I've been putting this project off since I moved into my mobile home. Window coverings for the kitchen.

The larger windows have what are supposed to be "white" mini blinds. One of the smaller ones still has the curtains I had hanging throughout the kitchen. (I took them down last night. They were just covered in dust. BLUCK!) And the other one is bare.

I'm don't really like the blinds. They are ok for blocking out the heat from the sun. But I'm looking for something different. Any ideas?

Thanks for all the great ideas gals! I've been in my home 3 years now. When I started decorating my kitchen it was supposed to have a farm theme going. Well my mom collects chickens. Or I should say she was collecting chickens. The chickens came to roost in my kitchen a couple of months ago. You can't go anywhere in that room without seeing a chicken so I really like the clothespin and primitve curtain ideas. It's the kiddos weekend to spend with their dad so plenty of quiet time for me to tinker with odds and ends and see what unfolds.

Sam, I loved the idea of the curtains hung with clothespins...great idea. Shutters sound pretty cool too.

Cafe curtains (half curtains) with a valance above would be pretty and you could pull the bottom part back for the view. I think they would look pretty with your cute painting and those gorgeous windows. I use blinds here due to the sun beating in but I know what you mean about the dust and kind of sterile look they give. I made curtains and valances to cover them up in most rooms.

I too am curious about the laminating of the fabric on a roller shade. It seems it would wrinkle up from the rolling up and get kind of icky looking, but I have no experience with that. I made roman shades one year out of cute fabric at a former house and they were really great..blocked out the sun nicely, kept the house warm in the winter (closed at night) and opened up nice and high for seeing out when I wanted it that way.

Okay, so now I have a blog. http://woolyinwashington.wordpress.com/

Melanie...I just thought of something else...I have used the tension rods and then bought those "clip" type rings that you slide over the rod and I have used some of my vintage dresser scarves to use as curtains. I keep trying to think of ways I don't have to "buy" anything and you could use other things such as sticks or old broom handles cut down for rods or even heavy twine and then attach material with clothespins etc. It depends on your style....I happen to decorate sort of eclectic with a cabin/primitive style which would be fine for that but if you're fancier then maybe not so much. Just some thoughts!

Well...if you want instant gratification...you could buy some of those tension rods which are easy to install and have some "forgiveness" for measuring and then depending on how much privacy/light you want I have saved money by just buying the valance part of curtains or you can sew your own and it lets light in on top but gives you some privacy and "cuteness" on the bottom part of the window. That's a quick solution. I myself have been thinking of the shade option on my sun porch because during the day I like the windows open and to see out but at night I feel like I'm in a fish bowl out there and would like to be able to have shades I could pull down but they are hard to find enough...I have 11 windows out there and it might get pricey but they are still cheaper than some of the newer shades they have on the market...trust me...I've priced them. Has anyone actually laminated fabric on a roller shade? I would be interested in hearing about that and what they used and what their experience was. With 11 windows on my porch I don't want to invest the money and then mess it up! Typical me! LOL!
Let us know what you come up with...nice windows though!

I have those inexpensive bamboo rolldown shades. They can tuck right under your valance! How bout some vintage aprons for valances? That being said-I'm such an exibitionist- I never use shades!!!

What about a fabric covered roll down shade? I saw the idea once in a Better Homes and Gardens, I think. Basically, the gal bought the inexpensive roll up shades at the hardware, and then glued or sewed d the front side (facing in) with adorable fabric. She used a black and white gingham to go with her French country style kitchen. She had a bay window alcove, and it looked wonderful.

I found it adorable...wish I had more windows in my kitchen!
