You know the old song by the archies? it is in the Bee Movie.. it has been on my brain.. cannt stop singing it.. this week at our farmers market we are highlighting the benefits of raw honey... Thought I would post my column I write for the local paper... If your a parent you can I am sure relate to my son thinking I am so not cool... oh well!

Ah Honey, Honey!

Recently I watch the “Bee Movie” with my youngest son Matthew. Neither of us were sure what we would think, as we both have out grown the whole animated video stage of things, but it seemed to beat starring at each other. We had exhausted the board games in the house.

Matthew thought it would be a good choice; reminding me that since I banned white sugar from the house (making Honey our primary sweetener while occasionally allowing real maple syrup and rice syrup and a little molasses),that this would be a movie I would like.

When we come to the part of the move where the Archie’s song (Sugar, Sugar),starts to play. I cannot help but grab the nearest wooden spoon (as my microphone) and proceed to sing (to the top of my lungs)….Sugar, ah honey- honey you are my candy girl and you got me wanting you. Honey, ah sugar- sugar you are my candy girl and you got me wanting you…..As my 11 year grabs both is ears and his eyes roll into the back of his head I make matters worse by "bust out a move or two"…at this point he is thanking the Good Lord that none of his buddies are present… as the songs ends I settle back into the seat next to him (of course he has now scooted to the far side of the sofa and stuck a pillow in between us (like that is going to save him)….It seems right, that we took the time to watch this little film. It reminded me that there is such a delicate balance in this ole world~ and way to often we forget and take it all for granted…There are so many things that we find in nature that are so yummy.. And have additional heal benefits... we ~ being the more superior beings~ have taken those things and made some labratory substitute or stripped the original down where there is no nutritional value and wonder why it has adverse affects on our health…

Many of us don’t know that there is a difference between processed honey and raw Honey. Processed honey has been taken and heated to a point where it kills all bacteria... which on the surface seems like a great thing, right... isn’t all bacteria BAD ?.. Well; really NO, it isn’t... There are a lot of beneficial bacteria as well that are immune boosting - where science actually shows that processed sugars (even honey) slows down the immune system – while Raw honey shouldn’t be given to very small children 12 months and under, however; for the rest of us, it is actually a nutritious and enzymatic food to add to your diet.

There has also been a lot written this year about the health of the bees, and Burt’s bee Co has some great articles and some pro-active projects to support the bee populations. If your interested in learning more, please check it out at www.burtsbee.com under their community tab you will see you can get some free wild flower seeds as well.

With all this in mind, we at the Market will be “honoring the Bee” this weekend, Come on down and talk to the folks at Mt Adam’s Honey Co and Durfee farms, and purchase some locally produced raw Honey and grab some info on the benefits of raw Honey.

We also invite you to come by the Market Booth and purchase some raffle tickets. We are raffling off a beautiful hand made quilt as a Market Fund Raiser. We will also have special Bluegrass music provided by Millie and Paul Davis of Ellensburg WA.

A quick note to the Prosserfarmchicks.. We will be meeting at the Park Friday Aug 1st in the evening – listening to the “open Mic” performances and sipping lemonade, watch your emails and the blog for more info – this will be a “Meet and Greet” and an opportunity to meet the other gals and share your area of interests… See you all at that the Market….
