A few weeks ago, we had people stealing our firewood. I actually caught some in the act.

We rehab and sell or rent houses for a living. The house we just completed had the central a/c unit stolen last night and they also kicked in the back door and stole the brand new electric cook top stove. We called the police and filed a report, and he basicially told us nothing they can do and just turn it into our insurance.

Anyway, I'm not in the greatest mood right now and my longing to get out of the city has now grown deeper. Calgon take me away!

Diana,
I really feel for you. We have a rental in Bonney lAke, Wa. DH went over a few weeks afo to repair some stuff from our last, deadbeat renters and found that our fruit trees and tree rings, snowball bush, lilacs, and yard statues were gone. It is nothing like what you lost, but it still makes me a feel sad. I believe in Karma.

Unfortunately, if we set any traps that would do bodily injury to the thieves, we could be sued by the thieves for bodily harm and/or possibly go to jail. So, that's not an option. I don't wish to do anyone bodily harm, I just want them to be caught and prosecuted.

I am sorry this happened to you, I would set some kind of traps and put in a security camera to atleast catch them on video and then give it to the local police.

On that note, some people just have nerve, last week I had someone spray paint my garage door with graffiti and this has never happened before... I want to move... maybe
my dream of having a farm will happen sooner than later.

Diana Have you ever thought about setting some steel traps, you can bet if they get their hands caught they wont take anything with them or they wont be back

Wow, Karin! That is crazy. I dunno Diana, I think at this point you might have to actually install temporary alarm systems in these houses or somehow get the police to patrol the place or something or it WILL keep happening That is really sad.

We had a couple here in Atlanta who would take their four children with them to subdivisions and steal the copper electrical wiring from new houses. The kids were young too- the oldest was maybe 10 or 11, all the way down to 3. How about those parenting skills?
It's absolutely everywhere, and it is just going to get worse. Imagine if these people would gear their creativity towards something good and worthwhile?

I guess he figures it goes with the territory, but of course he still gets very upset every time it happens. Kind of like getting bit by a dog and then sticking your hand in it's face again and getting bit. What's that saying? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!

Isn't your husband getting sick of all the stealing and destruction of your property? Or does he just feel that it comes with the territory because you rehab the homes? Just curious, sometimes women and men think so differently about these things!

We already put alarm sign company signs in the yards, but unfortunately not even those stop them anymore. The only dog we have is our 1/2 chocolate lab 1/2 beagle who's so friendly he'd let them in and show them where the good stuff is....LOL!

Aww sweets, that really is horrible. Is there a way to install a security system or other provision on these? Even the signs of security alarms in the windows (without actually buying the alarms) might deter these thugs. Or station a dog overnight in the building...the barking might scare them off? (Hmm, crazy idea, but just a thought) Yes, I agree, people can realllllly be bad.

I know you're both right about crime happening in the country also, but it's so frustrating. We'vd had copper pipe stolen from every house we've rehabbed, and windows broken, landscaping taken right out of the ground, etc. on several of the properties also. I put a lot of my own blood, sweat, and tears into these places, only to have some low lifes destroy them. I just don't get people sometimes.

I am sorry to hear about this too, Diana. I am not particularly fond, sometimes of the city but I think Frannie is right, my upstate farm friend repeatedly had people break in and steal farm equipment from the barns and shed and she actually had to pay for hi-tech alarm systems and bought two attach shepherds to finally get it to stop. Hmmm...wonder what the world is coming to, sometimes....

oh diana .. i'm so sorry this happened to you .. but this type of thing happens in the country too i'm afraid. people are people .. some with good intentions and some with not so good intentions .. we have friends who lived on a farm near the next town over. they had neighbors who SHOT and killed their farm animals (including an OX!) and even threatened THEM with a gun. (they moved back into town and have not had any problems since).

have another friend who was the sheriff of a small kentucky town .. swears he had 'proof' of corruption in high political places (drugs) .. but could not get anything done about it even though he was the sheriff. can't discuss all the particulars of it .. but i was apalled because i worked for the Justice Department in Washington, D.C. .. and when we made a case (we did NOT prosecute until we knew we had the case pretty much made!) .. those who broke the law had to 'pay retribution' both financially and with time out of their lives'.

Sadly, mean-spiritedness, dishonesty, unkindness knows no boundaries i have found.

I do so hope that you do find your country place sometime in your future and hope you are feeling better after that 'calgon' soaking. xo, frannie
