hi ann ... i'm sure that judy will live on her beautiful homestead untl the day she dies. she has a few children .. don't know if they are interested in living there. wouldn't count on it coming on the market any time soon.

there are lots of wonderful properties like hers and kathys here in kentucky .. and if you are used to prices in other parts of the country .. you will be AMAZED at how cheap they are!!!

whoops .. i'm being called by one of the grands. later gaters. xo

Frannie,

I've not been on the computer lately, and I just saw the earlier post about Kathy's house. It is beautiful - and I love the idea of a big barn. Perhaps my ears have been burning - but the offers in MI aren't rolling in, yet. Actually, after I looked at the photos that you posted for Judy's house too - wondered if that would ever be on the market.

I just have to trust that the timing for everything will be perfect. Now that school has started here, it is harder to think of moving. I do have 2 upcoming weddings and the brides are thankful that I'm not driving in from KY to do thier flowers :)!

one of Jo Gummere's whimsical angelic dollies ... (i see she has taken a rose from the garland and put it upon her head .. me thinks she has been talking with FANCY NANCY!)
she wears a victorian baby christening gown.

Jo's trademark 'whimisical dolly face'. one of my most favorite classes ever taught at Crooked Tree Hollow Doll class was the one where we all made our dollies from mostly 'found' nature treasures. Our class was on the back porch tucked under the trees of our home overlooking the Magothy River in Maryland. Jo had us all go into the woods surrounding our home .. gather treasures .. sit and mediate for a few minutes .. then come back filled with creative energy!

this is ERNEST and CELESTA ... (jo taught me to make Ernest and my ten-year old Granddaughter to make Celesta!!) (they are named after one of my many aunts and uncles). They have chosen the "Stranger Room" as their home .. and i will often find them sitting upon the bed .. in rocking chairs .. on the book ledge (with the books scattered thither and yon .. they are avid readers and if you sit very quietly at the bottom of the stairs .. you can sometimes hear their 'growly' little voices reading to each other!

ERNEST in his snappy red striped 'tie'

CELESTA found the ribbon and made her 'teddy love' his tie .. then a band for her vintage polka-dot skirt!

they are profoundly in love and are never found far apart from one another.

=============

Uncle OTIS and Aunt BETTY ... made from MOHAIR! it was with great trepidation that i cut into this fabric as it is about a hundred dollars a yard! JO convinced me it would be quite alright! and VOILA! she was soooooo right!
I made OTIS and my daughter Wednesday made BETTY.

Uncle "O" .. as he is affectionally called by all his cub nieces and nephews.

Aunt Betty ... who had an unfortunate encounter with our dog BOO and lost an eye in the process! (i left this as symbolic of the fact that my Aunt Betty was indeed blind .. but it never stopped her from living life!

I have a wonderful story to tell of them wanting to 'adopt' me .. but will save it for our 'gathering'. xo

ohhhhhhhh .. i forgot .. a coupla' of the gurlz from maryland will arrive a day or two early .. now THAT will keep me hoppin'! and everyone that wishes to .. is invited to stay a couple extra days too! i will be taking some of the maryland gurlz back up to louisville on monday .. and we will try to hit an antiques shoppe or two on our way .. or better yet .. make a quick trip in t'other direction to visit our own Glovers' Station Antiques Mall in Greensburg .. before turning around and heading back up 'nawth'.

i live by the philosophy that my Nannie taught me ... "there is ALWAYS room for another potato in the pot"! hmmmmmmmmmm .. did i jus' call ya'll POTATOS???? but anyhoooo .. if you have not heard of this gathering before now ... or had not quite made up your mind to take a little vacation to kentucky .. and you wish to join us .. i 'bid thee kindly welcome'! jus' e-mail me and let me know which classes you would like to take. oh .. and you surely don't have to take ANY classes if you don't wish to ... you can jus' hang and giggle along with us! xo

CabinCreek-Kentucky Posted - Sep 08 2008 : 08:02:53 AM
thanks carol sue for the fun-wishin' .... well honey-chile .. there is one thing that i can always PROMISE .. i will indeedy-doooooo have FUN!

we have four incredibly talented teachers goin' to give classes in primitive folk-arty treasures.

On SATURDAY: we will all ride to kathy sugarbucket's beautiful home and 1800's log cabin. Kathy is buying and finding wonderful 'nature' things for a delightful autumn garland ... that chile' does everything FIRST CLASS. we'd probably have to pay $25 or $35 for such a garland! we will also tour her wunnerful log cabins .. and mayhaps find a treasure or two to take home with us .. I SURE DO everytime i visit! We'll all have a picnic lunch at Kathy's .. and probably play a fun game or two!

after a fun morning and afternoon of creativity and festivity .. we will ride over to Luna's Sheep Farm .. which is only about 8 miles from Kathy. Luna is going to teach us the most adorable felted PUMPKIN from her very own wool that has been dyed ORANGE. We will all take home new techniques so that we can make more of these wonderful creations for our friends. In addition to the class .. Luna is going to give us a tour of her sheep farm .. and show us how to pick-clean, wash, dry, card, spin and weave wool. She will have lots on hand for us to purchase if we tap into that 'spinnin' desire'!! Her wools are absolutely BEAUTIFL! I often get it for 'dolly hair' .. and it makes the BEST pin cushion stuffing you can get!

