I have been gone for a little while and I went to an 'antique, collectible, thrift' store' I found on my journey.
So I have to show Nancy Jo and everyone else what I found.
Also I am going to put some pictures on my Strawberry Hills blog. but this first. Yes another PIE BIRD--the red one.

Judy the site you provided is very interesting. I am sorry you all have piebird envy but I am hiding mine from now on. lol The other types are cute but I do like the birds and I think the black one is the only old one the others seem fairly new. MB

So cute - thanks for the lessons on pie birds. Never saw one before. Wonder who ever thought of that in the first place? Obviously someone whose pies boiled over all the time! :)

AWESOME!!!!

Me too, me too. Pie bird envy. I wanted to buy one at the Burlington antiques show, but they weren't NEARLY as nifty and Janice said they were too steep! I think we keep thinking our thrift stores are as hip as Nancys!

You and me BOTH, Janice, piebird envy it is! Too cool, Mary Beth!! You guys slay me! You stumble across the neatest finds, and all I usually stumble over are rocks. I have never had a pie bird and after seeing all these, the search is on! Having been given the nickname "Birdbrain" years back gives me even more incentive! Hugs to all! Nance

Oh, Marybeth! You're killing this Kentucky girl!!! I'm DYING from PIE BIRD ENVY! :D The cardinal one is the best one yet! I've never seen a red one! I'm happy for you, but green with envy for me!

Very cute! My sister collected pie birds. The cardinal is the first one I've seen. Usually you see crows.

found this fun and interesting too:

HOW TO USE A PIE BIRD:

Line the pie dish with pastry, place the "bird" in the centre, put in the filling around the "pie bird" then put a pastry top on but allowing the pie bird to stick out of a hole in the pastry . Pinch crust around the bird's shoulder, allowing the head to stick through the pastry. The bird will release steam through his mouth "vent" during baking and help to prevent fruit juices from bubbling over into the oven .easy as pie!!

No pie funnel? No matter. Make decorative holes in the top crust and insert several pieces of macaroni. These mini "chimneys" allow steam to escape and keep the pie juices from boiling over.

What is a piebird anyway?

Pie Birds or Pie Funnels as they are called in England are "steam vents" that have been placed in the center of fruit and meat pies (while cooking) since Victorian Times.

Pie Funnels were used in baking pies and prevent the pie from boiling over in the oven by allowing the steam created when the fruit filling or other contents are cooking to escape from inside the pie. They also supported the pastry crust in the center of the pie, so that it did not sag in the middle.

YOURS ARE REALLY CUTE!!

MB,
YOU CORKER!! Love that Red one. I only have one. Jeannie- they are made to be put in a pie, on the top crust to release the steam from the pie while its baking.

Cute cardinal! I love pie birds. Funny, I don't use them though. They just sit on the shelf. One day I will stick one in a pie!
