we are looking at lake michigan as a possible vacation spot for this summer. What part do you reccommend? We are looking at the Michigan coast.

Can't you???? The girl was very nice--very sheltered, but very nice, but her mother was just a snake, for sure. I was 15 years old, and after she called me a sinner, I called my mom and cried and cried...my feelings were SO hurt! No offense, Katie, but I feel much better that I went to a VERY liberal performing arts school in Michigan, and not one in Holland :)

Jonni -- Oh, I feel better knowing that your impressions of Holland were person-based more than place-based. The Christian Reformed churches in Holland did not allow dancing when I was growing up -- and our PUBLIC high school had no dances. The policies at the high school have changed, but I don't know about the CR church . . . anyway, I can envision the horror of the mother whose dd was to room with a (gasp!) dancer!!

We went to Traverse City through Mackinac Island last year (on vacation from our vacation in Grand Rapids!) and had a really relaxing time, went to the Soo locks and ended up in the UP at Grand Marais to visit some friends.
We just took our grandsons to the beach at Muskegon (GREAT beach) the other night, see my blog for details.... they loved it. The Muskegon summer festival is going on right now. http://www.summercelebration.com/
I agree with everyone who said you can't have a bad time in West Michigan. I went to Beulah with Michigan Bicycle Tours one year (are they still around? The weather always seems to be perfect, skies are crystal clear - storms come and go quickly.

We traveled the west coast of Mi probably 25 years ago and loved it, I bought wonderful antiques,I would love to go back, oh if gas would just go down, looks l I will just be spending a couple of weeks over at Green River lake, But thats okay I need some quiet down time anyway

I should clarify...Holland and Frankenmuth were always the places my mother and aunts wanted to stop in Michigan both too and from school....I either wanted to "get there" or "get home" so to be fair, I don't hate Holland except to say that it was in my way! Additionally, my first suitemate was from Holland and her mother protested our living arrangement because I was a dancer, and she was of some sort of religion (brought by the Dutch) that forbids dancing. So her mother told me I was a sinner, and that her daughter was to have nothing to do with me, and that she would be transferred by the weeks end....so again, Holland held nothing but weird stuff for me. No offense :)
Frankenmuth is Christmas H*** to me.

Love Michigan! I'm from Holland -- or rather just south of there. Love Saugatuck/Douglas; Holland is bigger but still fun; good antiquing in Spring Lake; Manistee has great fishing. Travel up the coast beyond Traverse City -- We honeymooned in Northport and it is so beautiful, laid-back, and cherry-rific!
There are too many wonderful places on the West Coast of Michigan -- love the Beulah area and the Sleeping Bear Dunes. And I agree about Mackinaw Island -- go in the fall and skip the crowds. Wonderful places in the U.P., too, especially on the peninsula that goes down into Lake Michigan kinda toward Door County -- very beautiful, pristine beaches.
Jess - - I lived near West Olive all my growing-up years and yet never have been there. Just was at the Douglas antique mart last weekend. Love that area!
Oh, and Sawyer has a great garden center/produce place. For cherries to munch on your way up the coast.
Jonni -- Holland should not be second-worst on your list! It is a bigger town, but has quite wonderful places to discover. But I agree -- farther north is probably more relaxing -- Up North is the best!

I live near Holland Michigan(15 minutes north) We love it here.Great beaches,shopping,its just pretty.Saugatuk is a fun little town on the Lake just south of Holland.Great little shops,beach,really cute artsy town.Hope you love Michigan! |

That's it, Ann! I could NOT for the life of me remember Charlevois and Ludington. It's been so long since I was up that way, and they were right on the tip of my tongue (or fingers...). Thanks! I agree, Julie...Holland was my least favorite place in Michigan, but Frankenmuth still has Holland beat out for the worst.
Grand Haven has beaches? Sounds like a silly question, but I spent Thanksgiving there one year and it just seemed like a bigger town, to me. I don't recall seeing water, but....then, I was 16 and totally self absorbed :)

Lake MI is wonderful! We just had a beach day yesterday at Hoffmaster State Park. Jessie had some great suggestions - to add to that, Ludington, Pentwater and farther north to Suttons Bay, Harbor Springs and Charlevoix. In my opinion, Holland, Grand Haven, Muskegon and south are all very nice but busy, more crowded areas. Going north gives more of a relaxed, beach vacation feel. We are going to be in Arcadia in Aug. for a week. There are wonderful b&b's in almost every town.
Are you thinking of camping, getting a beach rental, hotels or variety? Do you want to stay in one place for the whole time (with day trips), or do you want to travel to a variety of places?

I'm from the east coast of Michigan, and my husband is from the west coast of Michigan, and we now live in the right in the "middle of the mitten!"
If you're thinking west coast (i.e. Lake Michigan), Holland is fun, and Grand Haven has good beaches.
Going around the top of the "mitten," Traverse City is fun but really tourist-y, Petosky has good beaches and rock-hunting (Petosky stones are the state stone of Michigan), and Mackinac City is fun but tourist-y, too. Mackinac Island is FABULOUS, but it's also outrageously expensive and busy this time of year. (If you're thinking of heading there, my suggestion is to visit the Island, but stay in St. Ignace-on the north side of the Mackinac Bridge. It's way cheaper than Mackinac City, and less crowded, too.)
The east coast doesn't really have a ton of nice places to go. I've been to Tawas, and they have a good beach.
If you're interested in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.), there isn't a lot of fancy tourist places, but the natural beauty is spectacular. Also, be prepared to really "rough-it." Restaraunts are few and far between, and hotels are really rustic! |

julie .. we have not .. but we are looking for a cottage somewhere up there. i did pick up some brochures when lucas and i visited the Henry Ford Museum last week (lordy only knows where they are!) i'll be interested to hear if anyone has too! xo

Long time ago...say about 20 years ago, we went to Mackinack island w/the Mackinack Bridge. It was pretty neat as a kiddo but I hav no clue what it is like now. I do have kinfolk up in Holland, Michigan.

I'm with Laura. Door County, WI is a great place to vacation and it right on Lake MI. The towns are enchanting and there is something for everyone. I loved attending a fish boil and eating fresh cherry pie...mmmmmm....

Door County, WI on the shores of Lake Michigan is just beautiful. It is filled with little towns full of little shops & restaurants, B&B's, cottages & campgrounds. There is lots to see & do and also just a great place to kick back & relax.

Well, I wasn't vacationing, but I was going to school near the coast...Manistee, Lelanau (sp?), Traverse City and any of those small towns below Traverse Bay are lovely. I surely love that part of Michigan. Have fun!
