Posted - Aug 06 2008 : 12:42:04 PM I need some help. I found Charlie a bike for $3 at thrift but the chain is really rusty, how can I clean it? It is is good shape other than the rust.
Thanks.

Posted - Aug 06 2008 : 8:45:25 PM I'm not sure, but I think a kerosene soak, followed by brushing with a small metal-bristle brush would do the trick for even cheaper than WD40. |

Posted - Aug 06 2008 : 3:36:01 PM Yes, WD40 is great and then don't forget to lubricate afterwards with a good hinge type oil!

Posted - Aug 06 2008 : 3:15:01 PM Heather, I used to cycle regularly & always started out cleaning my chain with a good paint thinner, then follow up with the lubrication of WD 40 or a good one from a bike store. |

Posted - Aug 06 2008 : 3:14:13 PM Oh, yes, I forgot that some thrifts actually have a return policy! My haunts around here are 'no return'. I am the queeen of returns on things at Home Depot and Kohls -- good thing I can't return my thrifty finds, because I'd be going in circles constantly!

Posted - Aug 06 2008 : 1:06:38 PM Spray with WD-40 and scrub with a toothbrush. Hopefully you can do that with the chain remaining on the bike. If it is 'stuck' and won't move at all, think twice about purchasing.
Hope it works out for you and Charlie!
