Got a few strings of leather britches beans done, was standing looking out my kitchen window and I thought this makes washing dishes more fun, I have a lot more pics of our gathering but my camera is acting up, The pics of the fruit trees are crazy because they are loaded to pcs so why did the peaches and apples hide in the leaves

Jen Bove is only about 45 minutes from me and I'm wondering if she's going to be there but I have emailed her and haven't heard anything....she has 3 little ones and works on the Outpost I think so I'm sure she's busy! I've never met her but would like to.

I think Shirley is the one that changes maybe in Memphis, I will fly out of Nashville, but we are hoping to get to gether on this, But she might be going to Alaska instead if so maybe Luna and I can go out together, she is really nice and you wont believe how pretty, I havent asked her but it would be nice traveling with her. If you want to fly up for our gathering we can pick you up in Nashville or if to Lexington Jessica could get you

I'm 3 hours from Memphis. I had 2 eye surgeries there...I was almost blind and now I can see (just like that old hymn)...great surgeons there! It's not my favorite place to drive to..I don't like the traffic but I was thinking of the 2009 Farm Fest at MJ's and heard you say you might be flying out of Memphis. How far are you from there?

What a hoot she is...remember that old show with Art Linkletter..."Kids Say the Darndest Things"? That would have been a great one...how cute! I remember years ago when I was a young newlywed, my husband's youngest brother came over who was 5 at the time and we had a black and white t.v. He asked when we were going to get it fixed! He thought it was broke because there was no color! LOL! I wish we were neighbors Miss Wilma! But we might never get any work done for all the talkin' we'd do! but what a great time we would have. Love ya!

I am so thrilled to see leather britches at last! I know I have read about them in various books, etc, but they look so great hanging in your window. I enjoyed seeing all you family pictures too, and of course your garden, your shop....You are such a treat Miss Wilma!

I remember James and Dean....didn't they make those beautiful whitewashed bird houses that looked like old churches? Can you do the 'leather britches' with any type of green bean?

Karen do you remember James and Dean that used to be with Country living and Country Home, I cant remember if it was their book or one of the magazines but they had some curtains made with strung up leather britches, I always had so much fun with their ideas, I used to do dresses for the angels they made

Sandra you are not dumb, I am sure there are things to eat in Ark that I have never had, I wish you was here I have a lot of green beans now and would help you do some, I think to read Lauras reply it might help some, but you eat the whole thing shuck and all. I use a darning needle and crochet thread to string them

Laura, leather britches are also called shuck beans, you wash , dry and string them while green and hang to dry, . I n the winter (we say) we pull them off the string , txist to break and cook all day long or more until done, I season them with a chunk of hog jowl or ham and salt. Not everyone likes them but me I always eat to many with cornbread. They can also be broke like to can , spread on a sheet on rooftop in sun to dry. I hadnt strung any in years so wanted to show the grandaughters how to do it, Years ago in Eastern KY. we would go up to see family the little houses were built on the side of the mountains with the porches high off the ground, every porch would be hanging full of green beans strung up, They are a mountain food and very expensive up there now. I love mountain food but I never did learn to eat those old greens and wont cook the stinking things in my kitchen

I know this sounds dumb....but how do you do that stringing and why? Do you eat the whole thing like a regular green bean or are the pods inside for eating like a dried bean you get in the store...pinto? I love your gardens and I would give my eye teeth for some of those peaches, Miss Wilma! How was your sale? I would like to grow some of those "leather britches"...where do you get them? You are such an inspiration and how DO you do it all?
