn'.

chris ... our Arts Council here in town has that list! i can get it for you if you wish. we just started this program .. and i think there are only about 8 finished so far. our 'official' list isn't out yet until we get more done.

honey .. you can get one on your barn if you want it! that is not a criteria .. we are a wonderfully 'relaxed' and fun group of gurlz .. and our goal is to get a barn quilt to everyone who wants one!

i'm having FOUR smaller ones done .. one for each SEASON. we have chosen to NOT be on the 'trail' though .. cuz' we are at the END of a road .. 1/2 mile off the 'main road' .. and really LOVE our privacy. will probably put ours on our 'TREE HOUSE'.

jus' let me know if you need more info. xoxo

Ada - Thanks for the info. I told a friend about it this weekend, and she's curious about it, too! Hope we can eventually do one on our barns!

Tina - if I can find the photo, I'll send it to you. I've seen some of the smaller versions of the barnquilts but they are put on fences. They are really neat to see.

There are several "trails" in Kentucky. Here are a few of them:

Madison County, KY (Richmond/Berea area)
http://ces.ca.uky.edu/madison/fcs/Quilt%20Trail.htm

A listing of various Kentucky Quilts...don't have Scott County....there are photos of individual quilts on this website:

Fleming County, KY Quilts w/photos & History
http://www.flemingbarnquilts.com/

Scott County, KY Quilts (PDF link)
http://ces.ca.uky.edu/scott/fcs/BARN%20QUILTS.pdf

KY Arts Council Link...with links to individual counties
http://artscouncil.ky.gov/QTrails/Story.htm

Here is one of the main website links, but it only has the eastern KY trail links:
http://www.kentuckyquilttrail.org/

I really wish they would have ALL of the quilts on there to make it easier.

I'm afraid my barn is Greensburg is not in the best of shape so I probably couldn't get one. Maybe when we get it fixed up some we could. Cathy and Ada Mae, any idea if there is a list of the addresses that have the barn quilts? I would love to get pictures of all of them when i come up next time.

Ada Mae - I simply love your barn quilt - it is so pretty and fits your place perfectly. I can't hardly wait to get mine - should be finished next week sometime. I'm so grateful to our Arts Council for heading up this committee - gonna get a lot of people traveling through our wonderful lil' town I think. My pattern is called the "Christmas Star" - I'll share with you all when it is hung on the barn!

Congrats - Miss Ada Mae - looks BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I adore barn quilts and have always wanted to do one on my barn. Minor issue . . . I don't have a barn! LOL! So someday, when I finally get my farm I have been dreaming of, I will paint my own. I love classic star patterns, such as the Ohio Star, so probably something like that. I also love flags and patriotic decor painted on barns.

Your barn quilt is wonderful!

Brenda

I think a quilt block painted on the wall would look terrific. Wouldn't it look nice as a border in a bedroom? Of course that would take a while to paint, unless you could make a stencil--which I have never tried to do. Good luck with whatever you try.

Thanks Karin--I sure hope I see you coming down our road soon (that would mean lower gas prices). I really don't see that happening, although oil prices are way down. What's the deal!!!
I have visited your blog and left a couple of comments.

Jessica, Thanks for your color comment. I am a red/white/and blue fan. I remember now reading about the quilts starting in Ohio. We had to put ours on a new hay shed we had built. Our oldest tobacco barn was blown down by a tornado several years ago. The other barns we have were not turned in such a way as to have a good display area.
I hope many more people get interested in them. I would like to see advertisements painted on them as well (SEE ROCK CITY) (SEE RUBY FALLS)--remember them!!!!

I love the colors in your quilt! I've worked with several of the groups up here for the last few years in promoting the barn quilts. I have the instructions on how to do them if anyone ever needs them. It talks about what paint to get, how to do it, etc. It went from being the Appalachian Region to trickling down to other states beyond. It started up in Ohio a few years ago. It has really helped bring "notice" to old tobacco barns and our agriculture heritage & quilting heritage in our area.

Julie, Evidentally this is something farmers did years ago. I can remember seeing signs and advertisements painted on barns as well. Our local Cooperative Extension Service and the Arts Council have been working together to revive this lost art. It consists of 2 4' x 8' sheets of outside plyboard. The barn owner gets to choose their pattern and the Arts Council will paint it for you. Our local RECC came and installed it. There will be a directory made available of all the quilts so that tourists might be interested in coming into our area--it is really a push for tourism in our area.

Laura--My husband and I went to NC a month ago and drove through Somerset on our way. We noticed several barn quilts. There are suppose to be a lot of them in the Northeastern part of the state as well.

LindaEllen--a trailer quilt would be great too. You just might be the first and start a new trend!!!

Hey Ada, I love your blog, and wow what a great idea, a barn quilt. You just gave me an idea for the side of an old trailer that is used for storing. Its been here forever and looks like it will still be here for a long time, so i'll add a trailer quilt on the end, the end that I can see at a distance from the house. Oh and theres the Hen Den too, a quilt can go on that one as well. Barn quilts, what a great idea, thank you.

I'll be visiting your blog often : )

Hi, Ada! I LOVE your blog. And the barn quilts -- that one is wonderful. Explain to me a bit about what a barn quilt is and how it works. It looks like something that I would be very interested in doing here!