Then .. that sweetie pie is going to prepare a huge dinner for 30-some of us .. and of course, we'll have a big campfire to make s'mores!

OH! OH! OH! one of the gurlz suggested a "TRUNK SHOW" where we can all bring our 'hand-dids' .. and perhaps even some 'antiques' .. sooo ... i've invited EVERYONE to participate in the Trunk Show ... ohhhh .. lordy! in addition to crafting, eatin', gossipin' .. we gurlz doooooooo love to SHOPPE! (i'm sure settin' aside some extra pennies for treasures to bring home!) I was so pleased about this .. cuz' often when the gurlfrenz gather .. they all want to go find some shoppes .. and this way .. we all bring the shoppes to each other .. AND .. we also SUPPORT each other .. which is a biggie goal on my personal list in life. (HA! in addition to enjoying every moment of it!)

we'll have our 'trunk show' at luna's. she is creating a wonderfully 'area' for us to all set up like our own little County Fair!

On SUNDAY: My very special friend Cyndi from our doll-club in Maryland (she is a mega-talented folk artist) is coming all the way from Maryland to give a class in a 'primitive twiggy Pumpkin Tree' Cyndi's creations are nothing short of PHENOMENAL!
AND .. she is probably the funniest woman i have ever met. I have literally seen women cry tears of howling laughter .. and wet their underoos at her technicolor, three-dimensional theatrical renditions of her life stories!!

I swear .. she is even more exhuberant than me!! She dearly loves life. I don't know who can talk more or faster .. Cyndi or me!!! I adore that she also has (like me!) a 'deep' side to her and when she shares some of her stories .. you actually feel her pain. Her truth and honesty are a blessing to behold.

I just adore how all these women ... most of whom .. don't even know the women who will be attending ... have agreed to give these classes at no charge ... both Cyndi and Jo get 'big bucks' for teaching their classes. (i jus' loooooooves me 'true friends').

AND ... "I" made the 'momma' decision .. that we should all fairly be willing to pay for our kits .. after all .. these women are creating THIRTY-SOME kits for us .. AND i respect the 'classiness' of our frenz coming that realize that is a fair and kind thing to do to be willing to pay for these kits! We do not have to worry about getting all the 'right things' to make our creation wonderful .. or having to transport it .. or perhaps forgetting something important or not being able to find 'just the right things'. These girls have taken their personal time to create these PERFECT kits for us.

AND .. also on SUNDAY .. major doll and teddy bear maker, Jo Gummere (who has taught at Major Doll Workshops and Conferences around the country) ... and as my friend, used to come to our doll club in Maryland to teach (jus' wait t'il ya'll see my dolls and bears she has taught in those classes!) ohhhh ... i'll post some pics at the bottom of this posting!!! ... and our doll club always paid our teachers very well for sharing their talents) .. will be offering us kits and hands-on instructions to make a variety of four different dolls ... angel .. santa .. crow .. raggedy ann. she will be including many vintage pieces from her collection to do this ..

and the icing on the cake!!!: it will be so incredibly wonderful .. i have not seen jo in about ten years! (it will be a great reunion between jo and the four other Crooked Tree Hollow Doll Club members who are travelling from Maryland ... Jo is driving from North Carolina.

I'm having built a dear TREE HOUSE right now .. and we will have options to gather there for the night .. or on our big back porch (just a doorway from inside the house if one gets chilly or becomes afraid of the coyotes singing from the woods) ... there is also a big screened-in porch to settle on for the night too! AND .. one can always find a little 'nestling' place on the fireplace hearth. i do have three guest beds in the 'stranger room' ..and i'm givin' up our King Sized bed to a coupla' the gurlfrenz who have bad backs or have had surgery that makes it a little difficult to get up and down. (i've suggested everyone bring cots or blow up mattresses) i do have three cots to offer up. NO ONE has to sleep 'on the ground' unless they choose to .. ohhh .. and sleeping in the hammock under the apple trees is a true delight .. that one has not been claimed yet cuz' i don't think the gurlz know about it yet!

I have a few dear gurlfrenz who feel the need for a little more 'privacy' at bedtime and have chosen to rent CABINS down by the river in town (jus' ten miles away).

When we get back to Freedom Valley Farm Saturday night ... I'm sure we will not get much sleep .. as we will build yet another bon-fire when we get back .. for jus' sittin' around and talkin and laughing and talkin and laughin .. sharing our life stories!

