My dh and his family have a hunting cabin about 12 miles from our house. (the rest of our family all lives "down state, under the bridge") We live in the Ottawa National forest so sometimes just being at home can feel like camping. However we can take the kids to the cabin for a few days of even more peace and quiet. I have a friend of mine, who bought land up here with a very old house on it. The house had no windows, no heat, no water..a really handymans dream home. He finally made the big move and brought up the kids and wife, rigged a shower out side and did one window at at time. Some friends had come up this way for vacation and stopped by their new "homestead" and ask his wife if she would like to go camping. she replied loudly " I AM CAMPING!".

We're campers too! I've always camped, since I was a little one so it was fitting for us to take our children camping. We started out in tents. Took our girls since they were infants. I remember nursing them inside the tents (glad those days are over!) Now that dh has a back injury, we've upgraded to a pop-up. It does have all terrain tires on it, so we can pretty much camp anywhere.

We do camp in luxury, but I'm finicky when we do camp. I don't like hearing my neighbors radio when I camp or having blazing lights at night. I want to hear nature and see the stars! I love cooking in my dutch oven over the open fire.

I have to admit, I do like having the potty inside the pop-up now. Makes those middle of the night potty breaks much easier on us girls!

I didn't realize we had so many pop-up and trailer campers here!

My boys and I camp too. We have a small (really) Viking pop-up that I tow w/my Subaru Forester. It has no electric but I run an extension cord when we are at the state parks. I cook over both the open fire and on a propane stove. We have a small fridge in the camper that makes it really easy for extended stays. We did the tent thing for a LONG time, even when my youngest was still in the backpack...but I hurt my back and that sleeping on the cold, hard ground is for the critters not me! When I go alone, I've taken the tent and I have a small backpack cot I set up in it with my air mattress on top of that. We just got back from 3 days at Pokagon State Park in Indiana. Fun! No rain. BONUS!

I used to love camping as a kid. We'd go every summer with dad. My dad has always believed it isn't really camping unless it's in a tent, good campfire, no running water, no electric and at least what "seems" to be a 1/2 mile from the outhouse. And he had one very strict rule before bedtime-- Put all the food in the cab of the truck and the trash to the wastebin before ya go to sleep. If ya didn't the coons would have it all and you'd have nothin for beakfast in the mornin.

Now that I'm a little older, the cold ground isn't so forgiving on my bones and I always get so cold at night. Yes even if it's 90 degrees I'm freezing. Well I might not have the cold problem now that the hot flashes have kicked in. I'll just load up on caffeinated sodas and lots of chocolate before bed time and my furnace should kick in full steam.

I love to camp, hence my name!! Anyway, we started out in a tent. Sleeping on cots, cooking over a campfire or propne stove. We bought a tiny 5th wheel camper two years ago. It was nice with all the amenities. Just this past spring we sold it! I know some of ya think we're crazy. But it was too tiny for my hubby. He's 6'2". We are going back to our tent. Which I dearly love. Just take me camping that's all I ask. We started Rendevouz-ing. So we're on the lookout for a wall tent. I guess we'll be tenting til we're old! But that's ok by me!

I went camping with my daughter for the first time last month.
We went tent camping, and used an air matress and sleeping bags.
I/we LOVED it. Despite our noisy "neighbor".
We went camping in Chippewa Falls, WI with some friends.
We also had propane Coleman stove, and a campfire.
There were flushies and showers at the campground we stayed at, which is perfect for me.

I will definitely do it again! Only I will have to invest in a better quality tent.
The one I used was purchased on 90% clearance for ten bucks at Target a few years ago, and suposedly slept 4-6 people.
Um, no, it was barely big enough for me and my petite daughter. And it wasn't the best quality either. But for ten bucks, it sufficed for the weekend.
Lauren can play with it in the back yard with her friends. It pops up easily, and if it gets wrecked, not such a huge loss.

I don't mind getting dirty or wearing bug spray to bed. But I was glad I had a real toilet to use, a sink to brush my teeth and wash my face, and a hot shower in the morning.

