What are some of the uses for aprons, other than cooking, than you are familiar with?
After talking to my mother, sister and elders, they remembered :
--- aprons full of grain for the chickens as they did not want anyone to know their real destination was the outhouse
--- dusting furniture when you hear someone driving up the long country road or a surprise knock on the door.
--- fanning the air on a hot day
--- wrapping as a blanket around a child sitting in your lap or playing a game of peek-a-boo with a baby
---tying around a child's waist so they can pretend it's a fancy gown
---allowing the children to use the apron ties to guide you as their horse in games of play
My first sewing project was to make an apron and hem feed sacks (washed, softened and bleached)to make ready for the needlework. The feed sacks were hemmed on a treadle machine. We had a newer electric version but the treadle was tried and true.

Bring in the goodies from the garden. Be it in the pockets or turning it up to make a cradle for all the vegies.

To dry a dish or two. Swat at the dog. Used as a tool belt to hold nails, screwdriver, etc. Drying tears. Rocking a baby. And... a temporary laundry basket.

Nora loves one particular apron of mine- She uses it like a bath towel, or a gown, depending on her mood and the timing. ;) I have often flipped the end of my apron over Nora in the morning to keep her little legs and back warm while we are cuddling. I am becoming more and more attached to my aprons the longer I wear them. whatever was I thinking when I didn't own aprons?