OH MY YES sweet Carol Sue .. i PROMISE to have FUN! xoxo

t'would be delightful if you could join us too! i promise forever heart-grabbin' memories to all who come.

i'll go photo those teddy bears now and post 'em soon! xo

So, there are 2 gatherings there in KY? Well, I just have to be at both! In spirit, of course. I had already planned to send the recipe with the cookies just in case anyone did want it. You don't have to make a little card for each one, though, Frannie. That would be a lot of work!

oh steph .. i don't know anything at all about any other gatherings .. "i'm busier than a one-armed paper hanger"... (as my nannie usta' say) .. my honey-man just got back home from his week-long sailing trip .. our new 'tree house' is being built tomorrow .. i've got Arts Council commitments this week .. kathy and i are runnin' the roads to visit a wonderful primitive home in bardstown this week .. to potentially be a future article in Mercantile Gatherings Magazine .. oh gosh! just realized .. that adds ONE more thing to my list .. my article is due in a week!!! then THIS week we also head for TOLEDO and the BIG BIRTHDAY TEA PARTY for our granddaughter, Sofia who will be TWO!!! ... that is going to be SUCH incredible fun!

when we get back .. we turn around and head for North Carolina for a week-long beach vacation with friends .. no sooner do we get home and i have a week-long ART class ... water colors .. that should be FUN too! have invited all the students to come here for one of the classes to paint in a farm setting and a big dinner together that evening ..
and i am scheduled to teach another dolly class t'wixt and t'ween all these happenings too. lordy! i know i've left a few other things out! and i'll have about TWO DAYS to put all the finishing touches on all the fun plans for the gurlfrenz .. some of whom will arrive a coupla' days EARLY!! i've got kits and prizes and all sorts of things to prepare for upwards to 30-some gurlfrenz .. in addition to getting the new 'tree house' all decorated!! OH!! and the SHOPPIN' for vittles. i've had lots of gatherings with this many friends before ... but i tend to overcrowd my calendar with tons of extra fun things too! but i never mind because it makes for such a joyous and full life!

by the way .. i sent that lovely lace to you .. lordy! that thing turned out to be expensive after all the back and forth postage!!! i sure hope you love it dearly! i think i also tucked another treasure in the box for you too. has it arrived yet?

So Frannie since your gathering is October 11 & 12 are you going to Miss Wilma's gathering?..you are both in Kentucky, aren't you?? I'm not really in the loop on these happenings but figured y'all weren't too far apart.

I know it will be a good time on both accounts!

ohhh ann .. were your ears burnin' earlier today? i was talking to kathy ... telling her that i had gotten lots of great replies from my postings and e-mails about how much they love her big yellow farmhouse and 'antique' log cabin. i told her that YOU were thinking of moving here and i was going to mention that her home and cabin are going to be FOR SALE soon! (she and eddie want to build a wonderful SMALL house on BIG PROPERTY ... deeper into the woods for themselves. (her present home is on GREAT property .. right off a country road .. just 10 minutes from Elizabethtown .. that has just about every store an average person could want/need!!!!) If you are used to 'trendier' stores with high quality .. i'm not sure you will find that there. But there is a multi-plex movie theater .. Wally World, Lowes' Target, K-Mart, Office Depot and Staples .. lots of restaurants of every kind .. and a couple MALLS! i told her that i wasn't sure where you kids were with your move .. and i was waiting to hear her say it was definitely 'on the market'! she told me to let anyone that might be interested know that it can be for sale anytime now. (and her home is truly WONDERFUL!!! in fantastic shape .. defintely NOT a 'fixer-upper' .. perfect just like it is! and oh my gosh! her cabin is ADORABLE .. and her HUGE, GIGANTIC, HUMONGOUS sized BARN .. and other little out-buildings would make a PERFECT place for a business!!!

NOW .. ef'fen you wandered down this way for our Gurlfren Gatherin' .. you'd get to see it all .. and talk to her about it.

i did ask how close she is to Louisville .. she said about 40 to 45 minutes .. and it is a 'good' ride there too. Interstate most of the way. I think you can get more 'bang for your buck' when you get a tad away from Louisville .. and it is probably a LOT safer, more country too!! (I jus' could NOT live in Louisville .. while i am a BIG FAN of CITIES .. especially when you are younger and wanting a great career .. but in our 'freedom years' .. the TRAFFIC alone would drive me NUTZ any more!

gotta' warn you that there is another friend who might be interested .. she says she has always loved kathy's house .. long before she ever visited it. AND .. soon a whole lot of new people will be moving into the Ft. Knox area (which isn't far away) and they will all be looking for a home to buy .. lots of competition there .. sooo .. if you are interested .. visit soon!

here's a picture of kathy's beautiful big farmhouse:

Frannie,

I just can't even believe that I'm not living in KY yet. I thought for sure that when we put our house on the market in the spring - it would sell fast. I guess when 40% of the homes that are selling in MI are foreclosures - I shouldn't have been so optimistic. All that to say that it looks like I will have to be there in spirit too - unless something unexpected happens here.
