I always joke around with my family frm West Virginia and say "I could never move back home, too many snakes!" I have fond (??) memories of almost every family reunion with a snake or two in attendance. There was a time when I was 18 and driving to WV with my cousins in tow. We were all about the same age and laughing as we made our way up all the ess curves to our hometown when THUNK! A huge black snake fell on my windshield. We are lucky we didnt end up in a ravine or off the side of the mountain. I was shaking so hard I could hardly drive the rest of the way. to this day every reunion I get reminded of that.
So today I'm outside, barefoot, throwing the ball to my uber hyper black lab Sam. And I see something out of the corner of my eye very near my foot. A flippin' snake. I thought I was gonna lose my religion...twice. I made 2 swift movements: a physical movement and almost a bowell movement, screaming the entire way to the house, stepping higher than any marching band member has ever stepped. All of this to no audience, thank goodness. Hubby is out in the field a world away. After a few good shudders I think to myself, no one is going to believe me.... so I grab my camera and like someone that derives incredible pleasure from punishment I go back out to find the snake. I got the pictures...and I'm still shuddering!

NO SNAKES FOR ME!! Hubby knows that, and every summer we usually have a black snake around, he calls him Jake. Last night I got home and he informed me that he sighted him yesterday while mowing the lawn...he keeps me informed as he knows I am deathly afraid of even a garter snake...nightmares and such...YUK!!

i'm surely not plannin' a career as a 'snake charmer' .. and i SHORLEY AN BEGORLEY don't ever ever ever want to meet a 'piziniss' one in person! but so far, i've just seen a hand-full of black (cow) snakes here since moving to kentucky! when i have spied one .. i've made sure it is far enough away from me .. but haven't caught myself doin' the 200-yard dash yet! my funniest story about one is when i was hosting our garden club to a pot luck dinner here one evening .. a friend arrived early .. and i heard her call out: "hey frannie .. what do you want me to do with this guest?" .. lordy have mercy .. he was sittin' on my front porch to play 'greeter' .. she had him pinned down with a 'toy' garden hoe! being the FIRST one i had seen here .. (honey hunk wasn't here) .. i flew past my friend and 'jake the snake' .. got in my car and raced up the hill .. knocked breathlessly on their front door .. screaming: GLEN!!!! GET YOUR GUN!!! he sauntered to the door real slow country-boy style with a smile on his face askin' what trouble i'd managed to get myself in (he remembered the winter before -- when we had a huge snowfall) .. where he had to crawl across my tin slanted roof to get through a window to let me in cuz' i had locked myself out .. and yes .. i was in my underoos at the time .. i had simply opened the door to let the puppies out and the door slammed shut and locked behind me! i had to WALK up the hill in the snow .. with no britches on ..just undies and a t-shirt .. thank gawd i had boots on though -- What a VISUAL!!) .. ohhh ..and the time i tipped my car sideways into the gully by my house on christmas eve and he had to come yank me out! OH WAIT .. this is the "SNAKE" story! well, anyhoooooooooo .. after screaming that there was at least a 20-foot snake on my front porch .. glen smiles and gets in the car with me (NO GUN!!!) we arrive (as other guests have now arrived) .. and glen saunters to the front porch .. picks up my (six foot) cow snake .. wraps it around his neck and shoulders and walks calmly back up the hill with him!

(he DID manage to eventually find his way back down the hill to the rest of his kith and kin .. the SNAKE .. not Glen!)

i think after seeing how 'peaceful' that snake was .. it took the 'scared' a little bit outta' me! This is NOT to say that i want them taking up residence under my cabins .. and barn .. but alas and alack! they have!

I have a snake story too. I had a snake living in my water garden. #2 son said that it was just a water snake and wouldn't hurt you. I said yes it will, it causes heart attacks and busted hips. Couldn't shoot him cause of the pond liner. Finally he was sunning himself on a rock and #1 son shot him. NOW I have another one. When I feed the fish I shout and stomp around. Fortunately, he is more afraid of me than I am of him.

Oh my gosh! I used to run around by the irrigation ditch catching garter snakes! We even had one for a pet for awhile but he didn't really like us.

However- I do have a snake story...

I had gone to the outhouse barefoot and was coming back to the cabin. I was watching where I put my feet so I wouldn't step on a cactus. I was just about to step on this sagebrush when I realized the branch I as going to step on had eyes. I think it must have raised it's head for me to see it. I don't remember if it was rattling or not because my heart was pounding so hard. I think it must have been. I remember very vividly seeing the little rattle at the end of it's tail. I backed away and dashed around the bush. I leaped up the stairs to the cabin and collapsed inside terrified out of my mind of a little baby rattlesnake that was probably only slightly bigger than a pencil!

I am not fond of snakes either, but I do leave the harmless ones alone to do their jobs far away from me. It's the cotton mouths and rattlers that concern me the most. Shudder!

I would have done the high-stepping dance, too! But, I would have had the wasp spray to spray it in the mouth, then I'd have the shovel to chop the head off!!! Gross!

I let this one live... cuz I'm too chicken to get close enough to hurt it! Plus, I live in Ohio.... it was a garter snake. Yes, total sissy...I'd faint if I ever came up on something bigger...or worse yet...rattling!

EEEWWW!! I saw a huge black snake the other day when I was mowing the lower field! I had to let it live because I hear these are good rodent eaters!