My son "doesn't do outside" so he went to Grandma and Grandpa's-protesting the entire time, because he thinks he can stay home alone all weekend. (foolish boy)

Celeste.....Sounds like you have traveled a similar kind of camping journey that we have (as I wrote in my last post!).....We still love to cook outside and have a small grill we us for that (on cold/wet days we are glad to have the inside stove and oven though).

We have enjoyed using it to travel and for going fly fishing, etc. When we were younger and used our tents we loved it as well! We still enjoy hiking and doing all the other camping things we used to do. My husband has always been a real outdoorsman but at this point in our lives we really enjoy having a shower and a comfortable bed to sleep on........... especially on long travel trips which still feels like camping out because we love going to places where we stay right on the beaches or in Forests!!! When we have Grandkids, we will set up the tents again for them!!!

Great topic! My hubby and I always laugh at how our 'camping' has evolved. While in our 20's we tent camped. Our 30's we bought a pop-up camper--the last thing we could do and still call it camping. When we hit our 40's (and had kids in the mix) we bought a mini-motorhome and have NEVER regretted it! We travel with it all the time and with gas prices what they are, we just travel a bit closer. The kids adore it. We still have that tent from our 20's (it's packed in the motorhome), and we'll take the kids tent camping when there a bit older, but at this stage of our life, it's nice to be off the ground!

Yep Lisa, that was the time, my hubby's horse got spooked took off for a couple hours in the snow and the hail storm. We lost most of our camping gear all over the mountain side. While the trail washed out from under out feet while we were comeing down a steeeeep mountain. It was greatVery long story but did have a happy begining and a happy end the in between stuff was interesting to say the least. The first three days were great not one person did we see. Memories to last a life time. I would do it all over again.

We love camping, too. I love being in a tent but it seems as you get older it gets too hard to sleep on the ground. Why is that? So, we haven't done much the past few years. Our ideal spots are far from civilization, where you don't see a soul or any evidence of people for days. Next to lakes or creeks are the perfect spots. The sounds of running water, bugling elk, crows, squirrels, coyotes and wolves. It's so restful and yet exhilarating at the same time. It's one of those things that just can't be explained, only experienced.

Hey, Laura, wasn't that the trip that one of your horses took off and you guys had to hike all over the mountains to find it? You should tell the gals that story. I know it wasn't funny at the time, but the way you tell it now, you'll have these gals rolling on the floor.

Love your lake pics, Jenny! Looks like fun. (Can't believe you have grown kids!)

We are going to "the river" week after next. It isn't that far from home, so we can run in and milk, do chores, and go back. It will be the tent ~ 2 room tent, campfire, coleman stove, and lots of fun! Don't ya love how everything taste soooo much better cooked outdoors! I can smell the campfire now.

I love to camp. One of the best kept secrets is the warner meadow in Lassen National Park. I spent several weeks with a friend of mine who was working in Peru for Physicians Without Borders. He had to bring a woman with him or the village people would not let him look at the woman and children. We went 12 hours by car and then 9 hours by motorized canoe to get to the village. It was an amazing trip.
We have not camped since we had the baby. I can't wait till he is a little older

As a kid we use to tent camp and cooked outside. The college I went to was near Yosemite, so groups of us would go up on the weekends and camp, usually outside, weather permitting.

Later, much later, mom and dad bought a motorhome, but we only stayed in that for sheep shows.

Now I'm looking for a vintage trailer like some of the other ladies. I enjoy being outdoors sitting by a fire absorbing nature, but sleeping on the cold ground has lost its appeal.

i don't think i have ever camped out (even by my house) alone .. all night. don't think i'd be scared .. (well .. maybe a LITTLE) .. we hear coyotes at the edge of the woods from time to time .. THAT would get me to runnin' inside!

some night this summer . i WILL sleep in the hammock all night!

what GREAT wool on 'trixie'!!! that would cover the heads of about a million dollies!

