I was talking on the phone with my boyfriend last night, and the summer camp where he's working got a case of salmonella-tainted food delivered to the cafeteria. Of course, nobody knows it's got the salmonella until the ENTIRE camp is SOOO SICK!!!

He got it really bad, and nearly all the campers had to go home early, and all but 6 of the camp counselors got it. Some of the staff are still in quarantine...

And I was just letting my ""tomato watch"" relax... I am back to picking 'em out of my food.

That's it. After so much reading(here and elsewhere - and the news and everything!) and researching, and finding a great co-op for local/organic fruits and veggies, I am not buying anymore of that in the grocery store .. and I am not eating any more chicken (I stopped eating beef for the most part) and replacing it with beans and brown rice, etc.....I have just had enough! Agggh!

I was told that if you cook it down it is ok. A week or so ago I bought 8 bunches of cilantro from Walmart to make tomatillo salsa (tomatillo's were also from walmart- cast offs given to us). We at some fresh to taste test but then the rest got cooked for 10 minutes before canning- we have eaten the canned stuff too and no one else has gotten sick- I also used peppers from Mexico. makes you wonder..

Justin's feeling back to normal, thank goodness, and so far things seem to be fine again at the camp. Ya know, that almost rules out 100% of ingredients for salsa!!! Does processing the food kill the salmonella? Or should we be avoiding packaged/processed tomato products, too? Anyone know? I think it would kill it, but I have no desire to risk getting it....

Gosh - I hope that he and the kiddos are doing better! How scary! This is why I buy our produce that is locally grown from farmers that I know.

I heard that they are NOT SURE what is causing it but are now checking into things often paired with tomatoes such as cilantro, jalapenos and other foods.

We have been very blessed that with all the free produce we are getting that nothing has gotten us sick. I just pray over everything. We ate some tomatoes fresh but most got cooked for salsa. our peppers were put in the freezer- they are from Mexico- so I will make sure they get cooked before consuming.

Alee, it's still spreading really bad from what I hear. It was up to around 943 confirmed cases, last night on the news. It's scary, not being able to eat VEGGIES without worrying about getting sick.

Oh my gosh! I hadn't heard that it was spreading! I kind of assumed that it had struck and the mess was cleaned up! I am so sorry to hear your boyfriend is so sick!

It is not just tomatoes now, but peppers & green onions, all coming from Mexico, I think.
Get that garden in the ground!
