Fellow Farmgirls, last night I attended a Women's Ministry Event at my sister's church titled, "A Sherperd's Heart". The guest speaker was Peggy Godfrey from Moffat,CO. She is a natualist, a poet, a writer and a sheep rancher. She is quite a story teller, very antimated and funny. The very first poem she recited was "Real Wealth" and as soon as she finished all I could think about was how perfect it was for all of you. Please read it out loud, it sounds better to your soul.

REAL WEALTH

My neighbors don't live close to me
But we've each got our niche
Government says this area's poor
Our secret is: we're rich.

My wealth won't buy insurance
it won't trade in for much
But "rich", to me, is measured
By things no one can touch.

A hint of mint in native hay
Fresh, sweet mountain air
Owls perched high in cottonwoods
A golden eagle pair.

Sheep that run toward my voice
Love in a little boy's eyes
The fryin' smell of just-caught trout
A winter when nobody dies.

The pleasure of makin' a garden,
Soft soothing drizzles of rain
One dazzling double rainbow
Good lessons that come without pain.

Summers that age into autmuns of gold
Wind hummin' songs like a choir
Sun shinin' on crystals of ice
That glitter like diamonds on fire.

Courage to face disasters
Laughter to lighten the load
Humor to flavor the tasteless times
Common sense to level the road.

Joy filters through my senses
I know this life is healthy
Won't build up my bank account
But damn sure makes me wealthy!

Hope you enjoyed it. And when I'm counting my wealth you girls are the "BIG BUCKS"!!

with love,
the handmaiden

"Faith shall finish all that Hope begins."

Kim- How true that poem is. We are so bombarded with the plethora of material "wants" from all directions, that it is a breath of fresh air to find that the simplest things are what bring the greatest joy.
Thanks for sharing that.

Kim- Thanks for sharing! What has always been most precious to me never had a price tag, nice to know others feel the same. It's hard where I live because people tend to judge the quality of a person on the newest car, size of house, etc... and seem to miss the value of people's true beings. Shallow people value empty things and yet a truly rich person knows the real value of every minute of their life.
Thanks for the reminder that I am not alone in recognizing these riches!

with a happy heart

Kim, soooo true. We are wealthy!! Thank you for sharing this poem.

May the sun bring you new energy by day, may the moon softly restore you by night, may the rain wash away your worries, may the breeze blow new strength into your being, may you walk gently through the world and know its beauty all the days of your life. ~~Apache Blessing

Thanks so much Kim for the beautiful poem! I needed to read that today! Very inspiring!

If I keep a green bough in my heart, the singing bird will come.

Thank you for the poem, Kim. It warms my soul to know, and be reminded each time I come to this site, that there are American women and women all over the world who know the real meaning of life and faith and love. And freedom.

This poem says it all!

This makes me think I'm not so weird after all! We blazed a nice walking trail through the back of our heavily forested property. I was always bringing up the rear as I thoroughly enjoy just drinking it all in...the trees, moss, frogs, streaming sunlight, etc. One rock I picked up was like a garden in itself...covered in moss, lichen, little fern and little salal growing on it. True beauty in my eyes.
I feel like I'm wealthy because I can find all the beauty in the world on the one rock...very blessed to have a wonderful grandmother and mother that instilled the love of nature in me.