We love camping. The kids and I especially. Husband would MUCH prefer to trailer camp..and I think we may go that way again someday soon. For now we use our 12 year old trusty tent..which is wall to wall with the 4 kids at home and us..time for a second tent for the boys ...or a new cute one for the girls maybe...and we cook mostly over the campfire..but do take our little propane campstove too. We just got back today from a short (3 day 2 night) campout..and had alot of fun. Rustic it really wasn't..a state park campground by a sweet little lake only 7 or 8 miles from home..but we had a good time. There are pictures posted on my blog now from the camping.
I would dearly love to get a sweet little camp trailer to fix up. When my grown boys were teens I had a cute trailer that was the base, and they had their own little dome tents..we camped over the campfire and then played cards and games in the trailer if it rained...
I am a person who HATES hotels and motels an so camping is the only time I like to sleep in another bed..still my bed (old army cot and quilts for me) just outdoors. I actually slept outside Sunday night...felt really claustrophobic and it was a beautiful breezy night. I dragged two lawn chairs together and slept there with my favorite quilt under the stars..it dosn't get better than that.

Gosh...we have run the gamit! Younger days we really roughed it....backpacked and slept in a really little tent in sleeping bags.......When our son was little we had a wonderful pop up camper....had loads of fun in that!!! Now, must admit we enjoy our 5th Wheel RV with lots of home conveniences!! Just depends on the time in your life I guess..........Wouldn't change any of the "times"!!!

WE love camping! Though my tent days are soo over hate sleeping on the air matt. We have a 23' trailer with a bathroom, bunks , kitchen ect. We tend to always go beach camping right next to the sand. My boys love it. We are going first week in Aug with a bunch of friends. My kids always sleep so much better when we camp! I make my HM marshmellows and everyone loves em!

I'd really never camped until I went on an Outward Bound trip after college. 23 days in the Colorado Mountains. LOVED IT. Bought a tent as soon as I could. My husband and I have always been tent campers - without air matresses (though that would be cozy). Occasionally we would stay in a little cabin at 1 certain campground that we fell in love with in MI.

Last night though, Tony was scrubbing the outside of our little garage sale find - a '63 Minnie Winnebago. Today, I'll be working on cleaning the foam cushions. Tomorrow I'll borrow my mom's sewing machine to begin recovering the foam and making the whole thing SOTF adorable :)! So excited to have a project to work on with my man. We have had a lot of house projects but one of us was always watching a baby while the other worked. We are excited to build some new memories with this.

It is fun to read others adventures too. Great photos above!!!!

Well, I never used to like camping one bit- 'til I met the fella, and it was about all the vacationing we could afford to do, lol. He's an eagle scout and a mountain goat, and has hiked and climbed some pretty serious stuff. We usually meet in the middle and tent camp at a prov. or state park. Once he convinced me to do 'hike in' camping, which was all right until it started pouring rain, and all the dry creek beds turned into raging icy rivers that we had to cross to get back to the base of the mountain and the car! Oh my! I was not a happy camper that time. I thought I was going to be washed away.

On the way up! Beautiful.

Out in the wilderness.

I have to cross what?!

We rarely had a fire or cooked in the fire when we camped out west because of all the forest fire risk- campfires were a big no-no. :(

My kind of camping was at the Huckleberry Tent and Breakfast in Idaho. We had a wall tent with a lovely bed, and an outpost kitchen, and an outhouse down the path through the woods. I think I could have happily moved in there for at least a month!

My hubby, 2 little ones and I camp in an 1982 Viking Popup. It was a freebie from a friend of ours and we busted our butts to make it campable. We love it! We mostly use it to sleep in cause we're so busy doing things outside at the state parks or campgrounds. We cook outside over the hot coals, play cornhole(beanbag toss game), the kids ride bikes or go swimming, and the best part is just relaxing!

Just got back from camping at a beautiful campsite by Pierre Lake. It is one of six sites in the state of Washington that has a nesting pair of loons. We moved here from Minnesota where there are tons of loons and they are one of the things we miss.Nothing like the call of the loon to signify wilderness. We sleep in tents, cook over the campfire or Coleman stove. There is no water there so we bring our own for drinking and heat water from the lake for cleanup. We've been doing this for as long as we have been married--41 years. Love it! JoAnn

I love camping and I even love the roughing it part. Hubby does not. His idea of camping is a cabin without indoor plumbing.
