I bought these poor abused chairs at the thrift store yesterday for $3.50 each. The upholstery needs to be re-done and here is a "before" set of pictures. I will be sanding, staining and giving a deep beeswax and mineral oil finish to them over the next couple of days!

Tell me what you think!

And this is what they look like refinished!

Thanks everyone! I only have two chairs done out of the four. The project got put on hold with the family emergency and all. I hope to finish them up this weekend. Then I will take a picture of the dining room with the revamped table and chairs all happy together!

Thanks! I have done two and have 2 more left to do. It takes a lot of sanding to get the wood smooth again and my fingers get worn out! LOL I will probably finish the other two today.

What a great find, Alee. Those chairs are just wonderful. Too bad the finish was in such bad shape. You know what they say about removing the "patina". But with those it looks necessary. I look forward to seeing the "after" pics.

We also found an old chair at Rose's yard sale this weekend. It could use refinishing (someone had already started it) and the black leather seat is worn, but dh (so far) won't consider refinishing it. He might change his mind later ;)

Love the chairs and what a deal! I like getting old chairs and fixing them up. I have done it twice and am hooked, I am wanting to learn how to reupholster some all fabric chairs but I am a little afraid! Cannot wait to see your after pic.

I wore out my sand paper yesterday so I went and got some more from the dollar store. More sanding. Lots more sanding. Guess I am giving my lawn a really fine wood mulch! LOL

Sure thing! I can hardly wait to get them done! I think they will be so pretty when they are all stained and glowing again. I am really sad that some of the filigrees in the center of the back are really badly damaged. I am going to try to save them but one of the chairs has an name and address of the company. I am going to write it down when I am out there today, call or email them to see if they have any in some storage room just in case I have to replace them.

I agree! Beautiful lilting lines in those babies and HIGH FIVE for the great price! Don't forget to post those photos after they get the Alee treatment!
Alee Posted - Jul 12 2008 : 8:56:44 PM
Well, as much as I hate to strip off an antique finish, all four are stripped down. In some places the stain was so close to the surface that it got sanded down to raw wood in just a few strokes! (hand sanding no tools!) Tomorrow I am going to get right back out there and go over them with fine grit sandpaper until they are silky smooth again. Then they will get stained and a homemade beeswax/mineral oil finish rubbed in until the wood won't absorb any more. I can hardly wait!!
