I'M SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED! honey hunk and i walked around today to find the 'perfect' place for our OUTPOST (kathy sugarbucket is going to build it for us! we were, at first, going to put it at the 'edge' (but INTO) the woods .. waaaaaaaaaay down the hill .. across the creek .. but i told him that i honestly didn't think it would get used as much by the kids .. if it was that far away .. soo .. we decided to look for another 'perfect place'. He have a big stone building with a fenced yard (i had it originally fenced for our pups .. but we've built them a HUGE one now .. with thier very own 'screened-in porch!'

just below this fence is a wonderfully shady area under trees that surround this area. we're thinking maybe a 16 by 20 platform (so we can get the whole family on it! can't decide yet whether or not to put a 'roof' over it. i saw a wonderful TIN and i guess some sort of see-through plastic roof that i liked at a friend's house .. but then i thought perhaps we should put NO roof on it at first to see if truly 'sleeping under the stars' is preferable .. even though it will get wet when it rains. if it RAINS .. we'll jus' come INSIDE!

i love the outposts in maryjane's books .. can't have the lovely fancy bedding out there cuz' it DOES rain here a lot .. and the humidity, i fear would 'mildew' the lovely covers even if it did have a roof. (we'll put some sort of 'canvas' or 'sailcloth' WALLS .. on wire that can be pulled back. Will probably put 'railings' too .. so the little ones don't fall off of it. We'll do another 'firepit' down there too!

sooooooo excited .. doin' some fun stuff to the farm!

do you gurlz think: ROOF .. or NO ROOF? xo

Oh Joy! That sounds like me! I couldn't put it down! Those photos just take me away to a beautiful place. If I can't go camping today at least I can open up the Outpost book and take a mental camping trip for a while.

Didn't you just love how many beautiful kiddos MaryJane included? I don't think there is anything more beautiful than seeing a healthy kid playing!

I had an interantional meeting in Lexington yesterday. Not only was the meeting wonderful, I also, got to stop by the bookstore and get a copy of Outpost!!! I was dead tired last night but could not go to bed until I had looked though and read a large portion of the book! About 2:30 this afternoon. My sugar was up from lunch and I was tried from staying up way to late, so needless to say, it was all I could do to stay awake until 4:30. Oh well, I knew better. And the book was worth it;)

Frannie-

I love the sound of rain drumming on a tin roof! It's such a beautiful sound. Maybe you could make a recording next time there is a big cloud burst for all of us tin-deprived farmgirls!!

Big hug. You're a dear! Post a rain note in the Weather section, and I'll have a mental visit. :) Maybe run the sprinkler on my galvanized steel tub on the porch and have a lemonade and picture I'm in Kentucky visiting with you! :)

We make a difference.

OH, what fun! I'm glad you are making it happen so you can enjoy it. Lovely spot! I keep thinking of the sound of heavy rain on a tin roof on your porch. What fun!

this is the shady, little woodsy spot we chose for our outpost. it is near enough to the house but tucked into the trees. this is looking down into the woods

the opposite end looking up towards the 'corral'

this is the little 'corral' i had built for our two dogs when they were puppies. tried a garden in there .. but it got to be too shady.

little stone building where hank stores his riding lawn mower .. it's at the end of the 'corral'.

oh what fun . .i can hardly wait for it to get started and finished! xo

ALEE .. that's a great idea. haven't gotten to the 'decoratin' stage of it just yet. actually, i like that idea for the bed that we have on our screened-porch. since there will sometimes be 7 or 8 of us sleeping in the outpost .. i think we'll probably go the 'cot' route. oh gosh .. i once saw in a magazine .. vintage cots all done up with antique bedding .. it was LOVELY!!!

Frannie- You could always put the bed up in the outpost and then underneath the bed store air tight re-usable container that have the bedding you want in them. That way you could have your fancy bedding and not worry about the moisture!

WE WAITED T'IL THE GRANDS CAME GURLFREN .. so that is a 'fine time' to build one. AND if we knew the right way to hold a hammer .. we could probably do it ourselves.

Kathy and Krew are AMAZING .. did you ever see the PORCHES they built for us? A wonderful screened-in back porch off the lower cabin .. they made larger and added tin roofs to several of our front porches .. oh my gosh .. and the MOST MAGNIFICENT huge back-porch .. that is just our 'dream place'. AND .. oh fun oh fun! they built us a fantastic outdoor-shower deck ... (with hot and cold running water) ...

just yesterday they put a tin roof on our 'schoolhouse' porch .. only took them one day .. she will be here any minute to paint the inside of our house .. it will only take her a coupla' days.

Kathy is a 'whirling dervish' .. she dances around a spot of ground .. and something magically appears! I just can't imagine my life here without her. She not only has done all these 'wonderfuls' for us .. she is my very best 'gal pal'. I just love her dearly .. as does EVERYONE who knows her. She is truly one of those 'angels unawares' that the 'good book' speaks of!

I'm sure they will have the outpost built within a week or two once they start ... and i'll surely take pics!

Fun Fun Fun Frannie, I have wanted an outpost since I saw one in MJs book a couple of years back, but the funds just dont seem possible now or in the near future maybe when I have grandbabies Ill be able to fund it then. Untill then I'll just dream..... I know yours will be a place of great memories. Make sure you post us some pics as Kathy builds, and of course the finished project. How long will it take her? Karen

good mornin' michelle .. i think we have a GREAT 'compromise' .. (and of course, it took my dear friend Kathy Sugarbucket ... who, will be building it for us) to suggest it.

She said to build it (including the RAFTERS) .. do not put a roof on it .. go to our tractor supply store and get one of those heavy duty canvasses (the kind they wrap huge hay bales and even houses in) .. she said they have 'grommets' already in it .. she can create a 'roll up' thing for us. We can put it over the top of the rafters for those rainy nights .. and when we want to look at the stars .. VOILA .. just roll it up!

AND .. since the rafters will be there .. we can always cover it with a roof later if we so choose. Actually, i believe that if it RAINS .. our CABINS are within 'runnin' distance .. not sure i wanna' be OUTSIDE during our big storms with lightening (under the trees) anyway.

We won't have 'permanent' furniture out there .. but we'll use COTS that can't get hurt if they did get wet. And i'll put some comfy 'outdoor' type furniture (i've got that kind already in little 'spots' here and there outside .. it's been there for five years and withstands the rain .. you know .. those big wooden deck chairs and such). i think we decided on 16 feet wide by 20 feet long .. big enough to sleep at least 7 of us comfy. (hank and me and all the grandchildren!) THEY are the reason we are even building it.

I have an antique bed on our screened in side porch .. decided to not even put a mattress on it .. it would get 'soggy' from morning dew and BIG rains that blew in through the screens. I just got 'feather tickings' and LOTS of quilts and blankets .. that way .. i can jus' bring them into the house if we get a huge rain. I did put up heavy canvas curtains (floor to ceiling) on the side where the bed is so that i can pull them shut to protect from heavy rain.

We're so excited about our outpost .. it's NEXT on the list. (getting the house painted inside TODAY and outside hopefully in a week or two .. then the outpost .. and if i ever get that SCHOOLHOUSE cleared .. i'd love to make a wonderful 'visitor's cabin' filled with antiques ... (it would sleep about TWENTY!)

it's always great to have fun projects planned. xo

Frannie, how wonderful! Since you mention rain, a roof would let you enjoy your outpost even on rainy days/nights. I love the "truck/beds"! Wonder if you could use one of those air mattresses, and just make up your bed on those sunny days for starry nights? Wouldn't be so heavy to pack around as a mattress, and no field mice would have time to share your nest either.

We make a difference.
