the grandmother was the 'strength' of the movie ... the 'female' goddess in her must have given the child much strength. i loved how she met the two worlds by following her heritage traditions .. but also in that incredible tearful speech she gave for her grandfather at school .. THAT had me bawling!!! but she knew instinctually that it 'takes a village'.

blah.. he was too stubborn for his own good.. yeah.. i know... it was a movie.. so we had to hear thier story.. & he had his culture & beliefs that he was so imbedded in.. but if could have just tepped back.. even at BIRTH.. & accepted her more readily then.. both his & her Lives would have .. or could have been so much more enriched & gratifying!
& like the story told him.. things aren't aways what they seem.. or what you may have always thought they should be.. he needed to be a bit more loving & not so quik to think His was was the only way..

It was a Really Great Story though.. I love how she really did go with what was in her soul all along.. no matter the hardships it had put in front of her.. It was always there inside her to be what ultimatley she became at the end.. Not matter WHO she was.. or what everyone else really told her she should be doing.. Even old stubborn pants..

OH I WILL DEFINITELY FIND THOSE MOVIES! THANKS FOR THE MENTION OF THEM!

kathie .. i do believe he had his cultural beliefs deep in him .. it was obvious he loved his grand-daughter dearly .. but that he was on his own path to enlightenment. ha! and without his 'story' .. the movie wouldn't have had such a great plot ... the granddaughter also learned much and taught much. such a great film

Love that movie Frannie.. that little girl is amazing!! The regional portrayal is spot on & I too cry every time I see it.. I also watch The Piano every time I can. Have you ever seen Tess of the Durberville's (from the Thomas Hardy novel) With Nastassia Kinski. It is also an incredible film with such realistic regional influences. I don't know why, I guess it is the girl in me , but I am drawn to movies portraying young females in the storyline. Anyone seen "The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds" with Joann Woodward(ok I am showing my age), but the little girl in that just tug at my heart. Frannie, if you enjoyed Whale Rider, you would also like all of these other pics too!
