With the price of gasoline climbing higher I'm seeing more folks out riding their bicycles to work and for running errands. I am considering riding my bike to work some days to help save on gas and also to add to my exercise regime. I have a lovely cruiser bike that hubby bought me last year that I do enjoy riding, but I don't feel safe on it. I'm only 5'2" and I can't put my feet flat on the ground while sitting on the seat in a stopped position.
What kind of bikes do you farmgirls ride and any suggestions for a good bike that would fit a shortie like me?

Can you adjust the seat height? That's the first thing I'd try. If you can, just be sure that you don't lower it so much that you bend your knees too much. Your leg should be just shy of fully extended at the longest point of your pedal stroke.
I'm 5'4", and I can't put my feet flat on the ground while sitting on my bike seat either (26" bike). It bothered me a lot at first, but I got used to it. When you come to a stop, take one foot off the pedal and lean to that side to put your foot flat on the ground. Keep the other foot on the pedal (with the pedal up at the "top" like you're just about to pedal), and that gives you a better position to take off from anyway, rather than having both feet off the pedals.
My husband started riding his bike to work a few weeks ago, and he loves it. It's a great idea if you can get comfortable riding with traffic. I used to ride to work when I lived in a small town, but I'm scared of the multi-lane intersections around here.

I think those are the sweetest bikes! I would love that too,I think they are pricey though.I'll have to stick with my Target special:( |

I would love one of those bikes that looks like a overgrown tricycle with a basket on the front. and a trailer to haul my youngers around. that would be so fun!

I have a racing bike, but my fat butt has not been on it this year. It is a Cannondale light aluminum frame with clip on pedals, Shimano parts and is very aerodynamic but not user friendly as far as carrying much. It is very smooth riding & the clip on pedals greatly help with your pedaling efficiency. Oh yeah 20' tires. Skinny things with no tread.
I like the idea of a one speed with a big ole' basket though, but that would NOT do around here. We have helacious hills. |

My husband and I have been looking for a bike for me, simply to ride to the store up the street, and also for exercise. I don't want to pay $300.00 for one, though!!! I'm also small, and the 24" seems like the best fit...I found one at a local toy store that I adored but Jus said I need at least 1 gear for the hills. So, we went to Target and found some Schwinn's there, but they're too big. The one that I liked looked just like a Cape Cod bike...simple, metal fenders, and black.
I know I'm a girl, but I really don't want a pink or aqua blue bike....I'm just not that girly, and they even sell those in the women's coaster series. They have red at Target, and that's doable, but I couldn't even get on it!!!!

I am also a shorty 5'3" I have a "big girl" bike.I think a 24 inch.I love riding bike!I am 6 miles away from the closest grocery store,me and the 4 kiddos are biking there today! Wish me luck they are 2,4,6,8 years old! |
