HA! not exactly your 'farmgirl subject' .. but i saw an ad for a show that's going to be on tv (i was watching the movie CASSANOVA .. with Heath Ledger) .. with commercials .. flipped through and saw a short blurb about probably one of those REALITY TV shows that i DO NOT watch .. but it brought back memories of when i worked in the Criminal Division at Justice and the Federal Witness Protection Program. (This particular office was one of our most 'secretive' .. and it was not under our jurisdiction .. but i had a few friends who worked for it.) We NEVER EVER discussed anything from their office (or mine).

When i thought of it .. i thought of FARMGIRLS and wondered how we'd all survive in such a program. No contact, ever again, with any friends or family members .. new identities, professions, areas of the country to live in.

How do you think you would do in such a program? You never know until you know the circumstances of WHY you are in the program ... but lordy! i cannot even in my wildest dreams ever imagine not being able to be with my children and grandchildren! WHEW!

i think my toe is starting to throb!!!

Alee,
I imagine there are pretty stringent rules about even untraceable calls. The only "source" I have is the USA show "In Plain Sight". But I don't think they are too far off the mark when they (on the show) say it's a complete do over, and NO contact with your old life. I, too, would have a very hard time, at least where my parents are concerned. My sibs, not so much, but part of that may be due to the fact that I lived 2000 miles away for 10 years. When I think about it, I generally think about whether I could take my dog, sewing machines, and fabric with me. Yes, I'm bad!!

Hi Frannie-

This is actually something I have thought of a lot before. My family and I are so close that it would be devastating to never get to talk with them ever again. I wonder in this new age of untraceable cell phones if they allow limited "I can't tell you where we are but we are okay and miss you" type phone calls. If that was allowed I would MAYBE survive through.

Heath Ledger plays the fabled romantic as a man who, after failing to win the affection of a particular Venetian woman, strives to discover the real meaning of love

Casanova is love with Francesca, who thinks he is a friend of himself even though he is engaged Victoria, who is the love of Giovanni, Francessca's brother. Francessca is betrothed to Paprizzio who thinks Casanova is the feminist writer Guardi, who is really Francessca's nomme de plume. Amidst all these secret identities and misunderstandings, the Catholic Church sends Pucci to bring Casanova and Guardi to trial for heresy

Wait, Frannie, you said Heath Ledger was in a movie called Casanova?! How come I never heard of this one? I so love that guy. It's so sad he's gone. Is this a newer movie? or how old is it?

By the way, I would so hate to be in any kind of position where witness protection program would be necessay.

If I knew that it was the only way to keep my loved ones safe then I would endure--which is usually the reason to go in--but that would be h-e double hockey sticks for me!
