So far, I am not impressed. I know they give everyone the same spiel and it is a temp. agency, so the run around to some scale is expected but really, do they think I am dumb?? I was very realistic about the jobs I would find and the pay and I was honest with them in the fact that if they really don't think they can find me a job, don't waste my time or theirs. I get the "Nope, nothing this week" even though when I talked to the "recruiter" she was really excited about my resume and skills and that I was "above most candidates that come in." Is this normal? Am I being to hard? I don't like people giving me the run around or not shooting straight from the hip.

Honestly, I have a temp agency to thank for my career...I was registered with a bunch of them, but one found me just the right position--one I wouldn't have even thought of--and one thing led to another, and here I am, all content and successful. :) Hang in there, but don't put all your eggs in one basket. The job market is so tight right now. Stay open to what comes and keep putting yourself out there--the right thing *will* come along! |

I got my last long term job through a temp agency. I wish I had seached the paper first, because the company was also hiring direct. So it took three extra months to get healthcare due to being a temp and having to get hired on.

I worked for a temp agency for 4 years, and the whole experience sucked. They found me the original 1 year position, and then they never placed me in another job. I patched together other jobs in the same organization through networking. Sometimes I was working two or three part time jobs for different departments. Some jobs lasted only two weeks. It annoyed me to no end that a third of the money the organization was paying out was going to this temp agency. I kept trying to persuade the organization that it would be cheaper to just hire me, but no dice ;)
The worst part about it, though, was that no matter how long I worked for the agency, I could never qualify for any kind of sick time or vacation time. I had to go to work sick in order to pay my bills, including 6 weeks of an excrutiatingly painful back injury. |

My son has had good luck in getting temp jobs this year - - he's a recent college grad and finding full-time 'career' positions hard to find, so he's doing the temp thing. His current temp job began in March and is still going strong.
But he did have to be persistent and go to several agencies. Once he was placed (and once that job ended), he found it easier to get a second placement.
Heather, I understand your frustration -- the job market is so very tight right now. But the temp agency is not trying to give you the run-around. They get paid when their people are placed, so it is to their benefit to place you if they can. I'd keep checking in with them in an eager and friendly way -- you will impress them with your persistence and willingness to work.

Back in the late 1970's, I was a "Kelly Girl". It was a nice organization and I got lots of work...more than I could handle. Not sure if they are still in business or what they are like now.

I know how you feel Heather...I've been to 10 of them, took all their tests, scored 100% on accounting, bookkeeping, Word, Excel, Photoshop, and Quickbooks as well as data entry of 12000+ keystrokes, type 85 words a minute. I've called each a few times a week only to be told that they have more people than jobs. I've heard my share of broken promises of "we'll send your resume to XYZ company" and then you never hear a thing. One company kept putting me off and switching me to different people (I'd call 2x a week). I did find out that one company was sending my resume to places I've already applied for, even after giving them a list of who I applied for. I get so sick and tired of being there for a couple of hours and then get told "I'm sorry, we don't have anything available right now, but we'll call" and turn around and advertise on job websites they have several job openings.
I've now become skeptical of temp agencies....they are "booming" with business with people needing jobs, thus they are meeting/exceeding company goals as compared to last year.
